Hey #FediHiveMind / #AskMastodon, help me out here. As you can probably see from the lack of activity on this account, I'm ramping down my social media presence pretty hard. However, I still find myself with downtime where I want to read something, but don't have/don't have time or mental space to make progress on a nonfiction book and don't want to read fiction.
What I actually want is a zine.
So I'm looking for recommendations. Where do you get your zines? Are there any regularly or irregularly published series you recommend? Who are your go to distros? All types welcome, from fanzines to tabletop rpg zines to software zines to photo zines to political zines. #Zines!

I'm not sure why but there's little that annoys me more than when someone is speaking about something outside their realm of expertise but whose name they know and makes up some wrong, muddled, or "funny" name by which to refer to it instead. Usually distinguishable from genuine confusion by the sarcastic inclusion of the phrase "or whatever" afterwards.
For instance:
- "toki ponga or whatever" (toki pona)
- "open/libre-whatever they're calling it" (LibreOffice)
- "PalmPotty" (referring to any handheld communication device)

It's funny - aside from my time building a cache, my entire career has been in "AI". Just, you know, classical AI: expert systems for things like cancer risk analysis.

Tape machines aren't hard to build, but good tape machines are. Today, there are very few manufacturers who actually build the tape part of the tape machine - the capstan-governed transport mechanism that moves the tape past the heads. This mechanism determines almost everything about how the tape player sounds.

Friendship ended with Digikam, now Darktable is my best friend.
(Digikam is great for managing a photo library, but the image editor is no good, and that makes it difficult to keep up with since I have to use an external editor. Darktable, on the other hand, is merely serviceable at managing photos but is an amazing image editor.)

I just deleted a long, link-filled blog draft about how the AI industry is driving negative climate outcomes, because, well, nobody will care. The people who agree with me will agree with me. The people who don't, won't. The people who gleefully adopted these models, who pretend like the world desperately needs more software faster, they don't care at all. That's what scares me. That's what makes me hopeless.
Who I used to think were good people have made it clear they care more about being on the "cutting edge" of software development. It's terrifying.
