📢 New Essay:

"What if the exhaustion everybody feels isn't a moral failure but the completely rational response to being made responsible for an ecosystem of objects that never stop asking?"

I have so much respect for indie developers who have made a thing that had a big splash and then came back and did it again. The amount of work that takes is unbelievable. To not let all of the feedback (both good and bad) alter your ability to think clearly and put one foot in front the other and make a thing that's true to you again. There's such a strong pull mentally/emotionally to do more of what people liked, or less of what people didn't, on the next "thing" Thinking about this a lot.

I've been reading Daring Fireball for at least 15 years. This is by far the most surreal moment on this journey yet.

Thinking about introducing a version of Current called Current (dense edition) for all of the people who want to see 200+ posts in 4 inches of space. 6pt font. Comes with a digital loupe so you can scan 41 headlines without moving your eyes even a centimeter.

My favorite enhancements to make are removing things. Gotta get that salmon. Give me all of the salmon diffs.

Current is in good company here! It’s very interesting seeing so many people opt to use Current alongside NNW or Unread. This is absolutely an intended use case! Use it where it suits!

The most common question I get is about how I use Current myself.

I was a little wary of writing such a thing because I wanted to encourage experimentation, but I think we can do both.

Here's how I use it:

Android friends: @_jocmp@mastodon.social (fellow midwesterner and craftsman of capy reader) seems to share a similar philosophy.

I’ve used capy on Android and it is fantastic software.

Yes this talks a tiny bit about Current but I really found this very thoughtful and very interesting thinking about the future of software.

It aligns closely with my belief about the era of personal software (both personal as in made by someone for themselves but also personal as in strong opinions from the person making it for others)

For anyone wondering - I do not believe in keeping open standards behind walled gardens so Current will escape Apple as soon as I’m able to do it. 🫡

This post is a sincere thank you to my Mastodon family for the (super) warm reception of Current. We are firmly #1 in news and just about to break top 20 in the entire App Store. Thank you!!! #rss

I've been building an RSS reader for the past year. No unread counts, no inbox to clear. Just a river that flows at its own pace. Today it's live on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. I wrote about everything that went into it. https://www.terrygodier.com/current #rss

Yesterday I wondered aloud why RSS readers look like email clients.

@brentsimmons@indieweb.social replied. Turns out he borrowed that layout for NetNewsWire in 2002 — and twenty years later, he's asking why no one's tried something different.

That conversation became an essay. I built a visual version (with an ASCII fallback).
