Mosaic Select 17 by Johnny Richards, released on Mosaic in 2005 but recorded between 1955 and 1966. Review by Scott Yanow Johnny Richards, who is most famous for his association with Stan Kenton, was an inventive writer who starting in 1957 and had a band of his own. The music on this three-fer includes the adventurous three-part third stream piece "Annotations of the Muses," a set of Richards' adaptations of themes from My Fair Lady, a few Afro-Cuban projects, some relatively straight-ahead but complex jazz, and Richards' hit "Young at Heart." There are many short solos from the top-notch sidemen, but it's Johnny Richards' writing that makes this set quite definitive and memorable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQ9iZ3MKWII&list=RDwQ9iZ3MKWII&start_radio=1 #JohnnyRichards #StanKenton #Jazz #BigBand #AfroCubanJazz #Music #MosiacSelect #ThirdStream

Flore Benguigui & The Sensible Notes - i-330

Every now and then an Album comes out that shapes what i listen to for months on end. And this is one of those.

When i first spotted it I though “oh this looks fun” only after reading a bit into it I realized, who Flore Benguigui was I read up on her story and am so happy that she put out an Album like this now!

Okay, But what makes this so special you ask? It’s just a few more or less known Jazz Standards? - Well yes, but the way they are interpreted and played feels so accessible, so fun and inviting.

When I say it changed how I listen to music I mean that my focus shifted a bit, it kinda inspired me to, firstly pick up my guitar and noodle along for hours, but also to listen to more Jazz again and I really appreciate that.

Faves:

  • Everything happens to me

Equinox is the second album by Sérgio Mendes and Brasil '66, released in April 1967, with vocalists Lani Hall and Janis Hansen. Review by Richard S. Ginell Equinox continues the scrumptiously winning sound that Sergio Mendes cooked up in the mid-'60s, this time a bit more fleshed out with John Pisano's guitar, a slightly thicker texture, and even an imitation sitar (this was, after all, 1967). Again, the mix of American pop tunes old and new and Brazilian standards and sleepers is impeccable (although it didn't yield any substantial hits), and the treatments are smooth, swinging, and very much to the point... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IRVI7N710k&list=OLAK5uy_l1_NeDsAESWrGYCEBxarVVCpsam6DZeIU #SergioMendes #MPB #BossaNova #Jazz #SpaceAgePop #60sPop #Music

A Generation Ago Today is an album by guitarist Kenny Burrell featuring standards associated with the Benny Goodman Sextet and Charlie Christian recorded in 1966 and 1967 and released on the Verve label. Allmusic awarded the album 4 stars with its review by Scott Yanow stating "the now-obscure set has been out-of-print for quite awhile [sic] but the music is excellent" - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ43_i4Q2yw&list=OLAK5uy_l1AM18D5GSQldA8wMADDZI98DXR6R1bVI #KennyBurrell #PhilWoods #MikeMainieri #RonCarter #BennyGoodman #CharlieChristian #Jazz #VerveRecords #Music

Captain Tarthopom by Jean Cohen-Solal, released on Connection in 1973. Phillipe wrote on Prog Archives: First formed in electro acoustic researches and in contemporary improvised music, Jean Cohen Solal delivered two intriguing, very personal albums during the 70's. Today, Flute libres and Captain Tarthopom can be considered as ultimate masterpieces without reaching a specific musical label. These albums are a perfect mix between buzzing sitar-like mantra, weird electronic dream-like psychedelica and jazzy acid rock. Captain Tarthopom starts the cosmic, magical dance with two haunting folkish-epic compositions that include a certain sense of humour and derision (self title)... https://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=18134 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bezftt6Am4Q #JeanCohenSolal #Flute #Prog #CosmicMusic #Jazz #FrenchMusic #Music

