Mama Too Tight is an album by Archie Shepp released on Impulse! Records in 1967. The album contains tracks recorded by Shepp, trumpeter Tommy Turrentine, trombonists Grachan Moncur III and Roswell Rudd, tuba player Howard Johnson, clarinetist Perry Robinson, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Beaver Harris in August 1966. The AllMusic review by Thom Jurek states: "Shepp had hit his stride here compositionally... lots of free blowing, angry bursts of energy, and shouts of pure revelry are balanced with Ellingtonian elegance and restraint that was considerable enough to let the lyric line float through and encourage more improvisation. This is Shepp at his level best." - Wikipedia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jkg_fO9fhpk&list=RDJkg_fO9fhpk&start_radio=1 #ArchieShepp #TommyTurrentine, #GrachanMoncurIII #RoswellRudd #HowardJohnson #PerryRobinson #CharlieHaden #BeaverHarris #Jazz #FreeJazz #ImpulseRecords #Music

#FortnightFridayMusic Feb 27 2026 We were recently #Purple but this week we’re specifically #Violet. Archie Shepp Quartet, “Violets for Your Furs” from True Ballads (1997) I’ve recently become somewhat obsessed with saxophonist Archie Shepp. I cannot get enough of his soulful breathy style and penchant for playing ballads rather than the uptempo bebop favored by so many jazz greats, that neither my intellect nor attention span can handle. Shepp’s playing has a mournful tone that somehow soothes. As luck would have it, I was listening to his album True Ballads yesterday, with final track “Violets for Your Furs.” The song was composed by Matt Dennis with words by Tom Adair in 1941 and first recorded by Frank Sinatra singing with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and been recorded numerous times since, including renditions by folks with names like Coltrane and Holiday. Like many jazz tracks, it’s longer than your standard pop tune, so settle in and give it a listen - it’s gorgeous, man. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_-qLcANv9Q #jazz #saxophone #ArchieShepp #FrankSinatra #Sinatra #TommyDorsey #TommyDorseyOrchestra

New Africa is an album by American trombonist Grachan Moncur III recorded in 1969 and released on the BYG Actuel label in the same year. It features alto saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell (Art Ensemble of Chicago), pianist Dave Burrell, bassist Alan Silva and drummer Andrew Cyrille. Tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp performs on the final track. A reviewer of Dusty Groove wrote: "..The session features Moncur hitting an Archie Shepp-ish, spiritual vein in his playing – recorded in Paris with a group that includes Shepp, Roscoe Mitchell, Dave Burrell, and Andrew Cyrille. Side one's mostly the long suite 'New Africa', but it also includes the great composition 'Space Spy' – and side two features the tracks 'When' and 'Exploration'. The whole album's incredible – much more soulful than some of Moncur's 'new thing' recordings, and equally compelling!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkU54RExUk0&list=RDgkU54RExUk0&start_radio=1 #GrachanMoncurIll #NewThing #FreeJazz #BYGActuel #Jazz #Trombone #Music #AlanSilva #RoscoeMitchell #ArchieShepp

New York City R&B is a 1961 free jazz album originally recorded at a session by bassist Buell Neidlinger but subsequently reissued under joint names with the pianist Cecil Taylor. Writing for AllMusic, Scott Yanow commented: "The music is quite advanced for the period, although more accessible to the average listener than Taylor's later recordings; one can hear, even in abstract form, his connection to the bebop tradition and to Duke Ellington." - Wikipedia #CecilTaylor #BuellNeidlinger #ArchieShepp #ClarkTerry #SteveLacy #RoswellRudd #CharlesDavis #DenisCharles #BillyHiggins #Jazz #FreeJazz #Music
