Teaser: This #Plushtodon, a recent immigrant to Canada, is checking out our Mastodon feed. How did they get my password? They are excitedly looking for updates on how our community is convincing politicians to dump U.S. based social media and join the #Fediverse. It's almost like they have a vested interest in your activities and efforts. Hmm.... #MastodonCanada #MastoCanadaGOV #DigitalSovereignty #Technology

Four days at MWC Barcelona. The show has exceeded all our expectations. Two weeks ago we were in hackdays. This week we showed devices at world premiere with new software arriving from our Tampere team every single morning, flashed fresh each day. The full story is in this fortnight's community newsletter. Worth a read. 👇 https://forum.sailfishos.org/t/sailfish-community-news-5th-march-2026-mwc-barcelona-2026/28114 Thank you to everyone who has been part of this. Keep sailing. ⛵ #Jolla #SailfishOS #MWC2026 #DigitalSovereignty #CommunityPowered #PrivacyFirst

So, the Dutch government tried to whitewash Amazon's sovereign cloud offering, only to be called out so hard that they had to withdraw the paper. #digitalsovereignty https://nltimes.nl/2026/03/05/dutch-govt-pulls-report-dangers-american-cloud-service-criticism

Day 3 at MWC Barcelona, and this show has already exceeded all our expectations. Yesterday, Minister Lulu Ranne visited our booth. A meaningful moment for a Finnish team bringing a European alternative. The conversations here have been real. The timing feels right. Proudly from Finland, the country of the most loved mobile phones ever made. ❤️ #Jolla #SailfishOS #MWC2026 #DigitalSovereignty #European #PrivacyFirst

🎉 Big Tech alternatives are finally getting mainstream media attention! 🎉 Yesterday, The Guardian published a piece on how people and organizations can leave Big Tech behind and choose ethical, privacy-focused alternatives, a topic we’ve been passionate about at Tuta for a long time. 🙌🔐 Thank-you to Steve Rose for mentioning Tuta. It’s great to see privacy-first solutions getting recognition. 🙏 👉 Read the article: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/feb/26/how-to-replace-amazon-google-x-meta-apple-alternatives #TechAlternatives #DigitalSovereignty

Over the course of today, at a leisurely rate, I think we'll do a roundup of European efforts regarding #DigitalSovereignty and #DigitalIndependance. Europe and Canada have both struggled with this issue, but it's fair to say our allies across the Atlantic have been far more progressive and Digital Sovereignty has far more awareness with citizens and individual governments. #MastodonCanada ##MastoCanadaGOV

9,000 pre-orders. Time to celebrate. 🎉 This is not just a number. It is 9,000 people who chose privacy, independence, and a different kind of phone. People who decided that their data is theirs. People who believe something better is possible. Secure your Jolla Phone at the special batch price before February ends. If you have been considering it, this is the moment. Let's make it together. ❤️ https://jolla.com/phone #Jolla #SailfishOS #DigitalSovereignty #European #PrivacyFirst #Linux #CommunityPowered

AI sovereignty has been a hot topic at India's AI Impact Summit. Eileen Donahoe and Konstantinos Komaitis write for Tech Policy about what governments need to do to make that a reality, without their countries becoming isolated — it's all about interoperability. "In an interoperable world, standards are power—and governments that ignore them will find sovereignty decided elsewhere," they conclude. https://flip.it/XsEiLu #Technology #Tech #AI #DigitalSovereignty #Interoperability

RE: https://ohai.social/@noujoum/116079099458521416 "Chancellor of the Exchequer: 'Since the 1960s, we, the state and local government, have been using Microsoft products.' The fact that the US company was only founded in April 1975 seems to have escaped the Chancellor's attention." --- This says a lot about what kind of people are the decision makers for these contracts worth hundreds of millions. And on what grounds those decisions are made. #DigitalSovereignty #lobbyism $$$

Seems like europe and @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu are really getting enthused about #digitalsovereignty & #digitalIndependence finally. Perhaps they should think less about attempting to duplicate the american social media biased version of the web. Instead encourage development/fund a european search engine that leverages some of the best features of how the web used to be in the 90s and 00s before parasite platforms hijacked and ransomed the relationship between people who needs things and people who supply things. Having a widely used european search could push many of the parasite (US) relisting companies and platforms and social media to the back of results and instead connect people who want stuff, whether information products or services, directly connect them without middlemen to local (european) people who supply stuff, whether information, products or services. Connecting people who supply stuff, without US ransoms in money and time, to people who need stuff seems a win.

The German federal government currently pays €481 million in licensing fees to #Microsoft every year. I'm sure @zendis@social.bund.de could build some nice stuff with half the money and make it available for everybody else to re-use. #DigitalSovereignty #DigitalCommons #FOSS

Some important reporting this week from @thetyee@mstdn.ca regarding the challenge for our government to achieve #DigitalSovereignty. The will appears to exist but there's very little doing. Europe is ahead of Canada at this point with multiple municipalities implementing Linux, LibreOffice and local cloud providers. It's time our government started taking concrete action. It's like eating an elephant. Take it one small bite at a time. #MastoCanadaGOV #MastodonCanada https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2026/01/29/Big-Tech-Spearheads-US-Threat-Canada/

Many institutions are committed to #sustainability. For this reason alone, #digitalsovereignty should be important to them. Two years ago, scientists from @JLBe@mastodon.social and its network published a study on the sustainable use of #smartphones. 👉 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/sd.2995 It showed that typical #socialmedia apps such as #Instagram, #TikTok, #YouTube, etc. on #cellphones conflict with a number of sustainability goals. Among other things, they cause high #energy consumption, which is not incurred directly on the smartphone, but in #datacenters and transmission networks. A large proportion of the #electricity consumption is due to the fact that these apps do not respect #privacy and data protection, but instead spy on users. The use of #Mastodon and other #Fediverse services is more sustainable because much less data is exchanged between users' smartphones and the service instances.
