Ahoy #selfhosting folk! I've a (likely) very silly, noob question for you all. I'm trying to spin up a Joplin instance using Portainer on my Synology NAS. I've managed to almost get it working, in that the stack installs and runs properly, but there's some issue with a setting somewhere where I can't actually get to the Joplin set-up screen. But that's all beside the point. What I'd like to know is: is it normal for the server running everything to have more or less perpetual read/write noise on its HDDs? I suspect that this is the case, which is pretty annoying since my NAS is in my living room, meaning that self-hosting will likely be a non-starter for the time being. If not, is there a way to make it so that it doesn't do that all the time, but only when actively updating the collaborative whatsits in Joplin itself?

I have used WD drives for years and even went through their warranty service before with no issues. This may all change now. I shipped them a drive about 2 months ago and am still struggling to get a replacement for my home server. Looks like they have given EVERYTHING to AI and can’t even fulfill the warranty. Need to find a 8TB drive now myself as I can’t rely on them. This is not good. #WesternDigital #SelfHosting #SelfHosted #HomeServer

Now that Hetzner has increased their rental fees, I must utilize my VPS resources. Any suggestions on which services to run? I can't run anything that takes too much disk space as I don't have much. That means no file hosting, officeware, music or podcast, videos etc. But I have plenty of free CPU and RAM. #selfhosting

Today has been IRC day! I finally got around to setting up an IRC server with IRCv3 support: ergochat. Configuration was very sensible. So far seems to be running well. I've got The Lounge set up as a web interface too. The IRCv3 features are very nice, especially getting chat backlog on connection and multiple client support. Both are on the same domain, and Caddy is the proxy for all HTTP(s) on the server. To keep the TLS for the IRCd up-to-date, I have a separate container that syncs the files from Caddy to ergo. I'm trying a new desktop client: Halloy, as a replacement for poor old IRSSI, which has no support for IRCv3 yet. On mobile I'm trying Igloo. The multiple client support means I can have the browser, desktop app, and mobile app all connected to the IRC server without having to run pounce/znc. https://github.com/ergochat/ergo https://github.com/thelounge/thelounge #irc #selfhosting

Ahh, Anfängerfehler! 🤦‍♂️ Habe vorhin meine FritzBox neu gestartet und mich gewundert, warum das VPN tot ist. Der Grund: WireGuard löst die dynamische MyFritz-IP natürlich nur einmal beim Starten auf und funkt danach fröhlich ins Leere. 🙄 #wireguard
