New Africa is an album by American trombonist Grachan Moncur III recorded in 1969 and released on the BYG Actuel label in the same year. It features alto saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell (Art Ensemble of Chicago), pianist Dave Burrell, bassist Alan Silva and drummer Andrew Cyrille. Tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp performs on the final track. A reviewer of Dusty Groove wrote: "..The session features Moncur hitting an Archie Shepp-ish, spiritual vein in his playing – recorded in Paris with a group that includes Shepp, Roscoe Mitchell, Dave Burrell, and Andrew Cyrille. Side one's mostly the long suite 'New Africa', but it also includes the great composition 'Space Spy' – and side two features the tracks 'When' and 'Exploration'. The whole album's incredible – much more soulful than some of Moncur's 'new thing' recordings, and equally compelling!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkU54RExUk0&list=RDgkU54RExUk0&start_radio=1 #GrachanMoncurIll #NewThing #FreeJazz #BYGActuel #Jazz #Trombone #Music #AlanSilva #RoscoeMitchell #ArchieShepp

New Grass is a 1968 album by jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler released on Impulse! Records. Fred Thomas, writing for Pitchfork, attempted to place the album in perspective, commenting: "This certainly wasn't jazz of any kind, but was too overstimulated and confused to pass for the Woodstock-generation rock'n'roll it was trying to emulate. What was this?... New Grass signaled the beginning of a descent into darkness for Ayler, one that saw him grasping at ideals of redemption and healing all the way down... Ayler's spiritual message... grew weirder and more intimate as he struggled to deliver it in a way that could be universally understood... Ayler's notion of popular music was so distanced from reality that it became its own self-contained universe." - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGNVtyjTfG4&list=RDeGNVtyjTfG4&start_radio=1 #AlbertAyler #Jazz #ImpulseRecords #Music #PrettyPurdie #FreeJazz #SpiritualJazz

Marzette Watts and Company, also known as Marzette and Company, is the debut album by saxophonist and composer Marzette Watts. It was recorded in December 1966 in New York City, and was released by ESP-Disk in 1968. John Garratt, writing for PopMatters, stated: "Marzette Watts was caught in the very middle of the civil unrest of 1960s America.... Watts struggled to belong somewhere. The music of Marzette Watts & Company reflects this turmoil and the list of soon-to-be-famous names accompanying him on the album suggests that misery loved company... Half these musicians have passed on, but their 'Backdrop for Urban Revolution' continues to stay in motion, thanks to gut-punching artifacts like this one." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEz1tQIgS0M&list=RDSEz1tQIgS0M&start_radio=1 #MarzetteWatts #ByardLancaster, #CliffordThornton #SonnySharrock #KarlBerger #HenryGrimes #FreeJazz #Jazz #ESPDisk #Music

The Forest and the Zoo is an album by Steve Lacy. It was released by ESP. The music comes from a concert in Argentina.[2] The quartet is made up of Lacy on soprano saxophone, Enrico Rava on trumpet, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums. The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek awarded the album 3½ stars stating "This is not normally considered an essential part of Lacy's very large catalog, but in the 21st century it does deserve to be heartily and critically reexamined. The cover painting by the late artist Bob Thompson makes the set worth owning simply for its beauty. ".[2] An All About Jazz reviewer concluded: "Rather than the liberating spirituality sought after in so much free jazz Lacy's unit remains light-hearted and whimsical, even as it soars above the ground below." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kIFRYjTAfw&list=RD-kIFRYjTAfw&start_radio=1 #SteveLacy #EnricoRava #JohnnyDyani #LouisMoholo #Jazz #FreeJazz #Music #ESPDisk

Right Now! is an album by American saxophonist Jackie McLean recorded in 1965 and released on the Blue Note label. It features McLean in a quartet with pianist Larry Willis, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Clifford Jarvis. The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4½ stars and stated: "Altoist McLean was at the peak of his powers during this period and, inspired by the versatile rhythm section... a particularly strong example of Jackie McLean's unique inside/outside music of the 1960s." - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poz_xCQMRSU&list=RDpoz_xCQMRSU&start_radio=1 #JackieMcLean #Jazz #FreeJazz #BlueNote #Music

Sound is the debut album by free jazz saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, recorded in 1966 and released on the Delmark label. It features performances by Mitchell, Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, Maurice McIntyre, Lester Lashley and Alvin Fielder. ... Wadada Leo Smith commented: "It's no accident that Roscoe called that important piece of his Sound. Sound - not pitch - that's the difference." According to Mitchell, "[t]he musicians are free to make any sound they think will do, any sound that they hear at a particular time. That could be like somebody who felt like stomping on the floor... well, he would stomp on the floor..." - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLq2jx8oSbE&list=RDRLq2jx8oSbE&start_radio=1 #RoscoeMitchell #LesterBowie #MalachiFavors #ArtEnsembleofChicago #FreeJazz #Delmark #Music #Jazz #AlvinFielder #AACM

Heartplants by Gunter Hampel Quintet, released on SABA in 1965. Inconstant Sol wrote on their blog: In any discussion of what marks the starting point of European free jazz, this record might be high up on the list. We have posted Francois Tusques' "Free Jazz" in the past which was out in 1965 in France, certainly a turning point in the evolution of French jazz. This combo is German, however, and these are studio recordings from 1964, originally out on the Saba label.. Whether this is "free" jazz as commonly understood, is debatable imho, most of it is fairly melodic...One epithet that might fit, to the extent that these terms carry any determinate meaning, is "structural" jazz and the pieces here certainly are well organised and thought out. https://inconstantsol.blogspot.com/2012/05/gunter-hampel-quntet-heartplants.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRoEpQH8FCE&list=OLAK5uy_lEQCgx9l45CyISTIlZRLClmBv-D-BwYN4 #GunterHampel #Vibraphone #JazzFlute #ManfredSchoof #AlexandervonSchlippenbach #BuschiNiebergall #PierreCourbois #Jazz #freeJAzz #Music #SABA #MPS

