I considered becoming an apprentice machinist.
Everyone wanted 2-5 years of experience, FOR A FUCKING APPRENTICE. The starting pay was basically $20 an hour, which in Seattle is "we would pay you less but we legally cannot do so" wages.
I did find a place willing to do $29/hr and train from scratch, but they wanted 80+ hours a week of work. Plus looking online I found accusations of wage theft. Hard pass.
Every shop pays women and trans people like dogshit compared to the men. Every single trans person and every single woman I know who's worked in the trades here has complained of a MASSIVE pay gap between the men in the shop even BELOW them and their own position.

People telling all the software devs to learn a trade:
Oh, you really, really don't know how hard the boomers have actually made it to do that, at least in the US, probably elsewhere.
Almost none of them want to hire apprentices without schooling (which is expensive as fuck, and arguably unnecessary, given the entire trades system is SUPPOSED to be an alternative), and even WITH school people come up against walls like "$12/hr starting pay" and/or "need 5 years experience." Because these places are run by Boomers so wildly divorced from the cost of living they truly don't get it. They are like fully incapable of understanding.
Boomers genuinely, honest to god, do not want to train anyone. They will sooner die with a pipe wrench in their hand than train new people. They just want experience to fall into their lap like magic and make it "someone else's problem."

In my personal experience, a lot fewer trans feminine people voice train than the Internet would have you believe
There’s some reasons for that:
- Noticing one’s own voice is dysphoria-inducing for many, and noticing your voice is required
- It’s a commitment and a lot of effort, even to do it yourself
- The results are often mid at best
- Many trans people have naturally androgynous or somewhat feminine voices
- Many more just don’t see the point, don’t care, or don’t have vocal dysphoria (doesn’t make them less trans btw)
- Cost of a real speech therapist is unbelievably high
- VFS is actually a pretty scary procedure (yes I know it’s improved but it is still scary and some trans people have permanently lost their voices from it… complications being rare does not mean 0% chance, for something that may not bother people enough)
- Some people like being visibly trans, which is incredibly brave and metal as fuck

Make yourself aware that Chiropractic is actually quackery. You do not need a "chiropractor" for anything. This is because they are not actual specialists who treat musculoskeletal pain, and do not subscribe to scientific methods or mainstream medicine at all.
They have done an excellent job spreading misinformation about what they actually are and what they do, peddling themselves as legitimate medical practitioners. They are no better than a massage therapist, and cost way more.
You need a massage therapist, or an orthopedic doctor. Chiropractors are NOT orthopedic doctors. They MAY be doctors (depending on where you live), but their methods are not rooted in science, but quackery.

Anyone in Seattle area want some portable A/C units?
I got two 10,000 BTU portable units on wheels (used half of one season) and a (I believe) 13,500 BTU window unit also used one season.
They all have integrated heat and cooling.
They are all 110V.
They don't have smart home shit except the window unit, but you can just not use the wifi on it. It doesn't require an app or anything.
I have all the hoses and mounting stuff.
I have the remotes for them somewhere also.
Known working, but otherwise sold as-is.
Let me know! I would be willing to part with them for a really reasonable price.
I basically just have too many A/C units as the result of inheriting ones already that meet my needs.
For the window unit I'm looking for $150 OBO.
For the other two units, $100 OBO.

@natty @angelthorns Yeah, the problem is IRC's state machine is enormous. Clients alone have 20+ pieces of state (nick, ident/username, host, real name, mpsc queue, modeset, target change, token bucket, last ping received, pending ping, away message if any, channel membership list (needed for WHOIS), MONITOR list, capabilities list, quit flag and message (if the user is leaving, you need to broadcast it and send an ERROR to the client before disconnecting them)... things like nick, ident/username, host, mpsc queue, modeset, capabilities, etc. all affect how a message is set, what kind of message is sent (with or without tags, etc.), what is sent with it (nick/user/host is included in most messages from a user), etc.
Much of this state doesn't change often, but other state is pretty changeable (like nickname or away message or channel membership), sometimes by the user, sometimes by other users (think /SANICK etc.) so it is extremely painful to deal with it.

@natty @angelthorns Most IRC commands touch on some kind of state in some form. The main exceptions being PRIVMSG/NOTICE, those are basically read-only operations minus token bucket limiting/target change update, but that is very brief.
You can mitigate it with things like caching things like if a user can send a message and only invalidating the cache if the mode set or ban/quiet/except list is updated... but then you're doing cache management, and you still gotta manage locks because those lists can be updated by another coroutine.
IRC is... well, a very antiquated design. This is just how the protocol works.

Nickname changes, membership changes, rate limiting, target change throttling, user and channel modes, checking ban/quiet lists then exceptions... channels are effectively global, so they are everywhere.

@angelthorns I guess an alternative could be to use Rust's stock mpsc queues which don't require .await but that is just as heavy weight and might block if the queue is full.
Also, a major footgun I found. Never use tokio's RwLock if you can avoid it. Sure, it's Send. But then you can cause a deadlock without even realising it, if you keep the lock held in a coroutine, then .await... if something else tries to use that same lock. BOOM. Deadlock.

@angelthorns Basically the pattern I came up with is:
1) Create Vec that will store client mpsc channels (which are thankfully Clone) and messages you want to send them
2) Lock state structure (I used an RwLock because for the most common case, PRIVMSG and NOTICE, you don't need to mutate much client state)
3) Perform CRUD-style updates to the users
4) Enqueue messages to send to the users as well as their queues
5) Drop the lock
6) Process all the messages in the Vec you just created
It is... actually much more messy and heavy than the same C/C++ code, and not a super scalable design. But the architecture of a chat system makes it virtually unavoidable unless you store thousands of per-user locks... which is not great overhead either and requires locking/unlocking potentially thousands of locks per operation too.
I mean, hey, if anyone else has better ideas I'm open to it, but this seems to be the way everyone suggests doing it.

@angelthorns I tried to write an IRC daemon in Rust. There is so much global state, that it is a painful task to actually do so. You have to basically lock a bunch of effectively global state, gather all the data, perform modifications to the data, queue everything you want to send, release the lock, then send the messages. You have to do it this way because you can't hold the lock across an await boundary (which, to be fair... is the right thing to enforce, because that's asking for a deadlock).
