We also have dedicated weather stations and cameras for 🚲🚶 traffic only as well, and it's sometimes nice to look at the cameras, although they only snap one photo every five minutes. It's been snowing for some hours now again, and the 24/7 maintenance works great. This photo was snapped right now at 01:30 am, and that path has already been plowed twice today.

It’s often said that motorists “pay for” walking and cycling infrastructure. In reality, like everyone else, they contribute through general taxation — but history shows the story is more complex:

In the Netherlands, in 1920s, a bicycle tax was introduced because motor vehicle taxes didn’t raise enough money to build roads for cars — there weren’t enough drivers. Cycling was hugely popular, so road construction was largely financed by cyclists, who often weren’t even allowed to use those roads.

‪It is rather beautiful here in Oulu 🇫🇮, right now. Absolutely no filters needed at all 🤌 -20°C, wind chill -28°C. This is one of our main cycling and walking routes (#8) and here we have a 5 km stretch with ZERO at-grade crossings with motor traffic. I repeat, it's physically impossible to meet any motor traffic here. So it is very peaceful, safe and comfortable to ride and walk completely uninterrupted. Just bliss. #Oulu #MeanwhileInOulu
