Recently read a post (can’t remember from whom) about the ridiculous California age verified OS thing. It totally let-off the lady responsible for the bill, essentially saying “oh she means well” and excusing her total ignorance. I’ve seen the same sort of thing about Ofcom & the OSA here.
I’m sorry, no. If you are working on something like that and you don’t understand it, it is your duty to first educate and inform yourself on it. If you think of an idea and you aren’t sure if it can be implemented, find some domain experts, maybe at your local university CS dept (Christ, this is California…) and ASK. To not do so is a failure of statecraft, which is precisely what the lady in question has committed. She does not deserve a pass. Her ignorance should be highlighted.
Equally, if you are told to implement something that you know cannot work or cannot be effective, SAY SO. Refuse, if you must.
