What's your choice in Newcomb's problem?

Newcomb’s problem is a thought experiment where you’re presented with two boxes, and the option to take one or both. One box is transparent and always contains $1000. The second is a mystery box. Before making the choice, a supercomputer (or team of psychologists, etc) predicted whether you would take one box or both. If it predicted you would take both, the mystery box is empty. If it predicted you’d take just the mystery box, then it contains $1,000,000. The predictor rarely makes mistakes. This problem tends to split people 50-50 with each side thinking the answer is obvious. An argument for two-boxing is that, once the prediction has been made, your choice no longer influences the outcome. The mystery box already has whatever it has, so there’s no reason to leave the $1000 sitting there. An argument for one-boxing is that, statistically, one-boxers tend to walk away with more money than two-boxers. It’s unlikely that the computer guessed wrong, so rather than hoping that you can be the rare case where it did, you should assume that whatever you choose is what it predicted.

The “resource curse” is just people trying to pretend imperialism isn’t responsible. Norway has plenty of oil reserves and they have a high quality of life, because nobody invaded them. Plenty of these countries had leaders who wanted to use their resources to help the people, but the powers that be, most often the US, didn’t want that. And so for example Mohammed Mossadegh of Iran, a peaceful, democratically elected progressive, was overthrown by the CIA, and he was replaced by a monarch who could be easily bribed and would use the oil to enrich himself. And when that monarch caved to domestic pressure and participated in an oil embargo, US support was withdrawn and he was overthrown and the current government came to power. There’s no “mystery” or “curse.” It’s just imperialism. The story generally goes that these resources were stolen by force during colonialism and remained in foreign hands after independence and the country still functions as a neocolony, leading to poverty and exploitation, or war and instability if they challenge it.

Who is this they you are talking about? Your fucking government, dumbass. The EU. The people implementing the policy in question. I know y’all act like any criticism of the Israeli government is antisemitic, but does that protection now extend to any criticism of the EU? I think not having ties with Russian state propaganda for living normally is a risk I’m willing to take, as its no effort for me. Nothing to hide so you have nothing to fear, eh? Yeah, millions of Americans were fine with our government using extralegal punishments and detentions because they thought it would be limited to terrorists. Now we’re being dragged away to secret torture dungeons in El Salvador. But fortunately, I’m sure that nothing bad will come of European governments having the tools to punish people without charge or trial. I mean, honestly, what do you even need rights for? Just trust the people in charge to sort out the good guys and the bad guys. Say, unrelated, but how’s the AFD doing these days? And, purely hypothetically, if they got into government, how would you feel about them having a precedent that would allow them to apply these punishments to anyone they consider to have engaged in wrongthink? All these other speculations you’re pointing to you would have to prove to me first. What speculations would I have to prove? That domestic polls are unreliable? I’ve seen a lot of people dismiss domestic polls in China that show overwhelming support for the government as unreliable. I’ve never seen one of them feel the need to prove it, or present a shred of evidence. In fact, when outside polls have confirmed those results, they just say that they’re all “brainwashed” or “propagandized.” Not quite as fun when it’s your people’s perspective that’s being written off, is it?

while I don’t approve of the method Is it safe for you to say this? If you say something they don’t like, they could do the same to you, no charge, no trial. And criticizing that practice might be something they don’t like, even if not today, then maybe tomorrow. You’re probably fine for now because you justified the actions by attacking the victim, but this might be as critical as you’re allowed to be. I think we need to start getting some reliable, neutral outside polls on Europe to see how they really feel about their governments. Maybe we can bring in some Chinese pollsters. Obviously anyone voicing approval in domestic polls is just afraid of the repercussions of voicing a negative opinion.

“Their own interests” whose interests, exactly? Who benefitted, and who paid the costs, for the wars in the Middle East? The only people who benefitted seem to be oil companies and war profiteers, while ordinary people (including my own family) paid for it in both money and blood. The interests of your own country’s bourgeoisie might align sometimes with those of the American bourgeoisie, but neither align with your people or the American people.

So many of these people will play this little game where they pretend to be reluctant, like they care just as much as we do, but as much as it tears them up inside, they’ll make the “rational” choice for the “lesser genocide.” Then, as soon as the leftists were out of the room, they dropped the facade and started talking about how great and wonderful Harris is and how they couldn’t think of a single reason to dislike her. This wasn’t the only post like that that got 1000+ upvotes, despite Lemmy being full of “reluctant” Harris voters. A part of me wishes they’d just tell us straight up that they don’t give a shit.

How do modern social democrats understand and answer the failure of the Second International?

I’m aware that in many cases the answer is simply, “they don’t,” as many people don’t seem to have the historical or theoretical curiosity to investigate it. However, I genuinely want to encourage more cerebral discussion around here, so I’ll give a brief rundown. The Second International was a big federation of socialists/social democrats with lots of different perspectives, the largest being Germany’s SDP (which still exists today). The aim was to foster international cooperation and solidarity, and to promote the interests of the common people, including preventing the outbreak of a major European war. The Basel Manifesto, passed by a unanimous vote at the International Socialist Congress in 1912, stated: If a war threatens to break out, it is the duty of the working classes and their parliamentary representatives in the countries involved supported by the coordinating activity of the International Socialist Bureau to exert every effort in order to prevent the outbreak of war by the means they consider most effective, which naturally vary according to the sharpening of the class struggle and the sharpening of the general political situation. In case war should break out anyway it is their duty to intervene in favor of its speedy termination and with all their powers to utilize the economic and political crisis created by the war to arouse the people and thereby to hasten the downfall of capitalist class rule. The Second International fell apart when the SDP voted in favor of issuing war credits, indicating support for German entry into WWI, with other social democratic parties following suit. This made any hope of international cooperation impossible. Although everyone said that they opposed the war in principle, they all found reasons to rally around their respective flags and point fingers at each other for who’s side was more responsible. Lenin was an exception to this trend and not only strongly opposed Russian participation in the war, but even went so far as to explictly call for Russia’s defeat. The Leninist perspective is that the social democratic parties betrayed the international socialist movement and failed to oppose the war because had become filled with opportunists, people who were willing to go against the interests of the people out of fear of political persecution (or, in the interest of advancing their own careers) and that, from this, we can see that attempts to work within the system to achieve reform are vulnerable such mechanisms of subversion. The breakdown of the Second International was not just a disagreement between social democrats and Leninists, but also between social democrats of different countries. When their respective countries turned against each other, and the range of acceptable opinions narrowed to the point that opposing the war would be seen as treasonous, they all found reasons to start fighting each other, in a largely pointless war on an unprecedented scale. Is it really possible to build any sort of international coalition if a party limits itself to the range of opinions that are permissible within a capitalist system? And are modern social democrats even interested in that sort of internationalism anymore?

The thing is that the rebels were (mostly) white, and removing the racial lens allowed Americans to see that a struggle like that of colonized people against their oppressors was obviously correct. But it also means they can’t connect the rebels to real world conflicts, because the oppressed people are generally not white, and so it’s understood through a racial lens.

Has the "worst person you know" ever actually made a GREAT point?

We all know the meme, but most of the time it’s referenced about someone shitty saying something you already agree with. What I wanna hear about is a time when someone who you broadly disagree with actually gave you some kind of new insight about something - even if you didn’t end up coming around to their point of view. Maybe they gave you a piece of a puzzle that you were missing, but then you built on that in a completely different way. Doesn’t have to actually be “the worst person you know,” interpret it however you like.
