It's been a very silly year. 20 countries, 4 continents, many beers, 1 glorious husband: @Edent@mastodon.social

Things I am missing about Japan:
Plenty of time to cross the road on a green man
Built-in bidets on every public toilet
Things I am enjoying having left Japan:
Bins on the street so I don't have to carry rubbish around.
Paper towels in public toilets

A year ago today I walked away from a 15 year career in HE to take a turn prioritising my own wellbeing (instead of that of countless students and colleagues). Today I celebrated the end of 2 weeks in Japan with Kobe beef and sake in Osaka, and I am now on my way to the airport to fly to Sydney. A year ago I was exhausted, broken and yet still vaguely wondering if I'd done the right thing. Today, I am, quite simply, happy.

Drying - we make the environment too dehydrated for rot.
Freezing - we make the environment too cold for rot.
Fermentation - we embrace the rot.

Recreated Spargelzeit with some out-of-season (but still delicious) asparagus and a plant-based Schnitzel which was much nicer than the one we had at a disappointing vegan restaurant in Vienna. Added a honey/mustard/lemon dressing and

Not sure what the intersection is on fans of 2005's Pride & Prejudice and the latest Jurassic Park 20 years later (!) But I choose to see Rubert Friend murmuring "Miss Bennett" as an Easter Egg
