Spring colours were the theme of the week but it seems the quiet beauty of the gradually emerging season isn’t sparking joy. However, I’m prepared to do what I need to in order to please you so here is Sacrilegious & Exclusionary on DK. Bold, bright, utterly unapologetic – a riot of neon rainbow with contrasting black that brings an instant pleasure hit to your needles or hook. Enjoy! #yarn #knitting #crochet #mothyandthesquid mothyandthesquid.com

Meadow at Dawn is a gentle wander through dew‑kissed grass and woodland flowers. Fresh green, heathered purple and soft speckles capture sunrise light on spring blooms, perfect for shawls, socks and sweaters that feel like a quiet, hopeful walk in the waking woods. Spring Posy is a sunlit bouquet spun into yarn: buttery roses, tiny daisies and glimpses of green leaves. Joyful yellows mingle with fresh leafy speckles, perfect for cheerful shawls, socks and cardigans that feel like armfuls of flowers gathered from a cottage garden on the first bright days of spring. One dyelot only - Sacrilegious & Exclusionary on aran. Several folk messaged me to ask for it so I caved! The reason I’m not keen to create more is that I seem to be developing a reaction to one of the dyes, which can occasionally happen to dyers. I’ve offered five other colourways this week but, as there has been little interest, I have done what seems necessary. If you love the yarn, please nab a skein while you can as it is so very bright and fun! Mothyandthesquid.com #yarn #knitting
This week has been a glory of teals and blues with hints of purple. I’ve chosen birds as inspiration to encourage folk to consider joining the Eurasian Birds Yarn Club. If you sign up now, you’ll get February (wren) and if you buy Robin (January) at the same time I’ll refund your postage. You get to save and collect the whole series, but it’s not taking advantage of me as I will send them both together. It’s win-win! #mothyandthesquid #yarn #knitting #crochet mothyandthesquid.com
Revealed: the new version of Robin that was the January yarn club colourway! There are a few extra skeins available in the shop as there’s always a lot of guesswork predicting subscriber numbers in January and I was optimistic. If you’d like to join at the same time as buying Robin, I will refund your postage as I’d be very grateful to achieve custom akin to previous years. You get exciting new bird themed yarn delivered monthly and I get food so yay! Mothyandthesquid.com #yarn #knitting
Blue Jay on a green garden bird feeder. Blue jays are bold, intelligent songbirds of North American woodlands, easily recognised by their crest and loud calls. Their plumage is bright blue with black and white patterning. They thrive in forests and gardens, caching acorns and fiercely defending their nests.

When you’re a bug, this is a fearsome predator! Frogs are basically jumpy nightmares in pretty costumes. One minute I’m minding my own insect business on a leaf, the next - whap! - I’m tongue décor. They sit there looking cute, like damp little kings of doom, pretending they’re not horrifying. Honestly, it’s all legs, slime, and betrayal out here. Hop along, terror. Courtship Display: shimmering with peacock glamour, this yarn has colour layered teal, dark jade and deep ocean blue, kissed with a feathery sheen courtesy of its cotton content. Its glorious shifts of colour echo a courtship display par excellence. Ideal for opulent shawls, luxe accessories and statement garments that feel rich, dramatic and elegant. #yarn #knitting #crochet #mothyandthesquid mothyandthesquid.com
“Coo Coo, Cool!” A Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus) in the snow, its rounded body warmed by grey-blue feathers. Its familiar cooing heard in both town and country. Mothyandthesquid.com
A reminder of all this NEW and beautiful yarn released this week. Complex colourways with sophisticated details that are flatteringly subtle and evocative of spring. Look forward, plan ahead, create a better future with small positive acts. Restore your calm through crafting so you can continue caring. 💕 🌷 mothyandthesquid.com
We interrupt this feed of exciting brand new colourways for an important news flash. Sacrilegious & Exclusionary has been resurrected. All the colours of the rainbow overlaid with black splashes! Kaleidoscopically spectacular! Want to know how it looks knitted/crocheted up? Check out the FB group and my historical posts or buy some and try it! 🌈🌚 mothyandthesquid.com
Complexity: speckled flower petals display astonishing detail, each fleck a microcosm of pigment interplay. Light scatters across mottled hues, revealing layers of genetic artistry and environmental influence. Every marking tells a silent story of pollinator attraction, camouflage, or mutation, transforming simple petals into living canvases of evolution and delicate, shifting colour harmonies. Cherry Blossom captures in yarn form that fleeting moment when the trees delight in soft spring light. Blush pinks melt into delicate creams with dark speckles like branches against a pale sky. Perfect for springtime accessories that feel gentle, romantic and quietly hopeful, as though you’re knitting or crocheting beneath blooming trees. Mothyandthesquid.com
Fresh Flowers captures armfuls of lavender tied in satin ribbons, dew-bright petals and soft twilight shadows. This romantic skein shimmers with cool lilac, heathered blues and gentle pink speckles, perfect for airy shawls, summer lace and accessories that feel like walking home through a sunlit garden. “Radical Left”, for all the women so labelled for having basic human compassion. Pretty speckles in an unrepentant shade of pink. Support small and craft in public. Share food and resources. Build community instead of sucking up to those with prestige who will never care back. Keep doing the good things you do. Stay safe out there. Mothyandthesquid.com
Peacock is a classic Mothy and the Squid colourway, available on a variety of yarn bases. If you love the bird theme, you’d do well to join our Eurasian Birds Yarn Subscription Club. You’ll receive a new avian colourway, species information, and a small themed gift every month throughout 2026 (or whichever months you choose to pay for, it’s totally flexible). Mothyandthesquid.com
January is for cosy classics and comforting colours, so today’s star is this much‑loved repeatable colourway. 🌿✨
There is a brand new collection quietly waiting in the wings, but I’m saving those fresh photos for when everyone feels ready to treat themselves.
For now, please enjoy this familiar favourite, give it a little bookmark for later, and relax knowing I have zero expectations.

2016 nostalgia is weird imo, but I looked through my photos for fun things to share. I love that there are so many pictures of my then small children, lots of cups of coffee, knitting and crochet, and best of all there is not one single picture of me because social media did not demand it. This image shows the best of the year: coffee in a mug from a small business, sock knitting, a stitch marker that was a kind gift, and in the background you can see evidence of my young family’s existence.
