Yes recent used is definitely the sweet spot for EVs now. When I ordered mine 3 years ago, gas price was high and the Inflation Reduction Act EV credit had just passed, so there was an EV supply shortage. Recent used were selling for almost as much as new. With tax credit differential, it made sense to buy new. Which meant ordering from the factory cuz EVs at the dealers were all spoken for (at least anywhere w/in 500 miles of me). So I ordered new, never having test driven one.
Very different market now, but the pendulum may be swinging back toward EVs...as it most definitely should (along w/ investments in more livable communities that are less reliant on cars; electrified intercity rail, etc.).

I’m sympathetic to lack of affordability on many fronts: housing, cars, groceries, etc.
But I’m not sympathetic about gas prices at the pump (though certainly, increasing diesel drives up costs of goods that are trucked to market).
Consumers should have learned from past prices & insulated themselves against price spikes by getting the most fuel-efficient vehicle (&/or maximizing bike/walk/transit mobility instead of car ownership).

In addition to short-sightedness, the CEOs suffered from another common illness among CEOs: Greed.
Marketing & manufacturing big gas trucks & SUVs cuz that’s where the big profits are (soon to be “were”), rather than move their industry forward.

@GreenFire@mstdn.social Only downside of the ‘23 and earlier Bolts is “fast charging” is slow. Long road trips are definitely not in its wheelhouse. But the ‘27 Bolts are much faster. 10 to 80% in 26 min at a 150kW fast charger. That’s a pit stop break.

I bought mine in the spring of ‘23. A combination of high gas prices & newly passed tax credits put a pinch on the supply of EVs, newer used ones were selling for almost as much as new. And all new EVs at dealerships were spoken for. So I ordered a new one from the factory & waited 3 months.
I love the car, especially the value proposition compared to other EVs.
The deals on recent model year Bolts right now are crazy.

Also biked Minnesota’s newest bike path, completed late last fall, between Rock Creek (pronounced “crick”) and Pine City. It’s only 3 miles long, but one more segment from the Twin Cities to Duluth is done.
I was a good boy and picked up a number of beer bottles that had been tossed from the adjacent highway 61. Including two bottles that were broken on the paved trail.
I hate that, and try to remove them when I can.

Gray squirrels & wild turkeys are my most familiar run-ins.
Pics from May 2023 bicycle tour along the Mississippi on which I carried along a birding camera & lens. The birdwatching during spring migration & nesting was fabulous. The bison were a surprise. Dakota County had restored some prairie & returned some bison to a portion of it, next to bike trail.

I have a general question for you about data centers. I’ve read that in Finland, they’re capturing the “waste” heat and using it to heat buildings and such.
With so many gigawatts of heat being generated by these silly data centers, why isn’t heat capture & reuse a requirement?
Why aren’t all data centers sited in areas where “waste” heat can (must) be used as a resource?
Any policy movement on this?

I was intrigued by Rivian; thought I might look seriously at their smaller, more affordable SUV for those situations when i want more ruggedness than my Bolt delivers (for snow; logging roads in the Superior National Forest—use cases for 1 percent of my miles).
But the more they embrace garbage tech, the more I’m turned off.

But with recent cheap gas, there are killer deals out there now on lightly used EVs. It’s a great time to make the switch & stop funding the #OilyBoys.
Especially if one can charge at home. My EV fuel costs <2 cents per mile when I home charge off-peak (which is 95 percent of the time).

Smart.
I did convert a medium-sized steel hardtail MTB to a touring bike, which basically meant smooth tires and a rear rack to carry panniers. For daughter to ride on our first bike tour.
First modestly steep, loaded descent, that bike got the speed shimmies (death wobbles). Scary, but daughter did a good job bringing it under control.
Gonna heed geometry & weight distribution next time.

On a really nice transit bus from the ‘burbs to downtown Minneapolis. There was one other person on when I boarded, but he got off a stop later. So I rode a 57-passenger coach bus alone for 20 miles.
Even my bride bristles every time I suggest I or our daughters take a bus to solve a commuting dilemma.
Why don’t more people use transit? It’s way better than driving urban freeways.

My wealth (or virtue) signaling is keeping old things in use way longer than is reasonable. Patch old jeans & shirts or wear them with a few unpatched holes; incrementally replace every part on the bicycle as the parts wear out, but keep the frame (& when frame breaks, find a used one to transfer all the parts to); learn proper hip-checking technique to jostle a finicky 1992 Maytag washer into service.
When I “need” to buy new, buy stuff that’s built to last.

No goalie position in hoops? There works be, right quick, if goaltending were allowed. And it would be really hard to score on the unless they legalized a lot of violence…even more than they have now

Rules is rules, and I respect the rights of the basketball rules gods to disallow goal-tending in their sport. It’s a very different sport than the others.
Imagine how different hockey would be if the rules didn’t encourage defenders to maim their opponents, or if goaltending wasn’t a thing.

But a tanker of oil should be accompanied by a massive, rapid up-scaling of wind, solar, storage, grid updates, energy efficiency is needed to power Cuba and remove oil dependence as a geopolitical weapon.
