Grandma dies at the end of the chapter. The funeral service is in a Christian church -- makes sense, her surviving family appears to all be Christians, and I don't think they actually found out about her secret repressed Jewish childhood. She didn't even *remember* that version of herself until right before her death.
When D and Leon are leaving the service, D looks up at the cross on top of the building, and they have this exchange in TP:
D: I was just wondering which soul is at peace now, the real or the imagined.
Leon: Huh? Is this some kind of Zen thing?
Which goes like this in SS:
D: I simply wondered which heaven the two of them have gone to.
Leon: Huh? The two of them? What do you mean, "two"? And what, are there supposed to be a bunch of heavens?
I like the first one. It's about the duality of Grandma's identity. The second version sounds like it's just about the duo of Grandma and Pappy -- and it's purely sweet and fluffy, which is nice and all, but I think the wrap-up for this story called for a touch of sadness.
