If #webDesign people could please stop overriding the #hyperlink style to remove the underline, that'd be great. Great for #accessibility, to be precise. Removing the underline makes hyperlinks hard to see, even if you have fully acute vision! I just saw a site where links are a deep reddish color, barely distinguishable from the black text. No underline. No other markings. Utter madness. #a11y #webdev

I sent a help ticket to #PokemonGo not because there is a bug or error, but because the Precious Paths requirement for Stage 11 of 12 is literally impossible for me. I don't drive due to chronic pain and medication. I don't go anywhere unless there's a real need. And I live in the middle of the countryside. Visiting 5 new Pokestops is impossible unless wifey drives me to some, and she had a full time job. I'm not /expecting/ anything per se. But it's an #accessibility issue to talk about.

The Go-Ahead Group has launched a national “Better By Bus” campaign to encourage more people to travel by bus, highlighting benefits for customers, communities and the environment. Running for 12 months across #England, from the Isle of Wight to #Yorkshire, the campaign uses radio, digital audio, billboards and on-bus branding. It aims to grow the 11 million daily bus users by promoting affordability, #accessibility, and lower environmental impact. Key benefits include fares under £3 on participating routes, fewer cars on the road, and support for local businesses, as passengers spend on average £32 per return journey locally. Go-Ahead says the campaign will help people see buses as a practical, greener alternative to car travel, while Roads and #Buses Minister Simon Lightwood notes government investment makes now an ideal time to choose bus travel. 🚌 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 https://www.go-ahead.com/news/go-ahead-launches-national-better-by-bus-campaign/

Hey, Mastodon hive mind. I'm wondering what the best sollutions are these days for accessibly interacting with IRC? I come from the era of tools like MircWithSpeech and TalkingIRC. I'm currently using ADIIRC, with its speech plugin, which I helped develop! Along with @fastfinge@fed.interfree.ca, but i'm not sure if that client is seeing a lot of development, and there's still some annoying accessibility quirks, I'm also quite comfortable with irssi, but would prefer a windows native sollution if possible. Anything still good for mIRC? Something else? #IRC #Accessibility #A11Y #Chat

Great Western #Railway has won two top honours at the Rail #Business Awards, recognising innovation and safety. The operator took Innovation of the Year for a record 200.5-mile battery train journey – the longest on a single charge – independently validated by the Railway Performance Society. Trials on the #Greenford branch line also showed fast-charging technology costing 60% less than conventional electrification, supporting lower-carbon regional services. GWR also won Safety & Security Excellence for its Resilient Futures: Bridgwater Safeguarding Response, which cut youth antisocial behaviour by 77%. Working with more than 20 partners, including British Transport Police and Railway Children, the scheme focused on safeguarding, staff training and community initiatives. GWR was highly commended for #accessibility improvements. https://news.gwr.com/news/great-western-railway-scoops-top-awards-at-industry-leading-rail-business-awards

@rocketsoup@mastodon.social think about how accessible are your designs from the very beginning. Here’s a great book that will help you out, and is currently free! https://mastodon.social/@wtrmt/115967736149714518 #UX #accessibility

The #London Assembly Transport Committee has published its report, Accessibility and Inclusion in #Transport Planning, examining how Transport for London (TfL) uses data to understand #travel across the capital. While London’s network supports around 8.6 million daily journeys, the Committee found it does not fully reflect the needs of all Londoners, including #disabled people, older and younger residents, low-income households, parents and women. It highlights gaps in the London #Travel Demand Survey, late equality assessments and limited stakeholder engagement. Barriers include faulty lifts, inconsistent information, safety concerns, service reductions and digital exclusion. The Committee calls for updated data collection, earlier #accessibility reviews, budget equality assessments and broader engagement to improve fairness, functionality and long-term resilience. https://www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/what-london-assembly-does/london-assembly-press-releases/fairness-functionality-and-future-accessibility-inclusion-transport-planning

RANT: Started using the new ENFit feeding tube bags and accessories. ENFit was an industry-wide change to "fix" a problem that didn't exist. I put it off as long as I could. Feeding tubes have been around since the 1800s, pretty much unchanged. There wasn't a problem "mixing up" feeding tubes with intravenous IVs. I shouldn't have to have to use a wrench to use my feeding tube or its accessories, like medication syringes. I shouldn't have to use an ENfit cleaning kit because stomach contents (puke) now reside in the connections after using them because you can't flush the cavity. #Medical #MedMastodon #enshittification #Enteral #Nursing #FeedingTube I shouldn't have to spend a hundred dollars to buy various adapters to use my stocked up medical supplies or spend thousands to buy new ENFit supplies. Of course, nothing is being produced "generically" now. It's all proprietary and shared by the few large mega-medical supply manufacturers through a trade organization they formed just for enteral (feeding tubes) care called the Global Engineered Device Supplier Association After 14 years with my feeding tube, ENfit has now taken away my #accessibility to use my feeding tube and self-administer some of my medical care. The ENFit transition is a global patient safety initiative to standardize enteral feeding tube connectors, replacing old "legacy" connectors with a new, twisting design to prevent misconnections with IV lines. https://stayconnected.org/enfit/

