"for #Canada to achieve its goal of net zero emissions by 2050, about 600,000 homes will need to be retrofitted each year. Updated building codes mean new buildings produce lower emissions, but older ones require retrofitting, especially since 80% of the buildings that will exist in 2050 have already been constructed." ‘My own contribution’: the Ottawa immigrants learning to retrofit homes and fight the climate crisis | Climate crisis | The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/apr/30/ottawa-immigrants-retrofit-homes-climate-crisis #retrofit

RE: https://flipboard.com/@cbcnews/british-columbia-i8sdok9nz/-/a-QSWoo3ZoTz6Vo59T7Sfq5g%3Aa%3A107108217-%2F0 "Should BC require every internet user's privacy to be invaded?" would be a more accurate headline here, CBC. And if they implement it, the next article will be "In an attempt to regulate social media and AI for youth, the BC Government broke the internet for many citizens, but not youth, who easily worked around the ban with VMs and VPNs." @OpenMediaOrg@mastodon.social this is a stinker here @cbcnews@flipboard.com #BCPoli #BC #CDNPoli #Canada #AgeVerification

The next headline, then: "Government continues to fail to regulate companies that profit by harming youth." due to @pinhman@humanwords.party #CDNPoli #Canada #BillC22 #privacy #SocialMedia

#health #canada People in Canada need stronger safeguards against toxic chemicals, with processes that do not skip critical consultation and environmental assessment steps. Preventing harmful exposures through robust regulation & sustained investment in chemicals management is essential to protecting health & far more effective than treating illness after the fact https://cape.ca/press_release/cape-response-to-spring-economic-update-2026/ #ClimateChange #UpheavalClimate #ClimateInstability #MassAtrocity #pollution #ecology #environment #climate

#canada Canada’s seasons don’t behave the way they used to. Winters swing between mild and brutal. Summers bring heat that lingers longer than expected. Forests, wetlands, and coastlines are reacting in ways that are harder to predict year after year. It shapes how plants grow, how animals survive, and how entire ecosystems function across Canada. When conditions shift without warning, species struggle to adapt. Some manage. Others don’t https://www.earth.com/news/canadas-weather-is-changing-dramatically-and-reshaping-ecosystems-across-the-nation/ #ClimateChange #climate

Goose and Gander I complained when M Carney used Google to talk to #Canadians. #Canada and its politicians must assert their #DigitalSovereignty, and that means making their content available in safe, surveillance-free venues FIRST, and only feed the #USA's #GAFAM / #AI / #SurveillanceEconomy SECOND. Walk the talk. And that includes you, @avilewis@mstdn.ca. Your #mastodon staffers know exactly what I am talking about: #Peertube, #Loops, #Pixelfed, and the rest of the #federated platforms. #Fediverse.

Looks like government censorship isn't going to be limited to social media. They are now going after crypto ATMs. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/canada-crypto-atm-ban-scammers-9.7180642 Could they go after the gift cards that also fuels crime? Nah. Could they compel carriers to block known overseas scam call centres? Nah. Let's just blame one technology and pretend that this solves everything! #Crypto #Facepalm #Canada #Money

Jesse Marsh has to have a serious look at #CyleLarin for the #CanMNT for the #WorldCup2026 His composure in the box and a deft touch showed why he has been one of #Canada's best strikers over the years. Unfortunately #Southampton drew with a late goal from #Ipswich in the #EFLChampionship #Saints are in the playoffs and could be the 3rd team promoted. #Wrexham, #Hull, #Middlesborough and #Millwall are also in the mix. All to play for in the final game of the regular season Cyle had a stunning debut against #Watford. On the field for 20 seconds, heads the winner. #Fedifc https://youtube.com/shorts/GV64lnsEYIk

#canada People rarely change their views in response to arguments alone. Instead, attitudes are shaped over time through relationships, experiences and social context. Conversations that build trust and mutual understanding are more likely to shift perspectives than those focused on delivering facts In real terms, this will mean finding core needs that Canadians have in common and seeking policies that can have climate benefits while meeting those core needs https://theconversation.com/climate-policy-isnt-partisan-research-suggests-more-on-the-right-support-it-than-oppose-it-280912 #climate

Interesting questions around sovereignty and corporate ownership. If Suse has some/majority US ownership, to what degree are it and it's customers protected by European law, from extraterritorial US law? The answer I've heard, when it comes to Microsoft and #Canada is... no protection at all. A $6bn question hangs over SUSE's sovereignty pitch • The Register https://www.theregister.com/2026/04/28/sovereignty_its_all_about_the/

RE: https://ieji.de/@GalacticGoddess/115652094528258948 Canadians! Another reminder that these bills are rapidly progressing through the chambers. Bill C-12 passed while Bills C-8, C-9, and S-209 passed their first chambers and are rapidly progressing through their second chambers. If these bills weren't bad enough, the Canadian government is trying to rush a bill that's essentially the United States' FISA and CLOUD Act rolled into one: C-22, the Lawful Access Act. C-22's guardrails protecting encryption are extremely flimsy and easily bypassed (i.e. the definition of a "systematic vulnerability" won't be legally defined until after the bill is passed). Please call your Senators and House of Commons Reps ASAP! If you live in Canada, sign the petition against C-22: https://www.internetsociety.org/our-work/internet-policy/keep-canada-protected/ #Privacy #FreeSpeech #Censorship #DigitalRights #Encryption #Internet #Canada
