#ScribesAndMakers for April 30: What's a problem you solved in your creative work this month? A: We took a deep dive into character and word spacing for the book to tighten up the text and avoid unsightly rivers, oddly spaced lines, and pages that just had one sentence.

#ScribesAndMakers Apr 30: What's a problem you solved in your creative work this month? I've been working sporadically on a story with a good friend who's also a well-regarded veteran author. It wasn't gelling for him and it wasn't gelling for me, and we were on the verge of abandoning it. This month I learned he's dying, and wants me to finish it for him. It's given me new determination to turn it into the best damn story I am capable of. But I'd sooner have junked the story, and kept Ted.

#ScribesAndMakers 4/30 - What's a problem you solved in your creative work this month? I figured out the (tiny) plot for the second Wolf Bonus Story and finished writing it. I also know two ways of getting the cover for that one, so I should be able to set it all up for my readers soon. This one will have Liz and Eric as MC, as it's for Book 2. Plus I now have a plan for my next release (Moon Rises) in July, and I'm actually organizing marketing for the launch. #WritingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers 4/28. Are you interested in etymology? Is there a word with an origin you find especially interesting? Interested in? Yes, I like to know how words have evolved. And I think it's important for full comprehension. Give a specific one? Pass. #writing #writingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers 27th Apr 2026. Reticent? I'm often reticent to engage with these single-word prompts because I'm usually concerned about over- or under-analyzing the question asked.

#ScribesAndMakers April 26. #TTMD What is a common trope you both love and hate (or hate that you love) and why? ---- I’ll give you two: Omegaverse. I have such mixed feels over this. It started as a werewolf thing, and I was reading all the werewolf romances around the time it became popular, so I found it pretty quick. I’ve seen some really good and interesting things done with the trope, but so, so much of it is ‘we want to have our sexism but make it gay.’ And then people started piling ‘fated mate’ trope on top, and I just… yeah, noped out for a few years. I’ve recently started reading a bit of it again, most in platonic fanfic that emphasized the family/pack aspect without the romance. The Good King. I have a whole essay about the problems with this one: https://jessmahler.com/the-good-king-makes-a-good-fantasy/ At the same time, I admit I love the stories where the rightful heir returns or the true king faces down the great evil. I think the appeal is ultimately the same as with superhero stories – the idea of people in power doing something good with it, and the ability to project ourselves as the people with power doing the right thing. @willelm@indieauthors.social

∆ 25. Our featured creator does "a bit of educational activism on the side." Do you do any activism through your creative work? I often work issues that are meaningful to me into the story, but I don't think of it as activism. I think of my writing as more likely to connect with people who share my views than change minds, but I'd certainly be happy if someone changed their views because of something I wrote. #ScribesAndMakers

#ScribesAndMakers 4/24. Our next featured creator has a "love/hate affair with common tropes." What's your relationship with tropes? We're just good friends. Don't listen to gossip. I have no problem with them in general, tropes make the reader comfortable and can be a shorthand around long explanations. But it's also nice to liven things up by breaking tropes. The writers of Buffy (Marti Noxon et al) loved doing this. #writing #writingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers 4/23 Have fairy tales influenced any of your creative work? Not particularly - I find local legends and folklore much more interesting. They also have all sorts of fantastic elements - but they are also embedded into real world geography, as well as culture and history. "Magical realism", if you will.

#ScribesAndMakers April 22. What fictional character (from any media) do you find the scariest? A: The evil, leering steam shovel that threatens to destroy the Little House’s peaceful environs in Virginia Lee’s “The Little House.” (Second place goes to any mob ruled by violence and arrogance)

#ScribesAndMakers Apr 22 - What fictional character (from any media) do you find the scariest? Jaws (the shark of course). Loved the book and the film ...but there's no way I'm swimming anywhere where one might actually turn up. So, still scared. 🙂

Have you ever read or performed your work in front of an audience? Yes. It's a rare privilege and one I'm unlikely to exercise again in my current hermetic existence. #ScribesAndMakers

Do you ever read out loud, either to yourself or someone else? At one time, it's how I published my books. Podcasting them before ebooks really took off. When I was still able to travel, I would do readings at conventions. It was fun getting the immediate feedback from the audience. Rarely any more, since I don't travel. I had to decide whether I wanted to write more books or read the ones I wrote. Difficult choice. I chose more books and outsourced the reading. #ScribesAndMakers
