Has anyone tried putting Linux on a Snapdragon X Windows tablet?

I am once again asking for advice on running Linux on tablets. Apparently x86 tablets are just not a thing anymore, even Windows tablets all seem to use the Snapdragon X ARM processors, like the newer Surfaces and the Asus ProArt tablet. Has anyone had experience running Linux on those? If a distro has an arm64 version can I expect to just boot it, or are they more like Android tablets where even if you manage to boot Linux you can expect pretty much nothing to work? Touchscreen support is the biggest thing for me, as I definitely plan on using it primarily as a tablet and not a laptop. Active stylus support with palm rejection would be a bonus but not a priority for me.

Interestingly I’ve gotten the 70B local Deepseek model to say it’s Claude as well. IDK if it’s indicative of distillation though (how do you distill a closed model?) And why would them receiving prompt responses from Claude also carry the name over? From my uneducated guess it’s probably more of an indication that LLMs don’t actually know anything and the information they’re trained on mentions every AI model so they just randomly “pick” what they think they are if you don’t tell them.

From my “watched a YouTube video” understanding of Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem, a consistent mathematical system cannot prove its own consistency, and any seemingly consistent system could always have a fatal contradiction that invalidates the whole system, and the only way to know would be to find the contradiction. So if at some point our current system of math gets proven inconsistent, what happens next? Can we tweak just the inconsistent part and have everything else still be valid or would we be forced to rebuild all of math from basic logic?

EVs yes since they’re huge and hard to ship, phones maybe since they can block them at the network level, but I can’t see how they can effectively ban small peripherals like SSDs and RAM. They can try, but there are already enough packages being intentionally mislabeled by Chinese sellers to get through customs, though usually to avoid delays or import taxes the buyer has to pay as opposed to circumventing an outright ban. Especially if you intend on running Linux on it which won’t entertain any kind of approved vendor bullshit they might force Windows to implement.

As a rule of thumb, don’t trust the packaging when it’s trying to assure you it won’t cause some negative side effect. They have a massive conflict of interest because they want you to buy it, and more importantly they legally don’t have to actually prove it’s factual, the burden is on you the consumer to sue them and prove they’re lying in court if you think that’s the case, and they’re well aware the vast majority of people don’t have the time or resources to do that.

Do you think Chinese companies will pick up the slack when it comes to consumer RAM and SSDs?

I personally never really considered “Chinese knockoff” a negative term because those products still fill a niche that is beneficial to the consumer, usually very low cost entry level offerings the “brand name” companies don’t bother making. Now that the “brand names” have straight up said they don’t intend on making entire categories of consumer products anymore, this could be a great opportunity for Chinese companies. There’s a stereotype of Chinese brands being “low quality” which obviously isn’t always true to begin with, but even if we assume it is, given the choice between a maybe lower quality product you still get to own and none at all, I think the decision is pretty clear, at least for me. With shortages of things like GPUs, third party Chinese manufacturers can’t easily jump in to fill the gap because those chips are complex and proprietary both in the silicon design and the interfaces/APIs they need to work with, so the barrier to entry is quite high. Even if they straight up reverse engineered and “stole” Nividia’s designs (which I personally don’t even consider unethical), they’ll have a hard time legally selling them in Western markets because Nividia will sue them. But DRAM and SSDs are much simpler and there are already Chinese offerings of both on places like Aliexpress and even Amazon (not just using brand name chips on their own board, though that’s still more common, I’m certain there are also in-house Chinese DRAM and flash chips from small firms), I don’t see a reason they can’t just ramp up production and cash in on the shortage in the West. But there could still be details I’m not aware of. All they have to do is offer something reasonably reliable and leas expensive than the ridiculous prices “brand name” parts are going for and I can’t imagine them not getting customers looking to build custom PCs for cheap. Again, I personally don’t give a shit if they “stole” designs from the brand names or not, because I consider stealing intellectual property from billion dollar corporations to be morally neutral. So, people more knowledgeable on how electronics manufacturing and supply chains work, do you think we’ll see Chinese brands becoming more prominent in the Western consumer computer parts market now that the likes of Samsung, SKHynix, and Micron straight up don’t even want to sell to consumers anymore?

My dog chewed a plastic bag containing the special proprietary cables for a computer display/input switch. I think she just wanted the bag and the cable was collateral damage, because she’s never chewed cables on their own before or since. They refuse to sell the cables separately so it made the device itself useless unless I buy another one for like $100. Ended up not bothering and giving up on having a peripheral switch because I refuse to spend that much money again just because a $10 cable broke, I just manually switch the actual display and USB cables when I want to control another computer.

Induced demand also applies to social media. Having a dedicated community for something can cause people who had not thought to post something (because there was no dedicated community for it and they don’t want to risk putting it in a community where it doesn’t fit) to post. Related, I really think we could use a /c/whatever community, for creative works and posts that don’t fit into any existing communities. It will also serve as a good place to assess when a community should be created, since you can just see what a lot of people are posting.

Sealed in batteries on smartphones and Surface tablets. The device will eventually reach a point where it won’t even boot when plugged in because the charger connection isn’t actually wired to power the main board without going through the battery first (most smartphones) or the device consumes more power than the port can deliver (Surface).

Thoughts on putting down elderly pets?

