@rasterweb@mastodon.social Pete, #baking #bread must be some sort of weird science. My wife has been baking it for years, and just recently figured out how to get her baguettes and Italian bread to have a harder crispy crust with soft insides. I do not know details, but it somehow involves putting a cookie sheet full of water under the bread while baking to replicate the Syracuse, NY Italian bakery bread she grew up on. Just keep plugging away b/c even the mistakes are usually highly edible.

Man, the gaslighting is on steroids coming out of the Big Orange gang.

Today is the 10-year anniversary of keyboardist Keith Emerson's death. I consider myself lucky to have seen ELP at Selland Arena in Fresno when they were touring Brain Salad Surgery.
While many protégée kids can knock out Vivaldi at 8YO, Emerson could slay on his Hammond organ with his left hand and simultaneously blow the entire world's musical minds on his Moog synthesizer with his right hand. His skills were SUPERHUMAN!

One of the 410 sprint car drivers I follow closely is Tanner Holmes out of Jacksonville, Oregon.
What makes him interesting to me is that he is only in his early 20s, and leverages social media big time, which plays well when in talks with potential sponsors.
Here I show he received 541 "Likes" on a Facebook post up for only one hour today. And over on UToob, he has 86,500 followers and has posted 1,700 videos.
He works it hard all season. But he always deep dives into the weeds to inform us.

Haven't had my #XPlane #flightsim #Cirrus SF50 Vision jet up in a while. It was in for maintenance (in-op thingamabob).
Flew into Pangborn Memorial in Wenatchee, WA (KEAT) and after seeing the identifier, somehow I am hungry for dessert. Surely I can find some decent fresh Apple Pie around here.
RNAV approach was fun, a tricky five-turn affair thru a small valley of the Columbia River.
Parked next to another SF50 and yes, I do have wingtip envy.

Cue the whales:
After DJI futures were down last night over 1,000 points, it opened sluggish today and was poking along about down -300 points all session.
Then, almost on cue, the word went out to the billionaire whales that Big Orange was not amused with the markets today. A tidal wave of cash entered the market, and poof, giant green candles to end the session up 239 points.
All it takes is a few billionaires throwing big buy orders at everything and the prices skyrocket.

I am amazed at the stuff you learn when you read #books. #Reading opens the mind to new possibilities, and loads up my brain with new and interesting information.
I am just getting into Rinker Buck's "Oregon Trail" where he and a brother drive a three-mule team and covered wagon the 2,000 miles of the Oregon Trail in 1989.
Tonight I learned 10,000% more about MULES than I had even known before. Strong "Missouri Mules" were apparently the Cadillac of towing animals in the 'Overland' Days.

Recently, a family member used ChatGPT to explain a rare condition someone we know has developed. She was trying to sort out ambiguities between first and second opinion doctors.
What it returned was, according to the patient, very accurate. Maybe the latest version is not so evil after all?
Gave it my usual test prompt of "Show me a photo of Jesus riding on top of a Cessna 172 airplane."
Usually all AI tools botch this big time. ChatGPT did however nail it.

Turns out this is a terrible time to visit the William Finlay Wildlife Refuge between Eugene and Corvallis #Oregon if you want to see wildlife. Much of the refuge is closed to the public for birds to "winter over" but we saw only a few birds, and a small herd of Elk crossing a marsh.
Still, nice walk in clean air, day was a win.

Greenpeace has an interactive map up of all the oil tankers trapped in the Strait of Hormuz.
The four red dots signify oil spills. So along with jacking the price of oil worldwide, looks like Big Orange's aggression is also probably going to foul the sea in that part of the world.
I am fresh out of words to describe this level of chaos fuckery. The usual words like deplorable, disgusting, corrupt and horrific we've used for ten years are no longer sufficient.

Just saw this on the Book of Faces and it hits home.
The meme is correct in that as we age, we care less about being cool, or basically what anyone else thinks of us. Once you hit retirement, feel free to dress as you please, wear your hair or beard long, pierce assorted parts of your body, get a tattoo on your forehead.
Quite possibly, It is only when you stop worrying about being cool that you actually become cool.

Put in a full day with four people working on my fallen tree pile with a rented 30-ton log splitter. Three pickup loads and we are half way thru this project. Both my neighbor (we share the trees) and I are fast running out of wood storage space, so what we cannot stack, I'm going to try and give away on FB Marketplace.
Splitting huge rounds is hard work. But I am mildly pleased I did not wreck anything on my body, especially my back. Just went slow and careful to "git 'er done."

