Jess Mahler

@JessMahler@indiepocalypse.social
mastodon 4.5.7+glitch

Jess' weird fish-out-of-water life has left them with an enduring love/hate affair with common tropes. The relationship counselor recommended they break it off, but they just keep coming back to play with tropes (and fuck them up) some more.

In between their tropic indulgences, they write queer fantasy with aromantic, neurodivergent, and generally 'weird' characters, take care of their family, argue halakha, and try to do a bit of educational activism on the side.

(Some details: adopted, queer, disabled, neurodivergent, white settler, Jewish, writer, parent, anti-capitalist. Learning to be anti-racist and learning about decolonization.)

#PennedPossibilities 946: Do any of your characters have food allergies or sensitivities?

Not in Smear. In Planting Life in a Dying City, Kyawtchais has texture sensitivities that affect what ey can eat. It didn't come up much in the story, but I think it got a mention after eir meltdown.

#WordWeavers 3.2 — Do you write scenes out of order? If so, how do you decide their arrangement?

I usually have a summary of the story written before I start writing actual scenes, so I always have a general idea of what order everything will go in.

I don't intentionally write out of order, but sometimes as I write I'll hit a point where I'm not clear on how a scene should go. So I'll write scene one, the put in a note 'scene two goes here, make sure x happens, then write scene three, and when I get to the end I go back to the beginning and go through again expanding all those notes into proper scenes.

#WritersCoffeeClub 3.2 — Does your overall goal differ from project to project?
Hm. I seems that I understood yesterday's question rather differently than some other folks.

For me, i would say the overall goal of my craft is a completed project, whether that project is a story or a piece of weaving.

But each project has it's own purpose beyond just existing.

As I said yesterday, the goal of Smear is to tell a story about how a entrenched and corrupt system can be taken down by making an end-run around their seat of power.

The goal of The Last Lady of Luna was to challenge myself to write a 'regular' paranormal romance novel.

The goal of The Price of Survival is to explore individual survival when under genocidal threat, with inspiration from the experiences of Ashkenazi Jews in Middle Ages/Renaissance Europe.

I haven't figured out the goal of Coven and Chord yet, except that I want to have fun with it.

#MutualAid #TransCrowdFund
Hey, so Social Security fucked us over and we're not getting partner's disability check this month. We need $50 immediately for basic necessities like toilet paper, and $500 within the week for rent and electric. If either rent or electric are not paid by the 15th, we can get evicted.

Any help is appreciated.
