#MondayRandom10 At first I thought maybe I had managed to hit ten songs in my collection where I knew _none_ of them well, but then I spotted the XTC one. ...Yeah, that's probably it. _Maybe_ the Three Dog Night if I heard it. The rest, not even. It's just a statistical anomaly. The next _four_ (because of course I just get Winamp to scramble the whole list) I all know. Someday I'll try to figure out the fraction of my collection I know well, but I don't think it's more than 50% by this point.

#AlternateFridayMusic for March 13 2026 the word is "Water"

Artist: Brian Eno
Album: Before And After Science (1977)
Song: Backwater

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YitVQuOBuLc

My brother got me into Brian Eno when I was in university. While I do like the occasional ambient stuff from time to time, though, I am a much bigger fan of the albums where he actually sings. "Taking Tiger Mountain" is my favourite, but I also love this track from "Before And After Science". I'm not entirely sure what it's talking about, but it's fine to sing stuff like "If you study the logistics and heuristics of the mystics". But it's much more realistic to abandon such ballistics.

#MondayRandom10 _Two_ Stereolab songs? They only make up 0.26% of my catalogue! Of course, They Might Be Giants is the only artist that makes up more than 1% of catalogue so whatever. Anyway, I am bad at picking out Stereolab tracks but "Metronomic Underground" is one I might have a chance at. Otherwise strongly familiar with the Wall of Voodoo (in the Andy Prieboy era, post-Stan Ridgway), Love & Rockets, and Crystal Waters.

Especially we _just_ did "purple" so I feel constrained from going back to "Purple Rain" for another track or something. On a whim, I am instead grabbing this one, a song I remember listening to a few times as a kid on one of my mother's old 45s. I hadn't heard it in years but ran across it a few months ago and got a new copy. I had never known that it's actually a novelty song built around a long sequence of frustrated rhymes. #music #DinahShore

@fc@universeodon.com Wayanay are like South American trad folk, I believe? I taped them off my mom years ago and was amazed to find a digital copy of them at any point. I have fond childhood memories of "Knock Three Times" and "Tie A Yellow Ribbon", and at some point went through a bunch of "Super Hits of the 70s" CDs and picked out the tracks I liked. I have more trouble with the 50s, frankly, having shunned it for years before eventually admitting that maybe some of it is okay. So I try to keep an open mind. And one day I may even give New Kids On The Block another chance. Though don't hold your breath.

Pentagenarian who likes to read, listen to music, sing, play games, and watch TV, but doesn't have as much time as he'd like because he has to work as a software developer to support his wife and three kids.

@fc@universeodon.com Man, I think the only one I know from this list is "Delicious Demon". Though I have many songs by The Cure, and have heard of the Jackson 5, Richard Hell, and Leona Naess.

Most familiar with the Pat Benatar and Klaatu songs, I guess the Mick Jagger too though it's from the Live Aid performance. The Mise en Scene is definitely the newest, only got it like last year. 50% female, which seems pretty good.

@catsalad@infosec.exchange Wow, somebody should make a Buffy rewatch podcast and call it "Buffering The Vampire Slayer". Oh, wait, somebody already did.

@fc@universeodon.com @Bishopjoey@writing.exchange @dgar@aus.social @electric_gumball@mastodon.social @stormygleason@hachyderm.io #FortnightFridayMusic for February 20 2026 the word is "Underground" Artist: Army of Lovers Album: Massive Luxury Overdose (1991) Song: The Particle Song The particle Z The particle Y Travel fast in a concrete tube Underground Ride mile after mile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uCbVVTouRs Army of Lovers I first heard about because one of their videos was featured on the worst-of-the-year "Fromage" show on MuchMusic. But when I saw the album at the library I was compelled to check it out. And apparently I don't mind cheesy gay Eurodisco, even when they mangle particle physics for comedic effect. #music #ArmyOfLovers

@fc@universeodon.com Vince Hill was on "Time To Remember: 1971" from my birth year. Not to be confused with Vince Gill. Songs To Wear Pants To is mostly silly or commissioned songs by Andrew Huang. Stephen Duffy was the guy who almost was in Duran Duran but left them before they became famous, recorded as "Tin Tin" and then "The Lilac Time". The Irish Rovers have been around forever. Irish expatriates singing mostly traditional songs, best known for "The Unicorn". Feeding Like Butterflies was an Edmonton band, so definitely the most obscure. Howard Shore did the eXistenZ soundtrack. And "Trouble With Boys" was the song Ross and Monica danced to in that episode with Dick Clark New Year's Rockin' Eve. I'd say you win narrowly this week by knowing 2 of 3.
