oh cool yet another “I’m exhausted by all the anti-AI anger” post got boosted onto my feed please don’t let anyone gatekeep your own anger away from you, especially when your ability to exist and to make a living are both under active attack. if you’re angry because of LLM-enabled war crimes, the loss of our software commons, or any of the other wrongs the AI industry has started that never stopped, you aren’t wrong. you don’t owe the people enabling and forgiving this stuff your kindness.

quite frankly the only argument anyone should be having with Cory Doctorow, a vaguely person-shaped stack of Wired Magazine back issues with a microphone duct taped to it, is “ew, why are some of these pages stuck together” I really don’t see the need to treat yet another motherfucker asspulling some shit he made up on the spot about a community I’m in with any respect at all, actually when said motherfucker has been a bad actor for so long that David Golumbia called him out, why bother?

here’s a worked example of why nobody believes firefox’s AI kill switch will be anything but a marketing wedge these showed up in my File menu, displacing the New Private Window item and fucking up my muscle memory, in spite of having browser.ml.enabled set to false. the setting for this is a new nonsensically named option, extensions.ml.enabled. a merry fuck you to the guys who showed up in my replies telling me to just disable the config flag I already disabled months ago.

if you have interacted with them and gotten an icky feeling, you’re not alone

later posts in this thread will be CWed. there is danger in interacting with the account in question. many of these posts feature someone named Jake; as you will see later, Jake and the Mozilla account are the same person in every way that matters.

has anyone else had the fucking creepy experience where just briefly visiting an online storefront in a web browser resulted in getting subscribed to that store’s email mailing list without consent? I’ve had this happen due to visiting a storefront on a fresh work computer with none of my personal information associated with it, and due to someone else visiting a storefront on their computer, both on my Internet connection. in both cases my personal email was registered for the mailing list.

bug ticket: gTextFucker is only capable of saving to a broken SQLite file, please consider implementing plain text file output resolution: WONTFIX and the core dev who closed the ticket goes on to do a conference talk about how wrong and rude it was to ask for this. the slides from the talk make it to the front page of Hacker News

mozilla: we just don’t know how to satisfy our users’ demands for “no AI”, after all what is AI? translation? spellchecking? TLS? if we start slopcoding features will they demand we disable those too? so many gray areas! firefox users: if it’s not core browsing functionally make it an add-on that isn’t installed by default. and then consider not writing the add-on if it turns out nobody wants it. mozilla: I know what I’ll do! I’ll write a poll where one of the options is 🤷, that’ll fix it!
