West Side Story is a 1962 studio album by Oscar Peterson and his trio. The album features jazz interpretations of seven songs from the film West Side Story. Review by Ken Dryden ..rather than woodshed on the selections prior to entering the studio, the Oscar Peterson Trio spontaneously created impressions of the musical's themes on the spot. "Something's Coming" seems like a series of vignettes, constantly shifting its mood, as if moving from one scene to the next. Ray Brown plays arco bass behind Peterson in the lovely "Somewhere," while the feeling to "Jet Song" is very hip in the trio's hands. The snappy interplay between the musicians in the brisk setting of "Tonight" turns it into a swinger. "Maria" initially has a light, dreamy quality, though it evolves into a solid groove... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGb2wuT1p9o&list=RDLGb2wuT1p9o&start_radio=1 #OscarPeterson #JazzPianoTrio #WestSideStory #Jazz #Music #EdThigpen #RayBrown #VerveRecords

Malma Maliny by Jan Hammer Trio, released in 1969 on MPS. Recorded ‘live’ at Munich’s legendary Domicile jazz club a few years before Czech composer/keyboardist Jan Hammer leaped to fame with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, this album highlights Hammer’s compositional and organ/piano skills. Czech bassist George Mraz, has worked with everyone from Oscar Peterson to Joe Lovano, and the versatile Dutch drummer Cees See completes the trio. The album begins with the funky 24 bar blues Make Love featuring Jan’s standout piano and a soulful bowed bass. Hammer switches to organ on Waltz For Ivana as Mraz dances through the piece... https://www.mps-music.com/releases/malma-maliny/?portfolioID=21 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMZKBoLCgRQ&list=RDsMZKBoLCgRQ&start_radio=1 #JanHammer #GeorgeMraz #JazzPianoTrio #Jazz #Music #MPS #MusikProduktionSchwarzwald

The Sound of Spring is an album of compositions related to springtime by the Ramsey Lewis Trio, recorded in 1962 and released on the Argo label. The Ramsey Lewis Trio gets some additional orchestral backings – and with great results! The set features Ramsey, Eldee Young, and Red Holt – all playing their usual pyrotechnic blend of soul jazz and swing – supported by larger arrangements handled by Riley Hampton, done in a style that never gets in the way – but which creates some really cook banks for Ramsey and crew to soar off of! Titles include "Spring Fever", "Sound Of Spring", "Truly Truly Spring", "Soft Winds", and "Blue Spring". - Dusty Groove https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzB2htBP55k&list=OLAK5uy_mg09z9OXuvydCn8B_R9hnFd6WPc1APFRg #RamseyLewis #JazzPianoTrio #Jazz #Music #Spring #RedHolt #EldeeYoung

Moonscape by Michael Garrick Trio, released on Airborne Records in 1964. One of the earliest albums as a leader from British pianist Michael Garrick – a set that pre-dates his amazing Argo albums of the 60s, and which was originally issued on 10" vinyl, in a limited pressing of 99 copies! The sound here is no less radical than Garrick's better-known albums of the decade – a mixture of angular edges and more open, free-flowing lines that soar out beautifully with a great sense of joy and life! Although a trio album, the record has all of the same imagination as Garrick's sextet dates – a sense of space and creative energy that's simply breathtaking – supported by some excellent original compositions by Garrick, and played by a trio that includes Dave Green on bass and Colin Barnes on drums. - Dusty Grooves https://www.trunkrecords.com/releases/moonscape_07/moonscape.php https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6KmWvfxAVQ #MichaelGarrick #Jazz #BritJazz #Music #JazzPianoTrio
