Ok just have to figure out what it takes to get Matrix Authentication Services up and going. Sync works, Federation works, signups, captcha, all the rest. From what I can tell MAS will at least make getting the mobile apps going less of a hassle. #matrix #discord #element

I’m an admin on a pretty large and very active Discord server but we’ve spent the weekend getting a new self hosted Matrix instance setup. Things are mostly working so far. Having some issues with device registration on mobile and user sync ATM but signups are working and the bones of the services seem to be all functional. I’ll be getting our server sync scripts running this week to start syncing the Discord and Matrix instances to fully pave the migration path. We plan on likely shutting the Discord down at the end of March if everything goes well. #matrix #discord #element

@blackwolf@meow.social I just got my band set up on a #selfhosted #Matrix / #Element. This is controversial for a number of reasons - but I'm comfortable doing the grunt work to make it happen in a way I can live with. For my non-techie friends coming over, it's close enough and they picked it right up. Our needs are basic and are covered. I realise this will not fit everyone's needs, and it's a sprawling project choked with #enshittification at the moment, but if you can sift down through it all, you might find something that works. (Not very encouraging - I know. I'm sorry - it's a little dire out there.) Another alternative that I run is #xmpp. It's less like discord than most Matrix clients, but it's fast and light - time tested and has e2ee. There is also #NextCloud Talk. I don't use it much, but it works as well as xmpp or matrix in my experience.

So I created a new matrix account – “@awoods@phpc.social:frei.chat” – to experiment. I’ve managed to join chat rooms on other matrix servers. Now I can chat with people in the Linux Unplugged and the Destination Linux communities. Ich muss noch mal Werbung machen, die APP #gadgetbridge ist Klasse. Meine watch läuft super und der Akku Verbrauch von Smartphone und Uhr hat sich auch verbessert . Es gab ein Problem mit der Übertragung der Wetterdaten und wir sind jetzt schon 2 Tage im #matrix chat am tippen um herauszufinden wo das Problem her kommen könnte, die Entwickler haben merklich Spass daran Probleme zu fixen. Diese #foss community ist herrlich, ich freue mich so sehr ein teil davon zu sein. #grapheneos #degoogled #dutgemacht

#diaspora service at poddery.com will be shut down after we ran it for 12 years. Joe Bivins ran it before we took over maintenance in 2013. It was one of the earliest diaspora pods. https://codema.in/d/Cg3RqOWk/shutting-down-poddery-s-diaspora-service-on-15th-jan-2026 Both #xmpp and #matrix services, which shared the diaspora accounts will continue operating for now. Thanks to everyone who helped maintain it till now. Even though diaspora failed to get the adoption we hoped for, #mastodon is continuing the fight for #federated social media.
