#WordWeavers 17/2/26: Would you still write if you had to use a typewriter or pen and paper?

Pen and paper *is* how I write a lot of word count. I did a lot of writing on the bus in notebooks before my brain broke, and then a lot of writing with pen and paper when I couldn't bear to look at a screen.

RSI means that I'd have trouble with a mechanical typewriter these days.

Finished adding my 2020-2025 pen and ink purchases from Cult Pens to my spreadsheet.

Um. That's a lot of ink, and it's just the ones from Cult Pens (who, to be fair, were my only enablers until a year or so back).

I can stop any time I want.

#WritersCoffeeClub 15 Feb 2026: How big are your settings?

Depends on what I'm writing. The "should be in submission now stop procrastinating" contemporary mmf romance is in a small Yorkshire village with a few scenes elsewhere. The "slapstick sex in spaaace!" romance is an interstellar setting implied to have a large number of planets with a mix of humans and not-humans plus their associate AIs, where BBC Radio 4 is still broadcasting Morning Service. 😆

"Didn't like that database either. Maybe just do my own to track the paper logbook..."

I used to use Lotus Approach, but that was another country, and besides the software is dead. I have just opened MS Access. I meeped quietly, and closed it again. Think I'll just use Excel. And at some point when I track the mythical Circular Tuit to its lair I may even install whatever LibreOffice has mutated into by then. Hopefully it will not be infested with IP-thieving planet-killers.

Oh lord. I'm going to have to look up how to mute notifications for likes/boosts on a specific post. Because a specific post is drowning out everything else, and I'm over here trying to have a conversation with friends about our mutual hobbies.

Right, the subscription for that pen and ink cataloguing app is getting cancelled. It does not do one of the things I wanted it for, which is to track what's been inked. It *should* do that, and clearly does for most users, but not on my iPad model/build.

This is coming up to six months since I reported it to the developer, and he did say he would look into it, but I've heard nothing back since then. I've had at least one major iOS upgrade, and there are release notes for the latest version of iOS, but even after deleting and reinstalling this afternoon it's not having any of it.

I have a paper log of pens and inks I've already used, but I now have enough Things that I'd like a searchable database that includes things not yet used/opened. A long time ago I would have simply fired up Lotus Approach, but that was a long time ago and I didn't bother to crowbar SmartSuite onto the Windows 11 machine.

I don't have the spoons to deal with installing LibreOffice and learning to use it, so the Spawn of Redmond it is.

ETA: before the Linux reply guys arrive, anyone telling me I should install Linux gets blocked. Spoons, kiddies, spoons. Don't make me dig out the rant about learning curves and privilege.

Me: "The US interned people of Japanese descent during the second world war, and so at a far higher rate than they did people of German and Italian descent."

Well Actually: "The UK interned people of German and Italian descent".

Me: where's the block button?

Yes, I know the UK interned people. Funnily enough, I'm from the UK and have watched the tv documentaries about the Germans who didn't go home afterwards. That's quite a derailment from my pointing out a toot from a prominent Japanese American who was actually interned as a child and is saying that he sees it happening all over again.

RE: @georgetakei@universeodon.com

For anyone not aware, George Takei is one of the Japanese-Americans who were forcibly relocated and interned in camps by the US during the second world war. They lost much of their property, including businesses, that they were forced to abandon or sell at a loss, or which were outright stolen.

The people of German and Italian descent weren't incarcerated to anything like the same extent.

He's not being metaphorical about knowing firsthand.

@cstross@wandering.shop @davidgerard@circumstances.run more seriously, the new Blue ray sets have optional new SFX with newly filmed physical model work and a little CGI which manage the trick of looking almost exactly like what they would have looked like in 1978 but with a decent budget. A reboot might improve the wobbly sets, but I don't actually want more than we already have with the "lovingly restore and gently update SFX" edition of the original series, because I don't think they'll catch lightning in a bottle twice when it comes to scripts and cast.

@cstross@wandering.shop Oh, and "check first" goes double if you're a children's author. I know that someone else with a similarish name to me decided to call their book "Dolphin Dreams" well after mine was published, because it somehow got attached as an "other editions" to the Amazon listing for mine and vice versa. Hers was a children's book. Mine... is not. I looked for Amazon's author customer service contact as soon as I'd recovered from the shock, and pointed out that it might be a good idea to fix that immediately if not sooner.

@cstross@wandering.shop And if you're an obscure writer, hope that much better known writers do the same, especially during a unrelated storm between two other authors about "I'm successful so they stole my title". Anyone not looking at the copyright dates would have assumed that I was trying to hang on coat tails. It's happened to me at least twice twice, with different authors. (I would be extremely surprised if it was anything other than pure coincidence. It's not exactly unlikely for multiple people to think a word sounds like a nice fit for their book.)
