After Atlas is a 2016 science fiction novel by British writer Emma Newman. It was first published in the United States as a paperback original in November 2016 by Roc Books... After Atlas is the second book in Newman's four-book Planetfall series, and takes place on Earth forty years after the spaceship Atlas departed to find God in the first book, Planetfall. - Wikipedia Whilst I really enjoyed Planetfall, this dystopian noir murder mystery loose sequel to it, was even better. Published in 2016, but sadly, the repressive gov-corp world ruled entirely by profit imagined here in the middle of the 22nd century seems even more likely now, though I hope it does not come to pass. #EmmaNewman #SciFi #Novels #Reading #Dystopia #Planetfall

Shaft is a 1970 detective novel by Ernest Tidyman. It is the first novel in the John Shaft novel series. The novel debuted the character John Shaft and inspired both the 1971 film Shaft and its sequels. - Wikipedia It is strange to read a book and keep hearing the theme music of the film in my head, but that is what happens when you read a book after hearing the soundtrack all your life! I bought an original of the soundtrack by Issac Hayes for 50p in an Oxfam in the 80s before I saw the film. As for the novel, it is a pulpy, gripping crime tale set in early 70s New York. Shaft is most definitely misogynistic, homophobic, and antisemitic, and this seemed to be tacitly approved by white author Tidyman, but maybe just reflecting the world and the attitudes a character like Shaft would be likely to have. #Shaft #ErnestTidyman #Novels #Reading #blaxploitation #privateeye #NewYork

Happy Friday and Happy National Strawberry Day. I wrote much of The Fifth Seduction late last March in So.Cal. when fresh red ripe strawberries were in season. Bought a carton from a little stand near the Flower Fields of Cralsbad. So delicious, ripe red strawberries! #strawberries #strawberry #food #March #california #flower #author #writing #writer #writer #novels #novel #books #bookstodon #fridayReads #friday #scribesAndMakers #mastodon #love #romance

Vineland is a 1990[a] postmodern novel by Thomas Pynchon set in California in 1984, the year of President Ronald Reagan's reelection. Through flashbacks, its characters, who lived through the 1960s, account for the free spirit of rebellion of that decade, and describe the traits of the "fascistic Nixonian repression" and the war on drugs that clashed with it. The book portrays transformations in U.S. society from the 1960s to the 1980s. - Wikipedia My first Thomas Pynchon novel, despite having meant to read him for decades. A dense, intense read, but very worthwhile, and whilst about Reagan's Amerikka and what preceded it is nonetheless very relevant to the events we are living through today. I look forward to reading the loose adaptation, One Battle After Another. #ThomasPynchon #Reading #Novels #USA #America #Nixon #Reagan #WaronDrugs

“Easy. They just let us forget. Give us too much to process, fill up every minute, keep us distracted, it's what the Tube is for, and though it kills me to say it, it's what rock and roll is becoming - just another way to claim our attention, so that beautiful certainty we had starts to fade, and after a while they have us convinced all over again that we really are going to die. And they've got us again.” ― Thomas Pynchon, Vineland #ThomasPynchon #Reading #Vineland #Quotes #Novels #Books
