Game Camera Recommendation
Howdy folks,
I’m in search of a game cam type set up for monitoring chicken laying habits. Basically a motion activated camera that takes pictures or video when a chicken goes into a nesting box.
I’ve done some research, but it’s kind of a SEO shitshow on Google, with 10,000 different options. I want something real simple that just takes an SD card, no wireless network crap.
Ideally not crazy expensive.

What's your choice in Newcomb's problem?
Newcomb’s problem is a thought experiment where you’re presented with two boxes, and the option to take one or both. One box is transparent and always contains $1000. The second is a mystery box.
Before making the choice, a supercomputer (or team of psychologists, etc) predicted whether you would take one box or both. If it predicted you would take both, the mystery box is empty. If it predicted you’d take just the mystery box, then it contains $1,000,000. The predictor rarely makes mistakes.
This problem tends to split people 50-50 with each side thinking the answer is obvious.
An argument for two-boxing is that, once the prediction has been made, your choice no longer influences the outcome. The mystery box already has whatever it has, so there’s no reason to leave the $1000 sitting there.
An argument for one-boxing is that, statistically, one-boxers tend to walk away with more money than two-boxers. It’s unlikely that the computer guessed wrong, so rather than hoping that you can be the rare case where it did, you should assume that whatever you choose is what it predicted.

how to effectively poison telemetry collected by Meta?
Hello,
yes, I use Instagram even though I don’t like it because well all of my friends does and I can’t convince them to use something else. it’s really sad how hard it is to convince people to join open networks specially in fascist country like India where people are just boot lickers of politicians and rich people. but I digress.
I found the other day that google analytics can be easily tricked since it doesn’t verify the input. you can just open network tab and watch for any request going to www.google-analytics.com and just copy that request as curl command now you can tweak the parameters of the query and it will just accept it. ig, you can say I have 1920x1080 monitor and google will just accept it. it’s an effective way to fill up google analytics with garbage data to the point that it’s harder to separate real data from the garbage data.
now I want to know if there is something similar to poison data of Instagram/Facebook/Meta. I opened network tab on instagram.com but couldn’t find anything interesting.

Looking for device for Home Assistant
Hi everyone. I’m looking for a device to install Home Assistant on to manage a smart thermostat, a programmable light bulb (on and off), and another lamp in my house. Since I’ll be doing other work in the future, I want to use Home Assistant to be ready for the future.
That said, I’m looking for a device (a Mini PC, a Pi, etc.) that consumes very little power, as I’ll be using it exclusively for this purpose. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

What H11 low beam bulbs work best in a 2007 Tundra, and should I restore or replace the hazy headlights?
I need new low beam bulbs for my 2007 Toyota Tundra SR5 Double Cab 4.7L. Low beam is H11. No fog lights. I drive rural Maine roads so it is truly dark, but I am in town too. Oncoming headlights are brutal for my vision, so I care about clean beam pattern and glare control, not just something that looks bright.
My headlight lenses are hazed and yellow. I am leaning toward a restore kit, but I keep seeing advice to replace the whole headlight assemblies. I want to avoid cheap aftermarket housings that scatter light, leak, or haze again rapidly.
For anyone who has dealt with this, what H11 low beam bulb recommendations do you have that work well in the stock housings? Halogen options welcome. LED options only if they keep a clean pattern and do not throw glare everywhere.
And, should I restore, or do the full housing replacement? If you replaced, which brand was actually decent and held up through winter?
Beam pattern pics against a garage door or real road shots would be awesome!

If you started a job that was close to your hobby, has that diminished your love for it?
I’ve heard this before, but haven’t found it the case personally. I started work in manual jobs and messing around with computers was my evening hobby. Many years later, I now do IT as a job (partly from gaining skills from that hobby) but also have continued it as my primary thing to do when I’m not working. I was worried when I changed into this career that my hobby would become too much like work to be enjoyable, but I’ve not found that.
Is this the same for other people, or am I unusual in doing something in my off hours that’s so close to my career? I’m genuinely curious to know if others have found the same or whether they found another hobby.

Why do people at the bottle return act like they've never seen a aluminum can before?
In Michigan, we have a 10¢ deposit on cans and bottles. They’re refunded by feeding empties into a machine that counts them up. But there are never enough machines, so a line forms. And right now I’m watching 7 dopes inspect each container individually before feeding it into the machine.

What hill are you willing to die on even if no one in your life agrees with you?
Water usage is probably my biggest. Living in a high desert, my wife and MIL see no problem with filling one side of the sink with hot soapy water to wash a few dishes because “that’s just how I’ve always done it”, to watering the grass and plants for hours. All of this makes me mental.

I’m kind of sick of being a dev. I hate AI with a passion.
I hate the hallucinations, I hate slop, I hate megacrops, I hate the environmental impacts, I hate the massive costs. I could go on but you get the picture.
At work I often times have to review vibe code slop from people who clock in 9 to 5 and don’t give a fuck (I respect that, I just wish your fucking code wasn’t slop)

Can you recommend me a place to print Magic the Gathering cards?

I’m getting back into MtG - Really I never left, but all my friends who played have moved + I lost all my good decks in a move myself. Now some of my other friends have started playing, and though I hate universes beyond, I enjoy the game.
I don’t want to spend a bajillion on cards however, but I also don’t want to play with paper cutouts or proxies. It’s silly, but I like the cardboard for some reason. And I’d really like to regain some of my old decks, which were from Return to Ravnica/Original Innistraad era.
So I’m looking for a good printshop that prints good-looking Magic cards. I hear some shops in China have gotten better than WOTC at printing.
I’m in the EU.
Anyway, I’d love to get some recommendations. Please help me out.

