#WordWeavers March 8. How do you approach stereotypes while creating characters?
I don't think much about stereotypes while creating characters. Since it's a secondary world, the stereotypes of our world don't really play into it. I do have in-world stereotypes that the characters talk about, but that's only really for some specific purpose.

I reread the story to catch any plot holes, but it's also what I tell my alpha reader (my wife) to look for while she's reading it. It is a lot easier to get her perspective on what's missing.

For me? That other people have liked the story and want to continue reading it.
In general? That other people find this whole thing a bit overwhelming. It can be a lot to take on and I certainly feel it at times, so it's nice to know that I am not alone.

#WordWeavers Mar 2. Do you write scenes out of order? If so, how do you decide their arrangement?
Not intentionally. I have had scenes I've moved around while editing, but I usually write scenes in the order they appear in the book, not always in timeline order though.
For the scenes I've moved around, I just found they fit better in another place. The characters revealed something better left for later. Plus, I changed some of the lead up to the scene.

Although I did finish my second round of edits on the sequel to SotE, I've basically done no writing this month. It's been an absolute struggle to get anything started. Life has been overwhelming and I just haven't been able to write in the times I had available. Hopefully March will be better.

Nope. If I edited while I wrote, I would never finish anything. I tinker a lot and go through a number of drafts with different language when I edit. I have to leave it to the end to get things done.

#WordWeavers Feb 27. Which of your characters do you find especially interesting? Why?
I think Vrai is the most interesting to me. He has a pretty complex backstory, that we learn more about in the spin-off and though he's discovering the world's secrets along with the characters, he has a much different perspective on it.

Yes but only if I don't think the story is salvageable. It's rare I give up on a story, I try a lot to write myself out of a lot of issues, but if I don't feel like the story works, I'll abandon it.

Yes, there's an antagonist, though we don't see too much of her until the second half of the book. We get introduced to her in the second book, so I'm just continuing that storyline.

#WritersCoffeeClub Feb 24. What’s your greatest challenge in fleshing out your setting?
I think it's determining what parts are necessary to include and how deep to describe them. I don't want to overload the reader with world-building but I also don't want the world to feel thin and hollow.
