Mosaic Select 17 by Johnny Richards, released on Mosaic in 2005 but recorded between 1955 and 1966. Review by Scott Yanow Johnny Richards, who is most famous for his association with Stan Kenton, was an inventive writer who starting in 1957 and had a band of his own. The music on this three-fer includes the adventurous three-part third stream piece "Annotations of the Muses," a set of Richards' adaptations of themes from My Fair Lady, a few Afro-Cuban projects, some relatively straight-ahead but complex jazz, and Richards' hit "Young at Heart." Flore Benguigui & The Sensible Notes - i-330

Every now and then an Album comes out that shapes what i listen to for months on end. And this is one of those.

When i first spotted it I though “oh this looks fun” only after reading a bit into it I realized, who Flore Benguigui was I read up on her story and am so happy that she put out an Album like this now!

Okay, But what makes this so special you ask? It’s just a few more or less known Jazz Standards? - Well yes, but the way they are interpreted and played feels so accessible, so fun and inviting.

When I say it changed how I listen to music I mean that my focus shifted a bit, it kinda inspired me to, firstly pick up my guitar and noodle along for hours, but also to listen to more Jazz again and I really appreciate that.

It’s still thirty hours until #BandcampFriday but my new album seems to have dropped about a day early!

Dgar has tried to craft an “Album Experience” for you, so let me give you a quick rundown of the track list.

Pronounced Jar

Side One. The Beginning.

  1. Stupid : Youthful punk angst against societal pressures. All other songs exist within this track.
  2. Airlock : That someone who takes your breath away…
  3. Daedalus : Wise parental advice.
  4. It’s Always Monday On The Moon : Working a dream job is still working a job, and working away from home is hard.
  5. Little Black Hatchback : Adventures with the ones you love. Cherished memories.
  6. Anymore : The angry end of a bad relationship.
  7. Splinter In The Mind’s Eye : The province of the mind can be difficult to navigate.

Side Two. New Beginnings.

  1. Digital Busker : A musician pours their soul into their music, and tries to find their audience in a sea of online noise.
  2. Waving Man : Resist corporate art theft.
  3. Only The Music : Music as a refuge when the void is trying to swallow you.
  4. All Zombies Go To Heaven : Conservatives are weird.
  5. Icarus : A flight of hubris ends in disaster.
  6. Virtual Scrolls : Ghosts appear in the ether.
  7. Stupid (reprise) : Maintain the absurdity. The poem rhymes. The song is complete.

I was unsatisfed with all the music players for Android, as none of them had the flexability of the mpc, mpd, and ncmpcpp workflow.

So I started using that on Termux, then I was bored, and found out about the termux-notification command. Setting that script was pretty stright forward. Do keep in mind that this does require the termux-api app.

There are two notifications types “default” and “media”. Default gives you 3 button which you could customize the text and function of. Media givesbyou those 4 media buttons, and i think it interacts with Android’s media shenanigans.

Anyway, I needed more than 4 buttons, so I thought of the following features: if you press pasue/play while the mpd is already paused/playing you’ll get another notification with an alt menu. Sadly I couldn’t implement it correctly, as switching between the notifications kept spawning instances of “mpc current –wait” that I didn’t know how to get rid of. So that remains a project for later.

Other cool shit you can do with termux-api:

  • Turn the phone’s torch on and off.
  • Get data from phone sensors (i think there’s a sensor for when headphones are plugged in/off which would be useful for me).

Todo:

  • Implement the alt menu, to give me options such as adding artists, albums, playists and stuff. I thunk i’ll just go with shell command execution. If you use the “$REPLY” variable in your notification actions, you can enter arbitraty text and process it in termux.
  • Upload this thing to codeberg lol.

When I was a 13yrs old, a lifetime ago, I had the biggest crush on this singer. He was cute, had amazing hair & a beautiful voice. His name was all over my high school folders & I just thought he was the ants pants.
