#WritersCoffeeClub 14/3 Do you think readers want new experiences in structure or narrative, or do they prefer what's familiar?

I think most readers want the familiar, but with a twist or two to keep it from being boring. The challenge for the writer is to push the familiar envelope, to push the reader just far enough out of their comfort zone without losing them.

Damp, cold, drismal* day out there. I managed about 1100 words today and didn't do much else. Maybe tomorrow I'll have more energy.

*Drismal is a word coined by a friend of mine, a blend of "drizzly" and "dismal." It's the perfect word for weather like this.

Something I was wondering about this morning: native English speakers, do you pronounce initial [wh] and initial [w] differently? I.e., is there a difference in the way you pronounce 'which' and 'witch' or 'whether' and 'weather'?

Please boost for reach.

#WritersCoffeeClub Feb 25: What’s a unique habit you have while writing?

I don't have a unique writing habit. I sit at my desk, drink much too much coffee, and write on my computer. None of that is unique.

Well, I knew I wasn't going to be able to relax and start writing until I had dug my car out from the snow and moved it to a plowed space in the parking lot. So I went out and did that, moving it around a half block away.

I started walking back and said hi to a neighbor. We talked for a while. Then another neighbor came out, then a third. I ended up standing out in the snow for over an hour chatting.

Now I need to get feet warm again.

Good morning!

Well, it's still snowing and will continue snowing for another few hours, but it doesn't look like we'll get the 18-22 inches (45-55cm) that they predicted. I'd say we have about 10-12 inches (25-30cm) of snow right now, or perhaps a little more. We'll get a couple of inches more before it stops.

I'm relieved it was less than they said. And I'm even more relieved that the power stayed on throughout.

In a little while I'll go out and try to dig my car out and move it. The plows are out there and there will be some clear spots. But first, coffee and breakfast.

Then I'm staying in. The township is asking people to stay off the roads as much as possible until they can clear them.

Have a good one, my friends.

#WritersCoffeeClub 23. What techniques help you write a difficult second act?

I don't think in terms of acts. When I get stuck, I just keep playing with what I have until inspiration strikes. Sometimes it takes a while. Given the genre I write in, another murder usually helps.

1000 words written, two loads of laundry washed, folded, and put away, clean flannel sheets on the bed, catbox cleaned, back exercises done, dishwasher run.

Time to relax for the rest of the day.

Good morning!

We only got a light coating of snow, maybe 1/2 inch, and that will melt since today's afternoon temperature will be above freezing. So it won't be the slushy mess I thought it might be, but I'm still glad I went out yesterday and can stay home today.

Today will be writing (as always) and laundry. Nothing exciting to say about either one of them.

Have a good one, my friends.

#WordWeavers 16/2: If your MC had a statue put up in their honor, what would it be for?

I suppose for bringing murderers to justice. But it wouldn't happen. This is the 1200s, and the only statues to be made would be of saints or possibly kings.

Good morning!

It's sunny outside and it's above freezing in the early morning for the first time in weeks. Not much above -- 33F, and what? 1 or 2C? It's supposed to get into the 40s F, so some of the snow might melt.

This morning I have another visit to the podiatrist. I don't expect anything to come of it. My foot still hurts, and I doubt there's much he can do about it. But I'll go talk to him anyway.

Have a good one, my friends.

#WordWeavers Feb 11 - MC POV: Sit down, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. What do you see in your mind's eye?

The yellow eyes and skin of the dead beggar. Cordwainer will likely see nothing else until he discovers who poisoned him.

Aside from the official birthday song and the ubiquitous Beatles song, is there a song about birthdays you like?

I can't think of one.

#writersCoffeeClub 2/11: What time of day is most productive for you? Why?

Mornings. By afternoon my chronic pain is too severe for me to much of anything.

When it was 5 degrees Fahrenheit and dry, I could get warm. Now it's 36 degrees and humid. I had to turn the thermostat up several degrees and I'm still cold.

Just to be clear: does the SAVE act (if it passes) mean that we all must bring birth certificate or passport to vote, or does the requirement for current name to match birth certificate apply only to those newly registering to vote? How is this going to work?

Even though I'm not a football fan, I do enjoy all the Superb Owl photos every year. Here's a nice one, photographed by Stan Tekiela.

Good morning! We're up in the double digits this morning at 14F (-10C) and we're actually supposed to have a high temperature of 32F (0C). It's a heat wave! Scrolling through my feed this morning, it struck me that we have no taboo swear words left. We have normalized the ones we had so that they barely raise an eyebrow any longer. The only truly taboo words we have in English these days are racial and ethnic slurs. I mean, what am I supposed to say if I shut my hand in the car door? How do I express my rage and pain? With words that used to shock, but now are used in the most trivial of circumstances? It's a fucking shame. Have a good one, my friends. #Today

#writersCoffeeClub 1/27: What's a technical skill you think should be more widespread? Among writers? The ability to write a grammatical sentence and punctuate it properly, without needing an editor to tell the difference between similar words like affect/effect or discrete/discreet, etc. Language is our medium. If we don't understand the technicalities of how it works, we will never write as well as we might otherwise.

RE: https://techhub.social/@rayckeith/115891885954410747 Also: you give someone free rein (as in, what you use to control horses), not free reign (that's what Donald Trump wants for himself).
