Happy Beltane, everybody. Today is the third festival celebrated by neopagans and other like-minded people during the Wheel of the Year. Here’re a couple of fun facts you might not be familiar with: Often regarded as a fire festival, people attending walk around or between bonfires and sometimes leap over the flames or embers. At this time, household fires are doused and then relit from the Beltane bonfire. The aos sí (often referred to as spirits or fairies) are thought to be especially active at Beltane and the goal of many Beltane rituals is their appeasement. Many scholars see the aos sí as remnants of the pagan gods and nature spirits of times gone by. At dawn or before sunrise on Beltane, maidens would roll in the dew or wash their faces with it, as morning dew was thought to bring good luck and health. It’s also thought that a man who washed his face with soap and water on Beltane will grow long whiskers on his face. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #How to Succeed… #Author #Novel

  1. Husband of the Year by M.A. Wardell. A satisfactory end to the Teachers in Love, major improvement over the third one (which I hated), but not as good as the first two (I don’t care about babies so). Would have enjoyed a triple wedding instead. Good series overall, gay male romance written by a gay male ;) #Bookstodon

  1. The Editor by Steven Rowley. A new (gay) writer’s book catches the attention of Jaqueline Onassis, who forces him to deal with his own relationship with his mother. So much better than his Guncle books! #Bookstodon

  1. Fraternity by Andy Mientus. It’s 1991. A queer secret society at a boarding school finds a book with dark magic, and things go wrong. Really enjoyed this one and hope Mientus writes more in the future when not acting. #Bookstodon

  1. Exquisite Things by Abdi Nazemian This wants to be V.E. Schwab crossed with Oscar Wilde and sorta works sorta doesn’t. In the 1890s a queer teen becomes immortal and in 1920 Boston makes his crush immortal and they try to make things to work in homophobic Thatcher 1980 and meet again in 2025. #Bookstodon

  1. Last First Kiss by Julian Winters. I enjoyed getting back into the world of I Think They Love You, but this one wasn’t as good. Jordan once had an awkward teen kiss and runs into the guy (his cousin’s BFF) and the sparks are still there. I want Javi’s story next please! #Bookstodon

  1. The Celebrants by Steven Rowley. A group of uni friends agree to give each other funerals while they’re still alive after their friend dies. Really disappointed in this one. Characters were insufferable, and I didn’t care about anyone other than the Jordans. #Bookstodon

  1. Always the Almost by Edward Underhill. A trans male teen pianist falls for the new guy after a breakout. I was disappointed since I loved Underhill’s other books, but this one was just kinda there for me. I did love Stefania, the piano teacher though. #Bookstodon

  1. That’s What Friends Are For by Wade Rouse. Four elderly gay friends who put on a Golden Girls drag show The Golden Gays live together and deal with life.

The book tried to do too much, and it would have been better to either focus on ONE or, because I think the stuff is there, do a series of four books, one focusing on each of the men. As it was, it felt rushed and dragged on at the same time. #Bookstodon

  1. A Crushing Walk in Cornwall by Nicholas George. Chase finds himself on a third long-walk in England with a murder. I might be the oddity that wants more of the walk (and Chase’s relationship with Mike! Who was barely in this one) and less of the murders. But that’s also the hiker in me who burnt out on murder mysteries in the 1990s and never recovered. #Bookstodon

I love this place, but really, the social media network that I really want to make happen is the one on my library website. If you're in the Bibliocommons community, follow me! https://bpl.bibliocommons.com/user_profile/79296909 #bookstodon

Speaking of book recommendations: if anyone would like a personalized book recommendation, please feel free to ask! I've probably read more books, particularly older books, than 99% of the human race. And my memory for books is unusually good. So I'd be glad to make a recommendation for anyone who needs one. Now, I •will• note that I haven't read that many books that were published after the year 2000 or so. I've read some, and I'm trying to read more, but just not that many. Also I've seen a trend in book recommendation requests that I really can't oblige. Some people seem to want books that are written by someone who is exactly like themselves and which are about someone exactly about themselves. So, for example: "I want a book written by a left-handed red-haired triple amputee with a birthmark the shape of an iguana on a pineapple who's only attracted to toothless Algerian basket-weavers and has an allergy to water. The book needs to be about a stamp collector who has a pet monkey with purple fur and learns to overcome their fear of leprechauns." Okay, I'm exaggerating but not by that much. If you want a recommendation like that, I can't help you! Otherwise, I'm all ears. 🤣 #Books #Bookstodon #QuasitBookRecs #bookrecs #bookrecommendations

#PennedPossibilities 1001 — Is your MC confident or not? Tell us why. Nathan, my protagonist, was born confident. In some respects you could probably describe him as being a confident trickster rather than a confidence trickster. Vicky, his partner in crime, started off not believing in magic even though she knew her mother was a hereditary witch. When she opens up to the idea in the first book she lacks confidence in her skills and has a tendency to go at like a bull at a gate throwing fireballs around with gusto. As she begins to become more subtle in her use of magic, so her confidence grows but I’ve got a feeling she’s going to end up being over-confident and somewhere down the line it’s going to cause her problems. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #Author #Novel

A travel book. In the steamy globe-trotting romance novel, Flicka's LOVERS, Flicka travels to Japan, China, Thailand, Paris, Germany, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. She gets around other places, too. This backdrop is Paleochora, Greece. #travel #fun #novel #novels #books #bookstodon #booksky #Readers #reading #readingCommunity #people #places #world #destinations #globe #fiction #romance #romanceReaders #romancelandia #marissa #book #booktok #writer #author
