THE SUMMONING (2022)
Acrylic - 8 ½” x 7 ¼”
The paint for this came from a leftover palette. Most of the earth tones had dried up but the blues, turquoises, and greens looked okay. 1/2

DEATHWING: THE DESTROYER
Preliminary concept for World of Warcraft
Acrylic - 8” x 11”
Michael Whelan has painted a variety of dragons in his career, but none match the fury and destructive power of Deathwing. Commissioned by Blizzard Entertainment for the massively popular online RPG.
This small original painting is now available in our shop while it lasts:

THE REACH (1999)
Acrylic on Canvas - 48” x 30”
Almost a Lumen painting, in which figures are trying to work their way out of enclosed spaces and get into the light. 1/3

JOHN CARTER OF MARS (1979)
Acrylic - 22” x 28”
I’ve had a special fondness for The Martian Tales by Edgar Rice Burroughs even since I first read them in my early teens. This was the last of 11 covers, so it seemed fitting to have John Carter and Dejah Thoris ride off into the sunset. 1/3

BEE TAXI (2016)
Acrylic on Gessobord - 12" x 16"
The last painting I used this palette for, HARBINGER, had a lot of yellows in it. When I finished, I covered the palette with a yellow ochre gesso so I could use it again. 1/3

CATSPAW (1988)
Acrylic on Resin Board - 30” x 20”
Sometimes a cover concept blazes into my internal vision while reading the book, and I know no other will do. Even after finding the best approach, I'll spend days trying to outdo it to make sure my first instinct was correct. 1/4

SOMETHING IN MY EYE (1996)
Oil on Panel - 22” x 22”
I created this as the cover for a poster book of my favorite horror paintings. For years I promised to follow with a similarly cringe-worthy riff on dental horror but have yet to make good on that threat. 1/2

While excavating on the Moon, an astronaut bites the dust (I couldn’t resist) and another fights vainly against a malevolent alien energy. 1/3

TIME’S PASSING (2007)
Oil on Panel - 26” x 16”
As a native Californian, I really enjoy the change in seasons that I experience living in New England. There is even beauty to be found in the shadows of the leafless trees against the pale gray winter sky. 1/2

STONE OF FAREWELL (1989)
Acrylic on Canvas - 21” X 46”
The main problem in doing what is called a wraparound cover—art that wraps around from the front to the back of the book—is in trying to avoid pieces that look like two different paintings stuck together. 1/4