@OKdad@theforkiverse.com I think this is a misunderstanding, but there is also a lack of information about why people in the Fediverse often value photos that include alt text. An alternative would be to simply hide all photos without alt text. This works with most ActivityPub projects. It would therefore be easy for people to hide these images or block people who refuse to comply (this is not about forgetting to do so occasionally). Why do people point this out? The Fediverse brings together many people who reject the increasing practice of right-wing media actors to exclude people. That is why active anti-discrimination practices are part of the moderation rules found in almost all Fediverse systems, despite all their differences. The instance “theforkiverse.com” also writes in its rules: "Be inclusive of all people and points of view. This is particularly true for Black, Indigenous, and people of color, and people in the LBGTQ+ community. We will remove any homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, or racist content without discussion." Even if it is not explicitly stated, in my view this also implies corresponding behavior against the exclusion of people on the basis of a disability. Tolerating intolerant behavior has not worked since the “tolerance paradox” at the latest. People want to have a better virtual social network in the Fediverse; they don't want minorities or people who are discriminated against and excluded on the major right-wing platforms because of a disability to be marginalized. That's why many people are campaigning for users who post photos to remember to include alt text. Without alt text, people who rely on screen readers because they have visual impairments are excluded. How can it be that advocating for inclusion is perceived as aggressive? Didn't the Forkiverse want to be a place that completes the Fediverse and makes the internet a better place? And now I'm reading the same whining we hear from white men on X when they have to use alt text. Crazy world. #Forkiverse #Inclusion #Handicap #accessibility #Fediverse @jdmsn@theforkiverse.com

Spending some time pondering site navigation for my new website. Must reflect: indie web values, high accessibility for all kinds of browsers & readers, simplicity and elegance. And not be a pig to code and maintain. #indieweb #browser #accessibility

I don't even post much on here and doubt this will reach many, but whatever: I lost my job recently and am looking for new work, would appreciate any leads. I'm a certified digital accessibility specialist with lived experience as a disabled trans person, and I also have extensive web developer experience. Please get in touch if you know of any appropriate openings ❤️ Edit: thanks to replies for pointing out that I should add location details! I'm located in Stockholm, Sweden but will happily work remotely if possible and can travel on occasion if needed - not looking to fully relocate though! I can also be found on LinkedIn, a site I don't particularly like but accept the necessity of existing on, here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thea-walther #accessibility #a11y #getfedihired

#Disability #Rights #UK are seeking responses from #disabled people and disabled people's organisations to their survey calling for a UK #Accessibility #Act, that would sit alongside the #Equality Act 2010, establishing a range of accessibility #standards. The survey will close on Tuesday 31 March at 17:00. https://www.disabilityrightsuk.org/accessibility-act

@pixelate@tweesecake.social Hi, thank you for your feedback on accessibility and open source technologies. I always read your posts with great interest in order to improve the accessibility of FreeBSD, a UNIX and open source operating system. At the FreeBSD Developer Summit in Dublin 2024, I showed other developers (using simulators) the challenges faced by color-blind, low-vision, and blind users. The @FreeBSDFoundation@mastodon.social is currently sponsoring the "Vision Accessibility" project to improve accessibility for users with visual impairments. At the Developer Summit in Zagreb 2025, I presented the new accessibility handbook https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/accessibility/ focused on the assistive technologies currently available in the system, including practical examples to help developers better understand these challenges. I am in contact with organizations supporting people with low vision, blindness, and deafblindness to implement Braille display subsystem for FreeBSD and to develop interfaces specifically designed to be used with screen readers. Any feedback or suggestions are very welcome. #accessibility #FreeBSD #UNIX #openSource

Welp ... I was just informed through a Slack DM that I will no longer be working at the place I'm working at in two weeks' time. That is, evidently, how we handle that now. Not entirely unexpected as the writing on the wall was evident, but still not loving that approach for reasons I haven't quite worked out yet. If anyone needs help with their #accessibility from someone with both native #screenReader experience and a coding background, keep me in mind I guess :) #fediHired #layoffs
