@fc@universeodon.com @stormygleason@hachyderm.io @Bishopjoey@writing.exchange @krejgo@mojos.eco #FortnightFridayMusic for March 6 2026 the word is "Violet" Artist: Dinah Shore Song: Sweet Violets (1951) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqBOG5Spi1Y Normally I pick a song from my "favourites" list, which I can usually manage, but not always. Especially we _just_ did "purple" so I feel constrained from going back to "Purple Rain" for another track or something. On a whim, I am instead grabbing this one, a song I remember listening to a few times as a kid on one of my mother's old 45s. I hadn't heard it in years but ran across it a few months ago and got a new copy. I had never known that it's actually a novelty song built around a long sequence of frustrated rhymes. #music #DinahShore

#FortnightFridayMusic Feb 27 2026 We were recently #Purple but this week we’re specifically #Violet. Archie Shepp Quartet, “Violets for Your Furs” from True Ballads (1997) I’ve recently become somewhat obsessed with saxophonist Archie Shepp. I cannot get enough of his soulful breathy style and penchant for playing ballads rather than the uptempo bebop favored by so many jazz greats, that neither my intellect nor attention span can handle. Shepp’s playing has a mournful tone that somehow soothes. As luck would have it, I was listening to his album True Ballads yesterday, with final track “Violets for Your Furs.” The song was composed by Matt Dennis with words by Tom Adair in 1941 and first recorded by Frank Sinatra singing with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and been recorded numerous times since, including renditions by folks with names like Coltrane and Holiday. Like many jazz tracks, it’s longer than your standard pop tune, so settle in and give it a listen - it’s gorgeous, man. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_-qLcANv9Q #jazz #saxophone #ArchieShepp #FrankSinatra #Sinatra #TommyDorsey #TommyDorseyOrchestra

@fc@universeodon.com @Bishopjoey@writing.exchange @dgar@aus.social @electric_gumball@mastodon.social @stormygleason@hachyderm.io #FortnightFridayMusic for February 20 2026 the word is "Underground" Artist: Army of Lovers Album: Massive Luxury Overdose (1991) Song: The Particle Song The particle Z The particle Y Travel fast in a concrete tube Underground Ride mile after mile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uCbVVTouRs Army of Lovers I first heard about because one of their videos was featured on the worst-of-the-year "Fromage" show on MuchMusic. But when I saw the album at the library I was compelled to check it out. And apparently I don't mind cheesy gay Eurodisco, even when they mangle particle physics for comedic effect. #music #ArmyOfLovers
