#Greens #LarissaWaters: “we’ve watched an alarming escalation in the #MiddleEast following #DonaldTrump and #BenjaminNetanyahu's #strikes on #Iran, and the retaliations that have followed.
#Iranians deserve safety and freedom from fear - whether from their own government or other countries.
The desire for that freedom is real. So is the devastation that follows #illegalwars and #illegalbombing campaigns.
We don’t control what happens overseas, but we are responsible for what is done in our name.
#AnthonyAlbanese was the first world leader to support these strikes, and the government has refused to rule out the use of Australian military resources in this conflict.
I am proud that our Greens movement is prepared to stand for #peace in a moment like this.
But it tells us something about how narrow and concentrated political power has become in this country. In a healthy democracy, there must be room for challenge, for pause and for dissent - especially when the stakes are this high.
That means ensuring the Greens are strong enough to hold to our values when pressure builds, and strong enough to stop Australia being dragged into another #illegalUSwar like #Iraq or pulled further to the right in alignment with Trump-style politics.
With the new donation laws about to take effect, that narrowing is set to become even more deeply embedded in our system.

#Trump’s #Iranian campaign: an #illegal #war that risks becoming the new normal.
The #usisraeli military action will test the fragile rules governing the use of force.
The killing of #Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, by a US-Israeli strike is a targeted #assassination of a head of state. It also marks a grave escalation in a region already burdened with smouldering wars and fragile states.
The consequences of the deliberate strike will reverberate across a #MiddleEast marked by the aftershocks of foreign intervention. Revulsion against the hardline regime in Tehran, or the desire for a better future for the Iranian people, does not confer a legal justification.
Force is lawful, under the UN charter, only in self-defence against an imminent attack or with security council approval. Neither condition has been met. There was no evidence of an “instant, overwhelming” Iranian attack being prepared. What Trump’s #OperationEpicFury looks like is not pre-emption but prevention: a decision to eliminate a future risk while an enemy appeared weak. It is a war of choice. Mr Trump’s call to #overthrow a #sovereign government was extraordinary.
Unlike pre-emptive wars, preventive ones are deemed #unlawful because they grant the powerful licence to #strikeatwill. The distinction is important; it is why many European governments rejected #Russia’s justification of its invasion of #Ukraine by claiming to head off a future threat. Law cannot be optional for allies and binding only for adversaries. The domestic foundations of Trump’s action are also shaky. There’s little public support in the US for this #attack, and #Congress was not asked to #authorise #hostilities. There will be even less appetite as the #civiliandeath toll mounts and #USsoldiers come home in #bodybags.

#Greens’ Shoebridge on #Iran strikes: ‘#Labor knows it’s illegal’
Greens senator #DavidShoebridge has accused Labor, the #Coalition and #OneNation of being the “three war parties”, and criticised the government for “rushing” to back the strikes on Iran.
Speaking on his amendment to the Coalition’s motion, Shoebridge doesn’t hold back, saying the three parties have “never seen an attack by #DonaldTrump, an attack by #BenjaminNetanyahu, that they haven’t wanted to back in and support”.
“We have seen the #Albanese Labor government rush to be the first country in the world to back in Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu’s latest #illegalwar, literally rushing to back in a war that Labor knows is in #grossbreach of #internationallaw.
There’s a reason that the foreign minister has refused to discuss, even discuss, whether or not this war is illegal. It’s because Labor knows it’s illegal.”
Shoebridge accuses the government and opposition of being “reckless” about the consequences of the #bombing on the Iranian people.
“I can tell you that the mums who are pulling their kids out of the rubble, they don’t see freedom. They’re not talking about #regimechange. They’re grieving about the loss of their kids, their daughters.

#Flashflooding hits #Mildura after 100mm of rain in 24 hours.
Mildura residents have woken to flash #flooding and soaked paddocks after almost 150 millimetres of rain in 36 hours.
The #StateEmergencyService has received more than 230 calls for help #statewide since Friday, including 100 in the Mildura area.
#SES state duty officer Kate Turner said call-outs on Monday morning were predominantly related to flash flooding after 4am.
"Particularly in the last 12 hours or so, we've had a big uptick in the number of #flood requests for assistance that we've had, and for #buildingdamage as well from that rain that's come through," she said.
"It was a relatively settled night until people started getting up and moving around for work and noticing the kind of damage that's come through and the amount of water that's come through overnight as well."
The rainfall over the past 24 hours has broken the record for Mildura's wettest March day.
A total of 83mm had fallen since 9am on Sunday, breaking the record of 65.8mm, set the day prior.
The SES said #sandbags were being prepared for residents.
"In a pinch, the best thing you can do is [use] something like a pillow case and some garden soil," Ms Turner said.
"It sounds a bit silly but it really is a matter of what you can get on hand as quickly as you possibly can.
"Failing that, it's things like moving your valuables as high up as possible ... really making sure if you've got water coming towards your property, that you've got a plan and you know what you're going to do if it does get worse."
