I'd like to thank @giovaelpe for his thought provoking comment on a somewhat random post I made recently. I thought that it deserved to be explored further and our latest blog post is the result. Age verification doesn't fix any of the social media platform issues that we're trying to protect our youth from. And it likely won't work. So let's think differently about how to achieve a desired result.

Our fearless leader @ZebKing@mastodon.online provided this video that, IMO, is inspirational. It's a bit long so maybe grab a coffee or tea, get relaxed and lean into the message. Barry, the video host, provides scientific studies that demonstrate how a small % of individuals can positively impact societal norms. A key message, among many, stop doomscrolling and just do. A few people taking action can accomplish great things.

I had an earlier post about municipalities leaving X and joining Mastodon and a thought occurred to me.
Cities and towns could benefit from having their own instance running #Friendica - the closest #Fediverse equivalent to Meta/Facebook. It would allow them to have separate groups for neighborhoods or communities within their municipality, and integrate easily with other Fediverse apps. It would give them more control and focus for their communications.

X and Grok have been the subject of media scrutiny for several months, certainly deserved, and have taken some of the focus off of other social media platforms. Meta and YouTube are currently defending their companies from a lawsuit alleging their algorithms lead to addiction. It's one of many moving through the court system. One app is may be the worst but all U.S. platforms can have negative impacts due to their algorithms.

Our tech whiz @smattymatty@socialontario.ca has launched a new tool on our website that helps politicians quickly build a following on Mastodon. Getting an elected representative to commit to the #MastodonCanada community is just the 1st step. We also need to support them by helping them become effective in communication and engagement. This new resource will help with that support.
