Red-winged blackbirds are back and yelling at one another at the top of their lungs. That's what wakes up the nature spirits that nudge all the roots into sprouting. They start it all! #birds

A path near Salvaterra do Extremo in eastern #Portugal. It’s near the border with Spain and may once have been a smugglers’ trail. Now it is mossy and overgrown, the old walls crumbling. You can’t see it here but a castle ruin is visible in the distance from some points along it. And some of the trees are overgrown with pale lichen and hanging moss. Like walking through the past. #FootPathFriday

A pair of red-breasted nuthatches on the suet yesterday. The one on the left with the gray head is female, the other is male. I used to see these a lot when I lived in Ulster County New York briefly. Here I usually only see the white-breasted species so this was like old friends visiting #birds #BirdsOfMastodon #birbs #nuthatch #nature #BirdWatching
