@scalzi @jsnell Stood in line 3 hours 3x to see “Star Wars” in 1977, when the spaceship flew over our heads at the beginning we knew it was going to be very special. And it always was 🙂

@Migueldeicaza Never used Chrome except to interact with Google Drive until a house utility website started acting funny on Safari & only Chrome would fix it. Luckily the website was fixed a month later & now works on Safari again 🙂

@jamesthomson Great remembrance, thanks. I started with iPod in 2005, Mac Pro in 2009, then iPhone in 2015 & never looked back. Very happy with my life choices that included Apple, & now I can buy iPhones, Macs, & iPads for my grandchildren 🙂

@TidBITS I did the same, starting with a 2009 Mac Pro & then moving to the 27” iMac several years later. And I too use an MBP, in my case a 16” M3 Max, with a Studio Display. My only quibble is buy a metal stand to raise the Studio Display, don’t use books (I bought the height-adjustable stand for $400) 🙂

@kenshirriff Thanks, great article & a part of computer history unknown to a non-defense software engineer. Started my career in military communications, was one of the first users of ARPANET in 1976, but had no idea what flight computers were in use at the time. Now I do 🙂

@cvvhrn Yes to Star Wars in 1977. When that spaceship flew over our heads at the beginning we knew we were seeing something very different 🙂

@BenRiceM It used to be in the era of blood-letting, doubt it’s a “thing” now 🙂

@tvaziri There’s actually a great true story that took place in Africa during WW1 when the British dragged gunboats overland to take control of Lake Tanganyika. Humphrey Bogart & Katharine Hepburn did it the easy way in “The African Queen” but no-one’s made a movie of the real story 🙁

@david @ryanpoolos @siracusa I can’t pay my house gas bill on my M3 Max MBP without switching to Chrome. Need a Safari extension to pretend it’s Chrome (once had one for IE long ago). Oh well, let’s hope this works itself out eventually, though I’m not sure how 🙁

@coreyspowell @stroughtonsmith Wow, beautiful. Have seen a “shield eruption” from Kilauea in 2003 where you can walk around the lava flowing out of the ground. Niece lived on Big Island for several years, eruptions & lava flows finally drove her out 🙁

@flargh Beaten up for not supporting Reagan? Ron wouldn’t have approved of such behavior. Lived in Switzerland during much of Reagan administration, when Berlin Wall fell the Europeans were thanking him profusely for telling Gorbachev to “tear down this wall”. Didn’t know anything about the younger generation then, weren’t sure they knew who Reagan was.

@glennf Never used either, but my kids are avid Instagram users. They say I should put some of my thousands of digitized film photos on Instagram, but I can’t see sharing our private lives. And who wants to see the world in the 1980’s anyway?
