yesterday i upgraded one real & one virtual :fedora:#kinoite from 43 to 44. they included various layered pkgs, so i suspected i might be in for a rocky process. it went seamlessly, uneventfully, boringly. that's just lovely. sunday i shall do my other real kinoite's upgrade. gosh we're so lucky to have so much #FOSS goodness ❤️🐧

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz @mayadev@tilde.zone @Blender@mastodon.social how can you be sure of that. Yes, we don't live in the reality where blender is fully funded by donations but dismissing the notion by saying it wont exist without bigtech is dumb. First, its an opensource project, it will live on with contributors and forks Second, There are foss projects that were literally saved by donations, Thunderbird got a second life with that little donate pop-up notification. Blender could do the same. #blender #foss #bigtech #opensource

W3C is very pleased to announce that the @sovtechfund@mastodon.social has launched a pilot program to support independent #OpenSource maintainers participation in the work of our groups, including training, mentoring, and financial support to make sustained engagement possible. It is really wonderful to see efforts from donors to recognize the role that open standards play. The call for applications is open until 19 May. More information available at https://www.sovereign.tech/programs/standards Apply now! #FOSS

Meet the #LibreOffice community at events around the world! And grab cool merch 😉 Last month, for instance, we were at InstallFest in Prague: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2026/04/29/insights-from-the-installfest-2026-conference-in-prague/ #foss #openSource #freesoftware

RE: https://mastodon.social/@Blender/116482997785333001 Reputation is one of the most valuable things any social project has. It can inspire people to do great things together. Money is, *waves hand*, helpful; but just a thing. It's not valuable in itself, only in what things it can be transacted to get people to do for you. If you trade inspiration for transactional power, then you no longer need to lead people, just money. And money just isn't as valuable as people. #Blender #PayForFreeSoftware #FOSS #OSS #FreeSoftware #funding

#LibreOffice is available in over 120 languages – but for some, our community needs help, such as with Swahili: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2026/04/27/help-us-to-improve-libreoffices-swahili-translation/ #foss #openSource #freesoftware

Join us at the #OpenEducationDay organized by @CHopen@infosec.exchange in Bern to contribute to the discussion. ⚠️ Github CLI now has telemetry spyware built in:

https://cli.github.com/telemetry

They’re shifting the burden onto users by requiring YOU to opt out, instead of making it opt in.

Run gh config set telemetry disabled to disable it.

Your software vendor is embedding AI into your OS whether you want it or not. You do not need new hardware to escape it. Linux runs beautifully on existing machines. LibreOffice replaces Microsoft 365. Nextcloud replaces SharePoint. The open source stack is mature, capable, and puts control back in your hands. Digital sovereignty is a business decision, not just a technical one. #DigitalSovereignty #OpenSource #Linux #LibreOffice #FOSS #SustainableTech

How good is #LibreOffice in screenwriting? According to one user on Ask LibreOffice, very good – especially since Markdown support was added: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2026/04/21/using-libreoffice-for-writing-screenplays/ #foss #openSource #freesoftware

The EU Commission just created something that didn't exist before: a way to actually measure digital sovereignty. Their new SEAL framework rates cloud providers 0–4. No US hyperscaler won a lead contract. €180M goes to OVHCloud, STACKIT, Scaleway, Proximus. The quiet part: SEAL-2 minimum means your provider can't be compelled by foreign law to hand over your data. Most winners hit SEAL-3 — immune to non-EU supply chain disruption. This is procurement policy, not rhetoric. It will cascade. https://commission.europa.eu/news-and-media/news/commission-advances-cloud-sovereignty-through-strategic-procurement-2026-04-17_en #DataSovereignty #SovereignCloud #EU #Privacy #FOSS

hi, i’m Nicoleta - never used a microblogging platform so this is all new to me :)

i love:

  • computers - but the hacker culture / free software / sustainable tech parts, not the hypergrowth dark pattern stuff that plagues our existence nowadays
  • writing, which i should do more of, over at nicoleta.bearblog.dev
  • art & creative expression
  • music, esp. electronic
  • rhythm games
  • dancing, i dance lindy hop!

i’m looking for a community of like-minded people, who feel the same about tech, which is why i joined here :)

if you’re local (from Bucharest/Romania), let’s get connected, and form a local group for FOSS enthusiasts/hackers/tinkerers!

see you in the cyberspace :)

@asdasd201@lemmygrad.ml The sad reality is that you will likely have no choice but to use AutoCAD since that's what your instructor wants you to use. Even if you are able to use something free/open, there is always a chance that something in the file will render incorrectly when loaded into AutoCAD. The best thing (I think) you could do is do the assignment in both #AutoCAD, and #CAD software of your choosing be that #FreeCAD, #QCAD, #blender, #LibreCAD, or something else with which I'm unfamiliar. After class, speak with your instructor and teach them that these things can be done using #FOSS solutions as well, could be they don't even know. Worst that happens is you'll have taught yourself how to do the same thing in different software. Everything that was taught (that I can recall) in the #drafting classes I took 30 years ago can be done in any of the softwares I mentioned, but I'm sure things are a bit different these days. It's quite irresponsible of educational institutions to push students into specific software, versus teaching concepts which can be translated across multiple. Teaching students only about expensive licenced software (regardless of providing free student licences) over the concepts used to accomplish the task, promotes ignorance over education, and encourages software pirating.