I am once again dumping my raw thoughts on the Lemmy and asking your opinion on them. My first dog (and pet in general) is nowhere near the age of me needing to think about putting her down, but having a dog has introduced me to the world of opinions on whether they should be put down when they get too old. I’ve read a lot of very strong pro-euthanasia pet owner opinions, even going as far as accusing people refusing to put down their pets as “cruel” or actively wanting their pets to suffer. It really seems like a majority of pet owners, at least in the English speaking world, think putting their pets down is something you should always do when their bodies deteriorate past a certain point, and every time this is brought up you get a lot of emotional comments shaming anyone who doesn’t subscribe to that philosophy. The core argument being made seems to be that when their health conditions pile up past a point, it’s not “worth” letting the pet live anymore, supposedly for their sake. But when I think about it further, I ask how can you be sure? All animals want to keep living, that’s literally why animals evolved brains in the first place, to keep their bodies alive for as long as possible. How can you, who is not the pet, say for sure they would prefer to die than keep living? You can’t ask them, and you can’t get in their mind to determine how much they still appreciate being alive. Even the oldest, sickest pet will still make an effort to keep themselves alive however they can: eating, drinking water, moving out of the way of danger, etc. As far as I know, no animal (at least the animals we keep as pets) have an instinct to just give up and stop going through the motions of life past a certain age. Doesn’t that imply they always want to live? I consider the decision to no longer live past a certain age and certain number of health problems to be a uniquely human thing, and it doesn’t feel right to impose that on a pet who probably doesn’t have those thoughts. Even with humans, we refrain from making that decision for them. Someone who’s in a coma isn’t eligible for euthanasia just because they haven’t expressed a desire to live, and the most their family can legally do is to stop actively keeping them alive with technology and let them die naturally. But if they don’t die right after taking them off life support, you can’t just straight up kill them, they need to die by themselves. Why isn’t this philosophy applied to pets, who can never consent to euthanasia? You don’t have to keep subjecting your pet to more and more invasive treatments just to extend their lives by a small amount, but at the same time, what gives you the moral right to unilaterally decide when they’re done with living? Why is letting your pet die naturally in the comfort of their own home seen as cruel, while choosing for them when they should die is considered humane? What do you think? I genuinely don’t know how I feel about this but want to understand the problem and where I stand on it before my dog gets old enough for these things to apply.

My university chose to teach a lisp-like language without for loops as they very first programming course in the computer science program lol. Everyone who “already knew” how to program hated it (including me at the time) because it knocked us from the peak of the Dunning-Kruger curve into the valley of despair like everyone else.

I need something I can easily instruct them on how to install, and has good cross-platform support so that a basic programming lesson will work on whatever OS the attendees are running. Remember they are non-technical so may need more guidance on installation, so it should be something that is easy to explain. Honestly, as much as I personally despise it as a language and as much as you probably shouldn’t use it for large applications, JavaScript. Every mainstream OS runs JavaScript, and it’s already pre-installed in the form of a web browser. On any desktop system (and even mobile systems with some effort) you can use any text editor to write an HTML file with inline JavaScript and run it by just clicking it. Python, the next best option IMO, still requires knowledge of how to use the command line, and on Windows, requires installation that is slightly more involved than installing a regular program (adding it to your PATH, etc). Python for beginners are also limited mostly to console apps, and making a GUI is much more difficult especially for new programmers. Again, you’d first have to teach them what a console even is and how it’s actually still used by developers and is not a relic of the DOS days (something I’ve noticed non technical people tend to assume, they think GUIs made consoles obsolete). JS on the other hand is literally made to create GUIs on the web, meaning they will be able to create the kinds of software they’re already used to interacting with, which is both easier for them to wrap their minds around and also more enticing. Someone with no technical experience might wrongly assume that a text only interface is like “training wheels” and what they’re learning doesn’t apply to “real” software. More importantly, they will be able to show off what they built to their friends, without needing them to install anything or send source code or executables which can get blocked by social media filters. Services like Netlify will host your static pages for free, making sharing their work as simple as posting a link. Having a GUI is even more important so they don’t have to walk their friends through how to use a console app when they barely understand it themselves. JS in the browser also has the benefit of being in a sandbox, meaning they can’t easily interact with other parts of their computer like files or system configurations. This may seem like a disadvantage but for someone just learning what programming is, it’s reassuring that they can’t accidentally kill their OS or delete their files.

The writers, actors, film crew, editors, etc are paid a flat rate that’s probably far less than what they deserve and the company itself gets the actual royalties. The only protest that intentionally blocked emergency services I can think of was the antivaxxer “freedom convoy” protests. But when you ask a random lib to think of a protest blocking emergency services they’ll blurt out something about climate/workers/BLM/Palestine/etc. Talk about the freedom convoy and they’ll get holier than thou about how unfairly those widdle science denwying fwascists got treated by the police when any Leftist protest was treated 100x worse.

Don’t blindly accept “he did it/she did it” when one of them messes up. It shows them that, for one, their siblings are fall-persons that can be framed to avoid punishment, and potentially, that one of them is presumed the troublemaker if you’re more inclined to blame them in the absense of evidence. Also don’t punish both for something unless you have proof they both did it. That’s how you make them resent each other. Give each of them autonomy from their siblings and allow them to do their own things by themselves. Don’t force them to let their sibling tag along when they clearly don’t want to. I’m not a parent either but these seem to be the most common complaints I’ve read from people with siblings.

I want to stab whoever thought this was good enough Eh, they probably outsourced it to some firm that’s paying the devs McDonald’s wages at best. I wouldn’t try that hard either.

I personally like to minimize name changes as much as possible because usually, the current name Just Works and I don’t really think it’s worth it to break muscle memory or replace signage and stuff.

Companies tend to change names to try and get away from their history. Like how Philip Morris became Altria. Don’t let them. There’s no such thing as deadnaming a company because it was never alive in the first place. If their old name carries the baggage of how horrible they really are, keep using it and don’t let them forget.