Bad and Beautiful is an album by the American jazz musician Sun Ra and his Arkestra. Recorded in 1961 in New York City at the Choreographers' Workshop, 414 W. 51st St., the album was the second to be recorded in New York by the Arkestra after leaving Chicago, but would remain unreleased until 1972. The album is considered to represent an important transition between the big band approach of the Chicago recordings, and the more 'outside' approach of Ra's smaller bands recorded later in the decade: - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xI7x1K5A8cU&list=OLAK5uy_mLCD9Qg-GV3Q_4KSSuyWc58yaAxM_D7VQ&index=1 #SunRa #SpaceJazz #BigBand #FreeJazz #Music #Jazz #Arkestra

Your Prayer is the second album by saxophonist Frank Wright. It was recorded in May 1967 in New York City and was released by ESP-Disk later that year. On the album, Wright is joined by saxophonist Arthur Jones, trumpeter Jacques Coursil, bassist Steve Tintweiss, and drummer Muhammad Ali Writing for Stereogum, Michael Nelson commented: "The other horns treat the melodies like fanfares, announcing Wright before he steps up for a fierce solo, but on pieces like 'No End' and particularly the nearly 13-minute 'Fire of Spirits,' everyone gets to have their say. Tintweiss's extended bass solo is actually a highlight of the disc, though the real secret weapon is Coursil's trumpet. Ali's drumming is frantic and ferocious throughout, wiping out the landscape like a forest fire." - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBCuFyIxJII #FrankWright #Jazz #FreeJazz #ESPDisk #Music #AthurJones #JacquesCoursil

Mama Too Tight is an album by Archie Shepp released on Impulse! Records in 1967. The album contains tracks recorded by Shepp, trumpeter Tommy Turrentine, trombonists Grachan Moncur III and Roswell Rudd, tuba player Howard Johnson, clarinetist Perry Robinson, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Beaver Harris in August 1966. The AllMusic review by Thom Jurek states: "Shepp had hit his stride here compositionally... lots of free blowing, angry bursts of energy, and shouts of pure revelry are balanced with Ellingtonian elegance and restraint that was considerable enough to let the lyric line float through and encourage more improvisation. This is Shepp at his level best." - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jkg_fO9fhpk&list=RDJkg_fO9fhpk&start_radio=1 #ArchieShepp #TommyTurrentine, #GrachanMoncurIII #RoswellRudd #HowardJohnson #PerryRobinson #CharlieHaden #BeaverHarris #Jazz #FreeJazz #ImpulseRecords #Music

Ended Tuesday and welcomed Wednesday after a swim with Blue & Sentimental an album by American jazz saxophonist Ike Quebec recorded for Blue Note on December 16 & 23, 1961 and released the following year. The album features a quartet made up of Quebec (occasionally doubling on piano), guitarist Grant Green, and rhythm section Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The album features rare rhythm guitar accompaniment by Green, who was more typically a soloist. The AllMusic review by Steve Huey calls Blue & Sentimental "a superbly sensuous blend of lusty blues swagger and achingly romantic ballads" and "a quiet, sorely underrated masterpiece".[4] In 2004, critic Richard Cook wrote that the album "might be Quebec's masterpiece" - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wwf9NnOQ03k&list=OLAK5uy_l4I1mw03e57sIv-9VXdv7e1HonWFQtdCU #IkeQuebec #GrantGreen #PaulChambers #PhillyJoeJones #Jazz #BlueNote #Music

Free Action by Wolfgang Dauner , released on SABA in 1967. Review by Ken Dryden ...This adventurous session of originals by the pianist includes violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Gerd Dudek, cellist Eberhard Weber, bassist Jürgen Karg, and two drummers, Mani Neumeier and Fred Braceful. Although Dauner is the leader, he treats himself as part of the ensemble and doesn't overly dominate the performances. The music alternates between accessible melodies reminiscent of Charles Mingus in spots, though there is often a quick transformation into much looser frameworks where chord structure and rhythm is quickly abandoned... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om7hOtsDOF0&list=RDOm7hOtsDOF0&start_radio=1 #WolfgangDauner #JeanLucPonty #ManiNeumeier #EberhardWeber #SABA #MusikProduktionSchwarzwald #GerdDudek #Jazz #FreeJazz #Music
