I can never understand why the tier list meme start ls at red (bad) for the best rank and goes to green (good) for the worst. I wondeted if red was being used to indicate “hotness”, but then the bad colour should be " cold" like blue. Is it just completely arbitrary?

Whoops. I commented, decided to rephrase and edited. But it didn’t result in an edit and I didn’t notice as that’s when I went to bed.

I think this person actually wants to run linux, but they are using Mac as a test case. They mentioned “install an alternative operating system” - which on hardware sold for Windows very much implies Linux. But if Linux is a no, and even macos is a no - which is from a “big and proper organisation” with support agreements and everything - then the company is obviously a lost cause who are dead-set on windows for life for all time.

They mentioned “install an alternative operating system” - which on hardware sold for Windows implies wanting to install Linux. It’s a sadly common thing in ‘enterprise’ however that Linux is looked down upon because businesses don’t trust anything you don’t pay for or doesn’t come with a big name attached and a costly support agreement to match. Which is why this person mentions Mac. Not because they are elitist but because willingness to support Mac is effectively a test case. The person is saying "They will only provide Windows hardware. they won’t let me install Linux on it, and if I ask for a Mac (which also comes from a big and ‘proper’ company by the way!) they won’t even allow that either.

Exactly. In around eight years of using a dashcam I’ve needed the footage maybe three times. Putting an SD card in my computer three times in eight years isn’t anything I could call a major inconvenience. I bought my dad the same camera. High quality recording, dead-simple, no frills and no hassle.

I chose intentionally obscure and wacky gadgets to overstate the point. I don’t genuinely think everyone has these.

I love how the typical contents of a kitchen around the world are a real reflection on that culture. Here in the UK you can always find an electric kettle, without question. In Italy a Moka pot. In Japan a rice cooker. It says a lot about what’s important to people. It’s only really in the US that you see such a proliferation of hyper-specific kitchen gadgets. Smoothie maker, waffle maker, electric egg poacher, vegetable spiralizer… I don’t know if that says anything about American culture, or just that you guys have really big kitchens.

I understand that one honestly, though using the word ‘believe’ seems inappropriate. More like “I don’t participate in Halloween” Halloween isn’t the example I’d personally choose (I think halloween is fun!) but a lot of holidays have become altogether too corporate, to the extent people might choose to opt out, or to celebrate in their own way, or at a different time. And I understand the sentiment.

I find it wild there are countless “convert videos online for free!” sites on the Internet full of bonus malware which are all just thin wrappers around ffmpeg. And yet they persist because people want googleable answers to their problem which don’t need a command line or downloading anything. Personally I’ve got a Python script which provides a slightly friendlier wrapper around ffmpeg for my common use-cases. But honestly ffmpeg is such a beast, so much of what we use daily depends on it under the hood.

I just got a new phone and I’m trying Kvaesitso to move away from Nova, but I just can’t get used to it. I think I just really like the paradigm of having a ‘desktop’ where I can freely arrange my most used apps in a specific layout, and Kvaesitso - by intentional design choice - doesn’t allow it. It’s a shame for me because I love the ethos, I love the open-source approach, and I love that it’s a wholly original launcher - rather than a fork of the stock or anything else. For some it’s the perfectl launcher I’m sure, but to me it’s like even after I unlock the device I’m still stuck in something that feels like a lock screen to me, and I feel weirdly trapped and claustrophobic. Not sure why it makes me feel that way, but it does!

Well I don’t think there’s any pride in it, they are just going after what is the most profitable at any given time. That’s exactly why I suspect they will choose to resurrect the Crucial name later, because given a choice between launching a new name nobody knows, or a name people recognise (even if it’s been tarred a bit) then recognised will be the winning and more profitable option.
