If we're not in academia to create safe spaces, Black graduate students get pushed out. If they, by some miracle, finish their PhDs despite the hurdles, it's accompanied by trauma and health issues. Honestly I'm so fed up that I'm trying to figure out if DAIR can create a university of some sort, seriously. Because it's so depressing seeing the state of affairs.

I made the mistake of being interviewed for "The AI Doc," and have learned my lesson on better vetting for next time.They even feature some explicit eugenicists (e.g. cult leader who has nothing to show for except for his eugenicist self and writing a Harry Potter fan fiction).
They sprinkle some of us in like chocolate chips to perform ethics washing for the people they really wanted to platform. I don't recommend it.

Wildly different things, tasks, techniques, subspecialties being lumped into "AI" and then being conflated with each other, doesn't help. Different types of models vs the techniques to train them vs the tasks they are supposed to accomplish, all being bucketed under "AI", is misleading. This is why @emilymbender@dair-community.social and @alex@dair-community.social say to name the specific thing being discussed rather than calling it "AI". 🧵

This is how those talking about building artificial general intelligence (AGI) that "benefits all of humanity" which is the mission of OpenAI, and similar orgs like DeepMind, apparently plan on benefiting "all of humanity." We should ask which humanity exactly? And why are they so motivated to hide the myriads of exploited workers involved in building their system while telling us that its so 'intelligent' and automated?
