Too much snow or hoping for more? Two different winters hit the US

So far this season, millions in the Northeast have endured rounds of frigid temperatures and mounds of snow. But a different winter has played out across much of the West. High temperatures and a lack of snow have been feeding a drought there, impacting ski resorts and fueling water shortage concerns.

Drought in Türkiye’s Iznik Lake reveals possible second submerged basilica

A drop in water levels caused by worsening drought in Iznik (ancient Nicaea), Bursa, northwestern Türkiye, has brought new archaeological remains to the surface in Lake Iznik, where drone footage has revealed what experts believe could be a second submerged basilica close to the shoreline.

Colorado River may deliver just a third of normal water supplies this spring, projections show

Modeling released late last week showed the river system on track to deliver a scant 2.3 million acre-feet to Lake Powell, one of the river system’s largest reservoirs. That’s 36% of the median of 6.4 million acre-feet recorded between 1991 and 2020. If the forecast comes true, it would be the fifth-lowest inflow to Lake Powell since the reservoir’s establishment in 1963, according to the National Weather Service’s Colorado Basin River Forecast Center.

Heat waves that spark damaging droughts are happening more frequently, study finds

Researchers from South Korea and Australia looked at compound extreme weather — a one-two punch of heat and drought — and found it increasing as the world warms. But what’s rising especially fast is the more damaging type when the heat comes first and that triggers the drought. In the 1980s, that kind of extreme covered only about 2.5% of Earth’s land each year. By 2023, the last year the researchers studied, it was up to 16.7%, with a 10-year average of 7.9%

Colorado's snowpack woes continue despite recent storms

The West was still on track to see a record low snowpack season in the Rockies. Colorado snowpack was hovering at about 62% of normal entering March after a warm, dry winter.

Denver Water said that as of March 2, the Colorado River snowpack ranked the second worst since tracking started decades ago.

Belize Discovery Shows How Maya Engineered Wetlands to Survive Drought

A Maya wetlands settlement in northwestern Belize was discovered and studied. Archaeologists and geographers report that this community transformed a challenging tropical wetland into a productive and enduring home.

The people constructed an extensive network of canals, raised agricultural fields, and modified land surfaces. The findings indicate that the area was not marginal land but a carefully engineered landscape designed to manage water and sustain farming during unstable climate periods.

With spring planting to begin soon, more moisture is needed for crop germination.

Winds Whip Up Fires and Dust on the Southern Plains

High winds coupled with dry conditions fueled fast-spreading wildland fires in the U.S. southern Plains in winter 2026. On February 17, several large blazes broke out on the Oklahoma Panhandle and burned quickly through tens of thousands of acres of grasslands and shrublands. The winds also caused dust storms and low visibility throughout the wider region.

Scientists change how El Nino is labeled to keep up with spike in temperature

Increasingly hot waters globally have caused the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration this month to alter how it calculates when the weather pattern has flipped into a new cycle. It’s likely to mean that more events will be considered La Nina and fewer qualify as an El Nino for warming tropical waters.

Low river levels expose ancient Amazon face engravings

Ancient face engravings along Brazil’s Negro River have resurfaced after record low water exposed a protected rock art site unseen for years.

Their return has changed an environmental crisis into a moment of discovery, drawing urgent attention to fragile traces of the region’s earliest inhabitants.

On the U.S. Drought Monitor, drought expanded significantly in Montana and Wyoming and eased in the Midwest and small pockets in the West. Drought covered 48.58% of the contiguous US, an increase of 1.98 points. In many areas, farmers are anxious about soil moisture as planting nears.

Parched Florida now most drought-stricken state and is feeling effects

Water managers have already issued enhanced restrictions in some areas — voluntary and those that threaten fines for a violation — and are preparing more extreme measures such as installing pumps to suck water from Lake Okeechobee if levels dwindle to the point that gravity is no longer enough to fill canals that carve through South Florida like veins.

Dramatic changes in upper atmosphere are responsible for recent droughts and bushfires: new research

Eight to ten kilometres above the ground, the fast-flowing jet stream air currents have shifted further southwards, dragging rain-bearing winter weather systems away from Australia’s southern coastline.

This means southern Australia has experienced at least 25% less annual rainfall and is currently gripped by a continuing drought.

Florida bees in crisis after freeze and drought devastate colonies

Nearly half the honeybee colonies at a Central Florida farm died this winter after an unusually sharp freeze and months of drought crippled the plants bees depend on — a blow beekeepers say they’ve never seen at this scale.

At Black Hammock Bee Farms in Oviedo, head beekeeper said the damage was immediate and overwhelming. The sudden cold killed off flowers and trees that produce nectar and pollen, leaving entire colonies without their natural food supply.

Interior Department moves forward on guidelines for Colorado River absent full state consensus

The Department of the Interior is moving forward with the Post-2026 NEPA process to finalize operating guidelines for Colorado River reservoirs by Oct. 1, 2026. While the seven Basin States have not reached full consensus on an operating framework, the Department cannot delay action. Meeting this deadline is essential to ensure certainty and stability for the Colorado River system beyond 2026.

Lake Powell sinking toward record low as states miss deadline for Colorado River drought deal

For the first time, the Bureau of Reclamation’s most probable forecast shows that Lake Powell could fall below 3,490 feet in elevation in December of this year. Below that elevation, the turbines in Glen Canyon Dam would be unable to generate electricity that keeps the lights on in Utah and six other states.
