Digital checkpoints will crop up all over the Internet after UK MPs backed new powers to expand age verification. The only way to block under-16s is to run checks on everybody. That's millions more people having to hand over personal data to unregulated providers just to access everyday services. Papers, please! Digital ID age checks have taken another lunge forward. UK MPs have agreed to new powers to expand age verification across online platforms. More and more everyday web services will be locked behind digital checkpoints, despite the serious privacy and security risks of this system. “In less than a year, we’ve gone from proposals to check ID for porn to the prospect of checking ID to access social media or unlock everyday features such as livestreams or feeds. These online ID systems put both children and adults’ sensitive data at risk.” 🗣️ @JamesBaker@social.openrightsgroup.org for ORG. #ageverification #digitalid #socialmedia #socialmediaban #freedomofexpression #childrensbill #privacy #ukpoltics #ukpol

The UK Parliament continues to pursue an approach to online safety that doesn't work. The Australian under-16 social media ban has failed to make any difference and people have sought ways around it. Digital ID age checks come at the cost of everyone's privacy and free expression. The math ain't mathing. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/most-australian-teens-admit-social-111400429.html #ageverification #digitalid #socialmedia #socialmediaban #freedomofexpression #childrensbill #privacy #ukpoltics #ukpol

The problem of online harms lies with the underlying business models of social media platforms. Digital ID age checks do nothing to change that. We need to disrupt the advertising-driven business models built on surveillance, profiling and maximising engagement. German state plans to criminalize questioning Israel’s right to exist (Anadolu Agency, 2026-04-22) https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/german-state-plans-to-criminalize-questioning-israel-s-right-to-exist/3915231 ——— >> Denying Israel’s right to exist could soon be punishable by law in the southern German state of Hesse, the Zeit weekly newspaper reported Wednesday. >> Hesse’s Prime Minister Boris Rhein and his Justice Minister Christian Heinz are planning to present a corresponding bill Thursday. >> The bill is then scheduled to be introduced in Germany’s upper house, the Bundesrat, on May 8... >> Critics of the bill say the move is aimed at stifling any kind of criticism of Israel. >> German law does not criminalize the act of questioning Israel's right to exist. While German authorities have severely restricted pro-Palestinian speech, the courts have recently clarified the limits of the restrictions, ruling that the speech is generally protected by freedom of expression… #FreedomOfExpression #Gaza #palestine #Germany @palestine@lemmy.ml @palestine@fedibird.com

Politicians are truly out of touch if they think that ordinary people can embed hidden messages in unicode with steganography. If they're worried over people mapping abstract cultural and political ideas to emotes, then they need to mind their own business and quit infringing upon their citizen's human rights. Specifically the right to freedom of speech. @caekislove@caekis.love Tags: #politics, #humanrights, #privacy, #freedomofexpression, #freedomofspeech.

“When you create a law, you have to think about what a future government could do with those powers." Ministers would have unilateral powers to lock what they see as 'harmful' behind digital ID checks. This could end up being used on LGBTQ+ and reproductive health content. 🗣️ ORG's James Baker. https://www.politico.eu/article/uk-eyes-sweeping-powers-to-regulate-tech-without-parliamentary-scrutiny/ #onlinesafety #digitalid #privacy #freedomofexpression #ageverification #ukpolitics #ukpol

🚨 ID checks to get online could become the new norm 🚨 A new amendment would give the UK government sweeping powers to block access to lawful information and communications. That's unless we submit our identification to a bounty of providers. Tell your MP to stop this broad and repressive law ⬇️ https://action.openrightsgroup.org/no-id-checks-web-access #privacy #freedomofexpression #ageverification #digitalID #onlinesafety #ukpolitics #ukpol