Love Cry is a 1968 album by jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler, released on Impulse! Records in 1968. An article in Jazzwise stated: "The swirling psychedelic typography that adorns the cover of this often overlooked album from Ayler's discography hints at the direction he was heading at the time. Along with John Coltrane's Om and Archie Shepp’s The Magic of Ju Ju, this was experimental acid jazz at its most potent." - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvyBNTWzbLg&list=PL511fSPfMr9IGJCwwOTvIOQIfwWosgzlG&index=1 #AlbertAyler #FreeJazz #Jazz #ImpulseRecords #Music #AlanSilva #MilfordGraves

Levels and Degrees of Light is the debut album by Muhal Richard Abrams which was released on the Delmark label in 1968 and features performances of three of Abrams' compositions by Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Leroy Jenkins, Charles Clark, Gordon Emmanuel, Maurice McIntyre, Thurman Barker and Leonard Jones with vocals by Penelope Taylor and a poetry recitation by David Moore. The Penguin Guide to Jazz awarded the album 3 stars stating "Levels and Degrees of Light would be a slightly difficult record to place in a blindfold test. It is certainly not untypical of the Chicago experimentation of the period, except it seems much less chaotic, much more responsive to European tradition" - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJQhyPpfgbk&list=OLAK5uy_mdvi-ywieFixdd1ZksyDHohn8Y6XWEZ6c&index=1 #MuhalRichardAbrams #AACM #Jazz #FreeJazz #Delmark #AnthonyBraxton #Music #LeroyJenkins

Canto Of Libra by Toshiyuki Miyama And His New Herd, released on Columbia in 1970. A really free-thinking set from the Toshiuki Miyama's New Herd -- an album-long suite of 5 tracks entitled "Canto Of Libra" -- penned by pianist Masahiko Satoh, who's also the lead soloist on the piece! The horn lines of the Herd are very criss-crossed here -- stating things boldly one moment, then breaking free in a flutter of colors and tones the next -- creating a nice balance between the album's gentler, more intimate moments, and some of the more dramatic passages of the piece. In a way, the record's almost like some of Gil Evans' most experimental work, taken up a few notches -- a well-conceived session that matches similar work from the European scene at the time. - Dusty Groove https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4XGAoufyo4&list=RDd4XGAoufyo4&start_radio=1 #ToshiyukiMiyama #MasahikoSatoh #Jazz #JapaneseJazz #FreeJazz #Music

I Belong To A World That's Destroying Itself. Aka Revenge by Annette Peacock, released in 2014 on Ironic Records (and originally in 1971 on Polydor) Review by Thom Jurek Recorded live in various studios in 1968 and 1969 (written and arranged completely by Peacock), this is one of, if not the, very first record to feature a Moog Synthesizer modulating lead vocals. The rough recording aspect -- understandable given technological limitations at the time -- is actually a boon to this version; it is remarkably fresh, raw, energizing, and prophetic even now... The testifying title track is an environmental anthem that demands a return to natural sources; its poetry is just as bracing in the 21st century, and absolutely free of idle sentiment. The gospel stomp of the B-3, electric bass, and breaking drums frame her distorted vocal, adding primal urgency and steely poignancy... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gddSgf2RxPg&list=RDgddSgf2RxPg&start_radio=1 #AnnettePeacock #PaulBley #Moog #Music #FreeJazz #Jazz

Le Nouveau Jazz by François Tusques Avec Barney Wilen , released on Disques Mouloudji in 1967. Finders Keepers wrote when they reissued this LP: With track titles translating to Song For The Devil and The Witches, Francois Tusques’ rarest commercially released LP casts an early stylistic premonition of the vampire themed improvised soundtracks recorded for director Jean Rollin merely months after its release. Assembling the very same group of musical sorcerers this albums personnel (featuring, amongst others, soprano saxophonist Barney Wilen) reads like a who’s who of France’s early improvised music/free jazz scene resulting in a wholly unique European flavour while preserving the essence of other global inter-communal travellers such as Don Cherry and Krzysztof Komeda. https://www.finderskeepersrecords.com/shop/francois-tusques-with-barney-wilen-le-nouveau-jazz/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym-MLd2C9ZU&list=RDYm-MLd2C9ZU&start_radio=1 #FrançoisTusques #BarneyWilen #Jazz #FreeJazz #Music #FindersKeepers

Free Action by Wolfgang Dauner, released on SABA in 1967. Review by Ken Dryden This adventurous session of originals by the pianist includes violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Gerd Dudek, cellist Eberhard Weber, bassist Jürgen Karg, and two drummers, Mani Neumeier and Fred Braceful. Although Dauner is the leader, he treats himself as part of the ensemble and doesn't overly dominate the performances. The music alternates between accessible melodies reminiscent of Charles Mingus in spots, though there is often a quick transformation into much looser frameworks where chord structure and rhythm is quickly abandoned. The exotic disguise adds Neumeier on tabla, though Ponty's slashing violin is similar to his avant-garde leaning records as a leader during this period.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om7hOtsDOF0 #WolfgangDauner #MPS #Jazz #FreeJazz #Music #JeanLucPonty #EberhardWeber #ManiNeumeier #GuruGuru
