It looks likely that the province of Alberta will have a referendum on whether it should secede from Canada. The group organizing the petition to trigger the referendum claims to have met with senior Trump administration officials several times, and U.S. lawmakers have claimed that Albertans would rather be part of the United States than Canada. The referendum looks likely to fail. Only 24% of Albertans support joining the U.S. But, Coda Story's Natalia Antelava argues, that isn't the whole story. "The rhetorical architecture that made Crimea possible is now being constructed around Alberta," she writes.

Multiple reports say that a group of separatists from Alberta, Canada, has met with members of Donald Trump's administration, seeking money from the U.S. Treasury to help bankroll a new country. British Columbia Premier David Eby says this is treason. Here's more from @cbc@flipboard.com.
