#PennedPossibilities 957 — Does your MC have or wear a signature colour? I have no idea. Frankly, a better question would be whether they have a signature hominin subspecies, because serial reincarnation via lossy brain scanning and downloading into a new body means next time around you might not even have the same number of toes, let alone skin colour. As for clothing, they tend to do with the currently-prevailing fashions from one century to the next …

#PennedPossibilities 957. Does your MC have or wear a signature color? Lucifer is often wearing something vivid purple. this has to do with decadence (purple being an outrageously expensive colour); i was also thinking of the Whore of Babylon, who is specifically mentioned to be wearing purple and scarlet. Lucifer uses her powers to shapeshift her clothes into whatever form she wants, including colour, so she doesn't have to worry about paying for these things. Eleanor, on the other hand, is not colour-coded, and i make little mention of what she is wearing. her aesthetic is about fading into the background, and trying not to be seen.

@therivercrow@bardicperspiration.club I mean I think the movies are totes better BC they cut all of the "Frodish begat Frodar who begat Frodingle" stuffs and rly it is obv that Tolkien was a language nerd who needed context ha ha. But its still a good story. Fr. #PennedPossibilities

#PennedPossibilities 950 — Can your MC swim? If not, why not? If so, how did they learn? Oh this one's fun. I write Veilguard fanfic and in the game, your character can't swim, so that means Alana canonically cannot, despite growing up in a city of canals by the coast. Alana: "Have you seen what's floating in those canals? Yeah, no. Drowning is preferable to whatever disease you'd get from trying to swim in that so-called water."

#PennedPossibilities 949 — How do you manage stress related to writing? By...not writing? I don't know, it's hard especially in fanfic spaces where there's such a constant stream of writing from other people, and a subtle pressure to put stuff out there. But, I'm trying to rediscover writing as a fun thing, not a thing I feel like I need to do. It's not my job, it's a hobby and I'm not trying to grow an audience. So, trying to write what I want when I want, and not when I don't.

#PennedPossibilities 949 — How do you manage stress related to writing? Oh dear... By ruminating... venting... panicking... then after wearing myself out, I sit and listen to music quietly, paying attention to that, just monotasking, and then all is well again. Need to learn to skip the first three steps xD

#PennedPossibilities 949 — How do you manage stress related to writing? It is hard, especially in fandom spaces where there's a subtle pressure to keep putting out new stuff, and some people manage to write so much. But I guess not caring? In a good way, I mean. I'll write what I want when I feel in the mood to write, and not when I don't. It definitely means I have lower engagement, but that's where the not caring bit comes in. If two or three people enjoy what I write, that's good enough for me.

#PennedPossibilities 946 Do any of your characters have food allergies or sensitivities? Unless it's a significant contributor to the plot of the story, I would treat characters' food issues the way I treat describing their bathroom habits: don't describe interruptions that deral the story and may be distasteful or unpleasant for some readers. But if a protagonist is deathly allergic to wasp stings and has to escape a pursuer by running through woods where there's a nest … that's legit plot!

#PennedPossibilities 944 — Have you ever written anything while inebriated that you later ended up keeping in your WIP? Ages ago. Now I've been sober for more than 38 years, so it's not a thing that could happen.

944. Have you ever written anything while inebriated that you later ended up keeping in your WIP? I'm honestly not sure. Generally if I'm inebriated, it's because I'm trying to be social, not trying to be creative, so I don't think I've written all that much while inebriated. I can't rule it out, but there is nothing specific that comes to mind. #PennedPossibilities

#PennedPossibilities 935 — What are your writing goals for 2026? Lv1: finish chapter 18 and declare book 2 done! Lv2: Take a giant ass bite out of book 3! I'm not optimistic enough to hope i can get it done too. Not that I won't try.

#PennedPossibilities 940 — Do you regret anything about the creation of your WIP? The fact that I have to actually write it? I regret some of the stuff that happens to Alana in one of my WIPs, which tbh I might never share, but I had to write what happened.

#PennedPossibilities 939 — How would your MC respond if they were falsely accused of a crime? (Current WIP): It's very unlikely indeed that Jum or Tabitha would ever be falsely accused of a crime, because they're full-time professional *career criminals*. They will pick pockets, cheat at cards, rob banks, and take over planetary governments with cheerful aplomb. If you got them in an interview room and convinced them to confess to everything they'd done, it'd take the rest of your working life.

#PennedPossibilities 937 • Which of your characters is the most controversial? Why? In the Laundry Files, probably Fabian Everyman MP, who becomes Prime Minister of the UK after book 8. I mean, "Strong and Stable Goverment Under the New Management" sounds like a reasonable campaign slogan until you realize he's the living avatar of Nyarlathotep, the Black Pharaoh, and he's basically farming us for our souls! Also, pay no attention to the giant skull rack at Marble Arch, or the mass executions!

#PennedPossibilities 936 — Tell us about something that disgusts your MC. Current WIP: both MCs quietly despise stupid rich people and take a vindictive glee in separating them from their wealth and privilege. Also, Jum detests violence: Tabitha detests patriarchy. (As patriarchal systems are inherently violent, Jum follows Tabitha's lead on this subject: in return, Tabitha mostly takes care of murdering their enemies so Jum doesn't have to.)

#PennedPossibilities 936 — Tell us about something that disgusts your MC. MC 1 is disgusted by hallmark romance, fluffy romance, and all the romantic cliches. MC 2 is disgusted by arrogance, bitterness, and condescension.

#PennedPossibilities 935 — What are your writing goals for 2026? Deliver "Starter Pack" to agent for sale (in hand, by end of Feb) Execute another rewrite of "Ghost Engine", this time refactoring as sequel to "Starter Pack" (start: by end of Feb, probable duration: 6 months+). Deliver to agent. Stretch goal: finish untitled New Management novella (on pause at 24,000 words since 2024) Joker goal: get bitten by another attack novel, maybe? And have cataract surgery on the remaining eye.

#PennedPossibilities 934 — Do you have a book cover for your WIP? I don't have a book cover for my WIP for the novel WIP, but for a fic I was writing this morning, I am commissioning an artwork. The problem is, I'm still not sure which scene of the short story I'd like illustrated. I'm struggling with that part.

#PennedPossibilities 934 — Do you have a book cover for your WIP? No. I'm 100% trad published and cover design/art is the publisher's job. That would currently be Tor in the USA and Orbit in the UK. (They sometimes remember to ask me if I like it before it's frozen …!)