What causes online communities to lose quality discussion as they grow?
I’ve noticed a pattern where once a subreddit or Lemmy community reaches a certain size, the front page becomes mostly memes, recycled jokes, and lowest common denominator content. Genuine discussion gets pushed out unless the community is extremely strictly moderated for it.
What do you think causes this shift? Is it inevitable with the upvote/downvote system rewarding quick, agreeable content over nuanced takes? Or are there platforms or moderation approaches that successfully scale discussion without turning into an echo chamber?

Better thermos than a Stanley?
I take a 2 hour commute to school every day. My Stanley thermos, which was gifted to me by my very consumerist aunt, doesn’t keep my moka pot coffee hot for 2 hours.
Although it is a pretty good thermos it seems to be leaking a lot of heat from the metal section near the cap.
Is there any thermos that has every section of it isolated? Like, I shouldn’t even be able to tell if there is a hot liquid inside

Why are marbles so expensive?
The used market is more interesting so I haunt estate auctions. I would like to make a paper holder for a specific space so I’m casually looking for a handful of marbles to sandwich between some pieces of hardwood to make it so.
Wow. An item I would expect to bid out at $2.50 or $5 goes past $50. Why? They’re just marbles. I’m old. I had a collection as a kid, but I’m not feeling any nostalgia for little glass balls.
Collecting things, knick-knacks and such, are down in price all around. People don’t have space, disposable income, or time for the Boomer hoarding nonsense, they just want the houses the stuff was stored in. And yet. Marbles are somehow an acceptable hoard and take up space item now. In fact, there seems to be a moral imperative to make it so. Why?

Well, maybe, but i’ve been thinking about turning tokens into words and all that fun stuff (disclaimer, i am against any kind of llm and the similar misuses of that technology) and most importantly, about how directions in this high dimensional space seem to encode true semantical dimensions.
Like how king + woman - man = king + "vector direction associated with feminity = queen (higly simplified)
This brought me to the realization that all languages have a measurable (maybe not exact but at least rough estimate) number of semantic dimensions they have (usually way lower than the number of words in said language).
Which then made me wonder :
-> How few semantic dimensions do you need for a functionnal conlang ? (i imagine it would be two (binary) but i would be happy to hear your counterpoints)
-> how many words per semantic dimensions do you need to get by and is there a reason why human language have so much “redundancy” (why not have “word for magnitude + word for semantic direction” ad nauseam ?)
And last but not least, can you make a language with 3 dimensions and speak in rgb colours ?

Is asking for letters with your name and address as verification outdated?
I had to update my address on my driver’s license and they needed a couple pieces of mail with my new address and name on it to verify but I hadn’t gotten any mail at the new place yet.
Then I started thinking about it more and realized I haven’t actually received a letter addressed specifically to me in over a year, possibly in over 3 years. I have everything set to send by email because it isn’t 1950 anymore. Am I just a loser with no corporate pen pals or is physical mail an antiquated form of address verification now?

Is it now less morally dubious to work for a U.S "Defense" Contractor?
Recently we’ve learned that the F35 is a 1T Dollar mess with no radar, and that the capabilities of anti ballistic systems were grossly overstated so it’s worth asking if there’s as much of a moral quandary with working in american defense given that most of the big name equipment does nothing.
Admittedly somewhat of a joke post but in my industry, there are some heavy incentives to work for a “defense” contractor only ignored by those with a moral compass.
I’m half considering setting up a “defense company” that does absolutely nothing, maybe we can sell MRE’s that spoil or grenades that explode with confetti.

Grammar-to-content discrepancy: AI-generated text grammar shows no obvious flaws, however it they may fail to demonstrate actual expertise of the topic. A reader can get the impression of the text saying a lot of things but containing little substance.
Overall, AI-generated text has some characteristics that a reader can notice. They tend to be structured in a consistent manner and in a diplomatic tone, but can appear to them as lacking in insights.

Wanted to make post on a site, preferably anonymous were maga or conservatives hang out at.
I remember going into r/conservatives and getting booted for being liberal or whatever, found it funny that they needed Reddit platform not majority of redditors). Also I got my ass band from r/actual public freakout for basically pointing out how people were being racist to a girl that got ran into by a car going in reverse

About MWM
Hello there. It’s nice to meet you all.
Some months ago, I did research on the A’C’P. It’s quite horrifying that many people cannot see the evident psyop they are. I wouldn’t be surprised if they clap whenever Hammoud or Hinkle publicly give a reactionary statement.
What I am interested in is the Midwestern Marx Institute. I know many notorious members are part of that nazbol abomination, but I haven’t read much about them.
From what I’ve seen, people like Carlos Garrido behave similarly to Jackson Hinkle when he goes abroad. They pretend to be internationalists/anti-imperialists, but they behave in the exact opposite way in the US.
I’ll be looking forward to your answers.

Is not being allowed to go home during bomb threat and instead being sent temporarily to a shelter normal or am i making this a big deal?
At work when management said due to iranian drone strikes and sirens we are supposed to go to bomb shelter rather than straight home, in the beginning of this conflict they said we are allowed to work from home later they said work from home is no longer allowed , when i said to my dad it’s unfair that we are not allowed to go home, he said
they aren’t paying you for free, others are also in similar condition what’s the big deal?
is that right or wrong? Or am i just over reacting

Would this be mixed race or ethnicity? I'm trying to understand the nuance difference
Not that it matters, mostly, but I do want to get the words right. So we are reading a book on someone who is mixed Native American Ojibwe and white.
Some people in my class, let’s say, are Indian (from India) and white. We agreed that would be mixed, but for example, someone who is English and Swedish would not be because they are just white.
Would they not be mixed race, mixed ethnicity, or be neither?
