Mass surveillance for advertising is just gross. I remember a comedian making a joke saying that ‘anyone here in advertising? Please kill yourself!’ Also just because someone got all the info on your for advertising, it doesn’t mean the government won’t get access to it, because right now 4th amendment and other traditional restrictions on government overreach are moot if all they need to do is buy the data from some broker on you. This has actually happened and it was upheld in court. The precedent for stuff like that is older than you think, but also not what you think. For example some serial killers and serial bank robbers were caught because some homeless person searched through their trash looking for something they can use, eat, or sell (all of these things are legal to do BTW) and they discover things like body parts, firearms, or brand new clothes that also fit the clothes that said criminal was wearing when they did their crimes, and said homeless people reported this to the police. But I am quite confident that someone who just so happens to stumble upon something vs. a company watching your every move are two very different things.

I tried to do it in the more advanced way, but I had never done anything like that before and I consider myself moderately technical. I used a simpler bootloader to get Frankel (the latest grapheneOS for Pixel 10. I have a basic Pixel 10, not the pro or fold) installed. I was apprehensive, but it seemed to go on fine. I am able to sandbox any google shit I do need (and it isn’t much) and I was able to get whatsapp with my old shit on it because my family is still using it for reasons. I am using K-9 as an email client for my gmail, which does help (or so I was told) limit the amount of information google gets on my usage when I check my email.

The one thing I realize about questions like this is that they are simply pointless. There is very little an ordinary individual can do to alter much. Even if you got taken back in time to the right time and place to make a change, what would that look like? People write stuff that predict the future all the time. Technofascist predictions about the internet being used by a few jackasses to monitor everyone and keep people under control have been written in the 90s, but no one listened at the time. Assassination? Good luck! Even if you got teleported back in time to 1997 and were armed with a gun and right outside a room with an unsuspecting Peter Thiel and Elon Musk (and maybe a few others) would blowing them away genuinely ‘solve’ the problems we have today? Or would it simply allow for another person to step in and do the same shit but just with a different name and face? Enriching yourself using well timed lottery numbers is practically the only thing that would make things better for you, but while that would mean you can relive those years in complete comfort (even luxury) if your objective is to change the world then it is a hollow one.

I once liked the idea of being part of some new age, neo pagan group and mindset and being ‘outside the mainstream’ but the more time passes the more I regress into a hole of solititude that no one can breach. The internet is self-censoring to the point of being incredibly stupid. Many youtubers cannot say simple shit like dead or killed or sexually assaulted/raped or suicide, instead opting for euphemisms like unalive/unalive oneself and saying acronyms like SAed. Even as a child I knew what rape and murder were. Terrible things yes, but they weren’t things that I couldn’t comprehending or was so terrified of that it would make me have a panic attack. It is like that time in the Real Ghostbusters cartoon (one of the latter seasosn I believe) where they stopped referring to the ghosts as ghosts but as monsters due to the fear that children would be sacred of the idea of a dead person’s spirit coming to haunt the living… I mean even as a kid I knew what a ghost was (they aren’t real, but I understood the concept).

I will be a happy man if they also lost all data and all chats permanently… meaning my chats are gone. Not that that I said anything embarrassing, but I like my privacy. If you want to know, some of the things I asked chatgpt were sarcastic questions like ‘why won’t Bill Gates buy me lunch?’ Or ‘how do you know i am not Jack the ripper?’ Or ‘write a scenario where Mr. Bean joins the bomb squad and is tasked with disarming a bomb left by thr unabomber?’

I think people don’t realize just how dangerous this shit is until they have been affected in some noticeable way, and even then they will not link just how the incredible amount of surveillance they are under every day is the cause of it. I worked in tech support for 7 years, and one thing that will never cease to astonish me is how tech illiterate people are. Do you have any idea how many people called me and demanded that I make modifications to their account and refused to tell me any verifying questions? While some might have been malicious actors , most aren’t. Most of them were genuinely expecting me to do everything for them and they wouldn’t even tell me what their name is. Some of them called me on a number not recognized by the system but they fully expected me to pull up their account (fucking how?) Without any information at all. When you have worked in this field long enough you will know why there is so little effective opposition to all this shit. It is not just because they dont give a damn if we are literally in a 1984 scenario with active cameras and microphones in people’s homes, but they just dont understand what that really means. Even younger people who grew up with these devices from early childhood don’t fully understand just how much they are being observed. If anything Gen Z and Gen Alpha are more fucked since they are the first generation of people whom the algorithms and data brokers have had some profile on since early childhood. As an elder millennial who grew up in a techie family with computers from childhood. I am fortunate in that they have nothing on me from early childhood to teen years. By the time I hit 20 the internet was still too chaotic and underdeveloped and algorithms weren’t the norm yet (and I was never a Google guy to begin with). But people born within the last 10 years can’t have that privilege.
