Brian Marick

@marick@mstdn.social
mastodon 4.5.6

Software person (programming and testing). Involved in Agile from relatively early on. One of those grumpy old-timers who think it's lost its way.

I retired during Covid. As I’m “broke to harness,” I keep up what was part of my schtick: read widely and oddly, then explain outside-tech ideas to a mostly-techie audience. Instead of talks, my venues are a blog, a podcast (infrequent), and link-heavy Mastodon posts.

I like boosting other people’s posts. My leftish #uspol posts are so labeled.

“Epstein had pitched him on a potential art exhibit titled “Statutory” that would showcase underage models dressed to look older than they were. “You are incredible,” Ross told Epstein in response to the idea.” I hope I speak for all of us when I say: Ick. Gross. What the hell is wrong with you? Universities need a different funding model than hiring administrators whose main job is sucking up to rich assholes and worse. Government, too. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty-issues/2026/02/11/professors-epstein-files-begin-face-consequences

I must say that, after a month, I’m finding the USD10/month https://kagi.com/ subscription well worth it. (I used DuckDuckGo before.) I didn’t turn any LLM settings off that I remember. The “Quick Answer” feature is discrete, akin to the bookstore owner putting your copy of Kinky Sex Quarterly in a brown paper bag. (Kids, you had to be there.)

@marick@mstdn.social Honestly there's probably some confounding effects in there. Prison farm work programs tend to be used as a "reward" and select the most docile & cooperative inmates. Nobody wants

@sarahtaber@mastodon.online She only read the abstract, so I don’t know how well the study was done. (After she moved from clinical duty to administration, she did a fair number of “so how are our students doing post-graduation” studies, so I think (hope!) she’s familiar with a lot of the gotchas.) Re your point: it probably matters that Vandalia is a prison for misdemeanor offenses. I imaging they skew different than the ones condemned to Illinois’ now-shuttered supermax.

@sarahtaber@mastodon.online Wife (emeritus professor of food animal medicine) wonders if there have been studies about the effects of farm work on these target populations. She recalls there was a study showing prisoners who’d worked in prison dairies had a lower recidivism rate. (She used to go palpate cows at Vandalia State Penitentiary, which seemed to her to have as satisfied a workforce as any other dairy operation. But she tends to think the best of everyone. I mean: she married *me*.)
