Malma Maliny by Jan Hammer Trio, released in 1969 on MPS. Recorded ‘live’ at Munich’s legendary Domicile jazz club a few years before Czech composer/keyboardist Jan Hammer leaped to fame with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, this album highlights Hammer’s compositional and organ/piano skills. Czech bassist George Mraz, has worked with everyone from Oscar Peterson to Joe Lovano, and the versatile Dutch drummer Cees See completes the trio. The album begins with the funky 24 bar blues Make Love featuring Jan’s standout piano and a soulful bowed bass. Hammer switches to organ on Waltz For Ivana as Mraz dances through the piece... https://www.mps-music.com/releases/malma-maliny/?portfolioID=21 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMZKBoLCgRQ&list=RDsMZKBoLCgRQ&start_radio=1 #JanHammer #GeorgeMraz #JazzPianoTrio #Jazz #Music #MPS #MusikProduktionSchwarzwald

The Dizzy Gillespie Reunion Big Band (subtitled 20th and 30th Anniversary) is a live album by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie that was recorded at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1968 and released by MPS. The Allmusic review stated "This little-known LP actually contains one of Dizzy Gillespie's greatest performances of the 1960s... Although already 51, the trumpeter is heard at his best on this hard-to-find but essential LP" - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkndLMqY9zs&list=RDjkndLMqY9zs&start_radio=1 #DizzyGillespie #MPS #Jazz #BigBand #Music #BerlinJazzFestival

Ended Wednesday and welcomed Thursday after a swim with Jazz Meets India by Dewan Motihar Trio, The Irene Schweizer Trio, Manfred Schoof, Barney Wilen released on SABA in 1967. "This 1967 release, another exploratory J.E. Berendt production, combines a classical Indian trio of sitar, tambura, and tabla with jazz piano trio and two horns striding in between. Sitar player Dewan Motihar leads the Indian trio. A star on All-India Radio, Motihar journeyed to London where he worked on the sound tracks to the Beatle’s “Help”, and with Herbie Hancock on Antonioni’s iconic film “Blow Up”. The Swiss pianist Irene Schweizer has been one of the top European players for years...The three pieces are originals, all based on ragas, classical Indian scales each of which are based on a particular mood, occasion, time of day, year, etc..." https://www.mps-music.com/releases/jazz-meets-india/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1AEoRZ00A4 #RagaJazz #Raga #Jazz #Music #MPS #DewanMotihar #ManfredSchoof #BarneyWillen #IreneSchweizer #Sitar

New Call From France by The Jef Gilson Nonet feat. Jean Louis Chautemps, released in 1966 on SABA. London Jazz Collector wrote: Three of France’s outstanding front-line players: Jean-Louis Chautemps, Francois Janneau and Claude Lenissois – come into their own as solists in a nonet setting, an excellent showcase for their talents without an overwhelming nineteen-piece big band setting... It covers familiar Gilson territory, large ensemble with European/ romantic melody leanings but lots of fire in the belly. One, maybe two tracks I recognised from Gilson compendium albums, merely recognition of outstanding material, and much better heard in context of the whole contemporary album rather than a sampler of “picked cherries” without context. https://londonjazzcollector.wordpress.com/2024/12/20/jef-gilson-new-call-from-france-1966-mps/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l49rmbnArZU&list=RDl49rmbnArZU&start_radio=1 #JefGilson #ModalJazz #Jazz #FrenchJazz #Music #Jean-LouisChautemps #FrancoisJanneau #MPS #SABA

Free Action by Wolfgang Dauner, released on SABA in 1967. Review by Ken Dryden This adventurous session of originals by the pianist includes violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Gerd Dudek, cellist Eberhard Weber, bassist Jürgen Karg, and two drummers, Mani Neumeier and Fred Braceful. Although Dauner is the leader, he treats himself as part of the ensemble and doesn't overly dominate the performances. The music alternates between accessible melodies reminiscent of Charles Mingus in spots, though there is often a quick transformation into much looser frameworks where chord structure and rhythm is quickly abandoned. The exotic disguise adds Neumeier on tabla, though Ponty's slashing violin is similar to his avant-garde leaning records as a leader during this period.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om7hOtsDOF0 #WolfgangDauner #MPS #Jazz #FreeJazz #Music #JeanLucPonty #EberhardWeber #ManiNeumeier #GuruGuru
