I keep having to explain to people on Threads who keep saying that this winter proves climate change isn’t real, that that’s not how climate change works. It intensifies the extremes at both ends. Extreme warmth displaces extreme cold to a different region for a time, and vice versa. It’s not one giant heatwave and drought across the entire globe.

Frigid overnight temperatures tonight and tomorrow night, temps in the low teens, and highs only in the low to mid 20s Saturday and Sunday. Then the great thaw commences Monday and continues through Wednesday with highs in the low to mid 50s. It’ll also be quite windy tomorrow so expect wind chills in the single digits!

Gotta love it when what is shown on models to be a weak, fast moving snow squall over-performs and turns into a multi-hour mini-snowstorm. Thankfully didn’t look like much if any was sticking to roads.

Might see another quick around of light snow tomorrow evening, followed by frigid temps this weekend (highs just below freezing from #RVA north to #DC). But then followed by a nice thaw early to middle of next week (mid 40s Monday then low 50s Tuesday and Wednesday). Much of mid to late month looks mild for this time of year. #VAwx #MDwx #DCwx

Looking further ahead, the CFS (Climate Forecast System), which goes a month out and is used for long-range pattern recognition, is showing positive temperature anomalies from mid to late month and into early March, with several days of much above normal temperatures sprinkled in. Models have backed off a bit from the more aggressive snow totals for tomorrow, back down to a dusting to 1"; temperatures will still get above freezing today and the rest of this week into the weekend so that will help with melting.

The forecast for Tuesday night/Wednesday is evolving fairly quickly. Went from just a dusting of snow across northern Virginia, to now a dusting up that way PLUS 2-4” of snow further south during the day Wednesday, on a northeast to southwest axis that includes Port Royal, #RVA, Williamsburg, Charlotte Courthouse, and South Hill. Will see what tomorrow’s models show, but looks like a top dressing of snow is looking more likely for Tuesday night/Wednesday. #VAwx

Short range models are showing some quick-moving snow showers across northern #Virginia Tuesday night/very early Wednesday morning. But nothing more than a dusting to maybe a few isolated areas of an inch. Otherwise, not seeing any winter storms on the horizon for the time being. #VAwx #DCwx

Temperatures will improve somewhat after Monday morning with highs getting above freezing finally, and overnight lows in the upper teens/low 20s. The midweek storm system looks like a nothingburger at this point, and we actually should stay fairly quiet for the next two weeks.
