@mwl@io.mwl.io Received wisdom is that the average American has a 6th grade or lower reading age (isn't that, like, a 12 year old? "Grade school" isn't a thing in my country). I don't write for them.

Hadn't heard that stat, that the average American reads at a 12 year old's level, 6th grade.
Ironic that. Back in 1919 my dad, the son of a plantation worker, was expected to drop out of school and work in the cane fields after finishing the 5th grade at age 11. He refused and was kicked out of his father's home to go it alone. He found room & board in exchange for work, went to 6th grade, and then on and on to grad school. He also worked additional jobs to pay his father the wages his younger siblings were expected to earn, to buy them the choice to continue in school rather than work in the plantation fields.
Interesting to see the general American populace has advanced just one reading grade level in 100 years.