It's awesome to have the right tools:
Rented a mondo log splitter for the weekend to start cleaning up the MANY rounds in my front yard from the trees that came down in our last windstorm.
Picked up today, and split 3/4 of a cord of old (and VERY hard) cherry rounds I have been sitting on for years.
This thing is permanently in #BeastMode. 30 tons of pressure goes thru logs (even with yuge knots) like a hot knife through butter.
$61 for the weekend (my half split with my neighbor). #Value

I picked up that and have been known to buy some of those Guerrero white corn tortillas and wrap all sorts of stuff in them. You can make a pretty decent taco with just cheese, lettuce, onions and some Pico Pica.

Crews are constantly painting the Golden Gate Bridge due to the harsh sea air that hits it 24/7. But by the time they get to the far end, the other end needs painting, so they're never done.
Same with me, only it's #dusting.

I got lucky today asking a drainage contractor to come out and quote this problem of downhill water flooding my garage/shop during very heavy rainstorms.
Daylight Drainage in Springfield came right out, dude was young, knowledgable, and believable. His many reviews on Google are all 5 stars. His communications game is first-class, something very important to us as professional communicators.
This will make up for all the times contractors either didn't show, or tried to deceive and upsell us.

If you're on the Book of Faces and want to get a really good look at how squirrely 410 sprint cars are to drive, watch this reel. It is onboard from a "non-wing" USAC car, so they jump around more than the winged cars.

Today's entry is "Snowicane" which is poised to hit the I-95 corridor soon.
Next up Windpel, (wind + graupel), Hailnado (hail whipped into a spinning storm), Rainsheer (rain going sideways), Nor'CumuloICEaster (big honkin' clouds that are very cold and comes out of the Northeast), and finally, Fog (yeah, just Fog, because that the hell can you do, it's just Fog...).

Hey all, has anyone here had any experience with using larger gas-powered log splitters? I am renting one like this shown next weekend to start cleaning up the huge mess of Douglas Fir rounds in my front yard from the last wind storm.
Seems pretty straightforward, but I could use any tips/tricks you have if you've used one of these.
Was thinking it would be hard to back up, but it looks small enough to just unhitch and push around.

Went in there with a horrible nosebleed once (I mean a gusher) and literally thought I was going to bleed out. They were all "sit and wait" so I removed the towel from my face, bled on their floor, and they took me right in.

You want Big Hospital drama? We got it here in #Eugene.
The suits at our big hospital, Peacehealth Sacred Heart, has decided to gut their Emergency Department, and has subcontracted the staffing of 45 Physicians to some third-party group in Atlanta.
Apparently the current ER docs are bailing, and the staff held an "All-Hands" meeting this past week, and gave a 100% unanimous vote of "No Confidence" to the management there.
I sometimes wish the suits would just stay out at the Country Club.

Tonight was again Pizza Night at the Casa. As per usual, used wife's homemade sauce, red bells, Walla Walla onion, fungi, whole milk mozzy and Parmasano Reggiano.
But what ROCKED this time was the crust. Wife used real Italian "Tipo 00" flour from Italy, and dough balls were the best I've worked with. Crust was chewy on the inside, crusty on the bottom.
As you can see, I am still working on the round shape. This unusual shape did however taste as good as a perfectly round pie.

I believe email is the ugly stepchild of the Internet. It has always sucked, been glitchy, and had so much spam, cons and fake offers, it is a joke to use.
Now, the gremlins running "Big Email" somehow think I sell mailing lists, because all of the sudden I am getting 5-10 requests a DAY to sell mailing lists. But the "from" addresses do not jive with the signature, so it is just another obvious scam.
This all started with AOL's "You've Got Mail!" chime back in the day.

Here’s a tip from my 38 years of happy marriage (including about 28 years working closely together in our businesses):
Marriage bliss is achievable by following the Golden Rule, it is that simple. If you are a dude, treat your wife like you like to be treated in everything large and small. Same goes for women about their husbands, just “Do unto others as you wish done unto you.”

I once was on my way to Oshkosh, flew into like F26, outbound to Appleton was F27, I was floored, thinking I did not have to do the usual O’hare sprint thru three terminals to my gate. But of course, Appleton was delayed 2.0 hours due to WX, or maintenance, or the excuse du jour. I hate going thru KORD.
